No full text
International audienceThe Spanish Tragedy (c. 1587–1592) by Thomas Kyd might appear as a typical play of hyper-representation: numerous murders and acts of torture are committed on stage, and the avenger Hieronimo does not hesitate to give free rein to his melancholic temperament, sometimes in very violent ways. This Senecan-inspired play is generally considered the model of the English revenge tragedy, as some of its core elements were imitated, then becoming conventions. Nevertheless, early modern English revenge tragedies also have a strong ironic content, as seen in Shakespeare’s Hamlet (c. 1599–1601), Marston’s Antonio’s Revenge (1602), or Middleton’s The Revenger’s Tragedy (1606). This irony in relation to the Senecan model is already present in The Spanish Tragedy, to the point of undermining the language and expression of revenge. Far from endorsing private revenge, the play instead reveals its limitations, questioning the chivalric models of honour while offering a complex dramaturgy and linguistic devices that are the symptoms of a crisis of representation.

International audience“Exile”, “outcast”, “refugee” ? How did the vocabulary of forced migration develop in modern Europe? This paper tackles the first half of the 19th century, when exile, understood as a forced stay abroad, became a crucial element of the repressive repertoire. Europe was a real semantic laboratory where new terminologies and categories were developed to distinguish foreigners from each other: among the latter, “refugees” were at the center of public attention. While they benefited from financial support and a special administrative status in the early 19th-century France, they were also subject to control. Although the refugees were able to form strong groups of several tens of thousands in the 1820s and 1830s, they nevertheless experienced a form of loneliness linked to being uprooted from their homeland, the experience of family separation and language difficulties. The loneliness of the political “exile” in the crowd of “refugees” stood out from the cultural representations produced in the hosting societies.« Exilé », « proscrit », « réfugié » ?

Use of Remote Sensing Data to Study the Aral Sea Basin in Central Asia-Geoscience and Geological Hazards

No full text
International audienceThe Aral Sea Basin (ASB), situated in Central Asia, serves as a prime example of a man-made environmental disaster. The practice of irrigation can be traced back to ancient times. However, the substantial water withdrawals that have occurred since the second half of the 20th century appear to have led to the irreversible drying up of the Aral Sea and the disruption of the flow of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers. This study conducts a comprehensive review of satellite data from the past sixty years, drawing upon a selection of peer-reviewed papers available on Scopus. The selection of papers is conducted in accordance with a methodology that is predicated on the combination of keywords. The study focuses on geoscientific aspects, including the atmosphere, water resources, geology, and geological hazards. The primary sensors employed in this study were Terra-MODIS, NOAA-AVHRR, and the Landsat series. It is evident that certain data types, including radar data, US or Soviet archives, and veryhigh-resolution data such as OrbView-3, have seen minimal utilisation. Despite the restricted application of remote sensing data in publications addressing the ASB, remote sensing data offer a substantial repository for monitoring the desiccation of the Aral Sea, once the fourth largest continental body of water, and for the estimation of its water surface and volume. Nevertheless, the utilisation of remote sensing in publications concerning the Aral region remains limited, with less than 10% of publications employing this method. Sentinel-2 data has been utilised to illustrate the construction of the Qosh Tepa Canal in Afghanistan, a project which has been the subject of significant controversy, with a particular focus on the issue of water leakage. This predicament is indicative of the broader challenges confronting the region with regard to water management in the context of climate change. A comparison of the Aral Sea's case history is drawn with analogous examples worldwide, including Lake Urmia, the Great Salt Lake, and, arguably more problematically, the Caspian Sea.</div

Back to the Source: Connecting the Seismological Observations of Le Teil Earthquake (M w 4.9, 2019/11/11, France) to the Local Geology

International audienceAbstract The spatial distribution of seismicity in active fault zones depends primarily on the geometry of the fault networks. However, recent advances suggest that seismic activity may also be controlled by the rheology of the geological units surrounding fault zones. In the present work, we use seismological and geological analyses to investigate the influence of the local geology on the rupture nucleation and propagation of the 2019 Le Teil earthquake (France; M L = 5.4; M w = 4.9) and on the distribution of its aftershocks. The kinematic rupture model of the mainshock, obtained by joint inversion of seismological and INSAR data, shows that the rupture nucleated at 1 km depth and propagated mainly up‐dip and bilaterally. Template matching detection identifies 115 aftershocks (−1.6 ≤ M L ≤ 2.5) in the two months following the mainshock. Double difference location shows that the aftershocks delineate a 4 km‐long NE‐SW plane with a 60° dip to the SE, consistent with the extent and the geometry of the La Rouvière fault activated during the mainshock. By placing the seismicity in the local geological context, we conclude that the seismic activity was largely controlled by the rheological properties of the contrasting lithology. The mainshock nucleated in marly‐limestone, but the coseismic slip was maximum above 0.6 km depth in a massive limestone more prompt to store elastic strain. The aftershocks occurred mainly in marls and marly limestone. They are interpreted as ruptures in competent beds of limestones of varying thickness, interbedded with marls

Jules Verne

Effects of whole-body vibration training on muscle performance in healthy women: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

No full text
International audienceObjective This study aimed to perform a comprehensive meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials examining the effectiveness of whole-body vibration training (WBVT) on muscle performance in healthy women. Methods A systematic search of studies available up to 30 May 2024 was conducted using seven databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL, PEDro, and the Cochrane Library. Studies with a randomized and controlled protocol in which the effect of WBVT on muscle performance variables was compared to that of a) a non-exercise intervention or b) exercise intervention in healthy women were assessed for eligibility. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the PEDro scale. Meta-analyses were performed using random effects models, and the results were expressed as standardized mean differences (SMDs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Results A total of 21 randomized controlled trials, encompassing 748 healthy women, was included in the meta-analysis. WBVT demonstrated significantly greater effects on muscle strength and power when compared with the non-exercise control groups with regard to knee extension (SMD = 0.534, 95% CI: 0.303 to 0.766, p < 0.001), leg press (SMD = 0.794, 95% CI = 0.424 to 1.163, p < 0.001), ankle plantar flexion (SMD = 0.462, 95% CI: 0.019 to 0.904, p = 0.041), and the countermovement jump performance (SMD = 0.470, 95% CI: 0.211 to 0.729, p < 0.001). However, WBVT significantly improved only the countermovement jump performance (SMD = 0.338, 95% CI: 0.037 to 0.640, p = 0.028) when compared with the exercise control groups. Subgroup analyses revealed that longer periods (≥ 12 weeks) of WBVT resulted in greater benefits for both muscle strength and power compared to the non-exercise control group. Additionally, higher frequencies (> 30 Hz, SMD = 0.736, p < 0.001; ≤ 30 Hz, SMD = 0.284, p = 0.109) provided greater benefits for improving muscle strength. Last, post-menopausal women (post-menopausal, SMD = 0.561, p = 0.001; pre-menopausal, SMD = 0.354, p = 0.076) obtained greater benefits in muscle power with WBVT than pre-menopausal women. Conclusions WBVT is efficacious in improving lower-body muscle strength and power in healthy women. However, the potential benefits of WBVT compared to other exercise interventions were only associated with an enhancement in countermovement jump performance. Longer periods (≥ 12 weeks) of WBVT resulted in greater benefits for both muscle strength and power compared to the non-exercise control group. Additionally, higher vibration frequencies (> 30 Hz) provided greater improvements in muscle strength, while post-menopausal women reaped greater benefits in muscle power than pre-menopausal women
