Development of UAS-based in situ atmospheric CO2 and CH4 scanning methods for applications to ecosystems
International audienceAt the ecosystem scale, where greenhouse gases emissions are highly variable in space and time, classical flux monitoring methods have difficulties to provide information on the fine spatial heterogeneities: chamber measurements or gradients in the soil provide information at the very small scale (< m2), while flux towers provide information averaged over the footprint area which depend from the wind conditions and tower elevation. We developed a high frequency in situ greenhouse gases analyser embarked on a Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS), which allows a fine mapping of the heterogeneities (up to 1 m resolution) of the atmospheric composition on large areas (ha to km² scale depending on UAS autonomy). This instrument, named AURORA, is an open-path laser absorption spectrometer, recording in situ CO2 and CH4 concentrations, accompanied with an on-board sonic anemometer to monitor 2D wind variables. Our first applications of this device were directed towards the monitoring of emissions from the oil and gas sector, together with a dedicated protocol associated with a mass balance quantification method that proved suitable to detect and quantify point source emissions with fluxes down to 0.01 g/s (Bonne et al., AMT, 2024). An on-going effort is being led to widen the spectrum of potential applications of this system to other types of anthropogenic or natural sources. In the agricultural sector, monitoring campaigns have been conducted and demonstrated the reliability of the instrument and mass balance method to monitor emissions from sources such as biogas plants or grazing dairy cows. Such sources are easily monitored with this classical mass balance method as they constitute a point source (or a group of point sources) localized in a restricted area. Alternative monitoring strategies are currently under development for applications to diffuse sources such as peatlands or landfills. Several monitoring campaigns were conducted on mid-latitude peatland ecosystems in France (Frasne and La Guette). Horizontal mappings of the CO2 and CH4 concentrations were performed at different elevations and different times of the day under changing meteorological conditions. They demonstrated the sufficient sensitivity of the analyser to monitor atmospheric CO2 and CH4 concentrations on such sites and revealed strong temporal and spatial variabilities of these species. First attempts were also performed on to estimate surface fluxes from vertical gradients of wind and concentrations, bringing promising results on the turbulence monitoring. This presentation will be an opportunity to present these new applications of our system for horizontal concentrations mapping and flux monitoring, which open a new window on ecosystems observations, while bringing many challenging and motivating research topics for the future
3D Monte Carlo Radiative Transfer for Parameter Retrieval in Planetary Atmospheres
International audienceRetrieving planetary atmospheric parameters from observational data is particularly challenging under large observation angles, in thick and highly scattering media (such as Titan and Venus), and in the presence of horizontal heterogeneities, like clouds and hazes. Traditional radiative transfer models, often based on plane-parallel or pseudo-spherical approximations, typically assume horizontally homogeneous layers, which limits their applicability in such scenarios. To overcome these limitations, we have developed a novel 3D radiative transfer solver, htrdr-planets, based on the Monte Carlo method that solves models considering spherical and heterogeneous atmospheres[1]. This solver leverages recent advances from the computer graphics and statistical physics communities to ensure computational efficiency.htrdr-planets supports arbitrary ground geometry, represented as triangular meshes with user-defined surface materials, and atmospheric properties defined on unstructured tetrahedral meshes. Gas absorption is modeled using the k-distribution method, and multiple aerosol and cloud populations with their own radiative properties can be described on separate spatial grids.Critically, we address the need for gradients (i.e., sensitivities) in parameter retrieval. Since conventional finite-difference methods are inefficient or infeasible with Monte Carlo, we differentiate the Monte Carlo estimator itself [2]. By reusing the same radiative paths, we construct a Monte Carlo estimator that computes both the radiance and its gradient with respect to atmospheric and surface parameters at negligible additional time cost.We apply this method to Titan and Venus, producing spatially resolved maps of sensitivity with respect to scattering, absorption, and surface-reflection properties. This framework enables retrievals in geometrically complex cases that defy traditional models, including Titan’s polar cloud structure and haze distribution, using Cassini and JWST datasets.
