    Moving with affects in Finnish academia : Resistance practices of social science and humanities researchers and a possibility of change

    This article discusses the resistance practices of the social sciences and humanities researchers who are doing small-scale qualitative research in Finnish universities. The research material was generated in three online ‘cafés’ where 22 researchers from different academic career stages gathered to share and discuss their experiences and emotions related to both their everyday work and to the effects of current research strategies on their work. The social sciences and humanities researchers felt discomfort with current neoliberal science politics, but they must, to some extent, play by its rules. However, they have found different ways to resist them, too, and this study scrutinises what kinds of resistance practices were generated in the café encounters and, further, how affects became part of these practices. Through my analysis, anxiety, anger, pride and hope came into being as the most meaningful affects that circulated through the cafés, and which fostered the resistance practices. Furthermore, with these affects, academics move towards individual or collective, but sometimes ambiguously towards both of these ways of resisting. The individual way supports the neoliberal idea of competing individuals, whereas a more collective way can open a possibility for more substantial and rapid change.</p

    Orbital variability of the optical linear polarization of the γ -ray binary LS i +61° 303 and new constraints on the orbital parameters

    We studied the variability of the linear polarization and brightness of the γ-ray binary LS I +61 303. High-precision BVR photopolarimetric observations were carried out with the Dipol-2 polarimeter on the 2.2 m remotely controlled UH88 telescope at Mauna Kea Observatory and the 60 cm Tohoku telescope at Haleakala Observatory (Hawaii) over 140 nights in 2016--2019. We determined the position angle of the intrinsic polarization θ≃11∘, which can either be associated with the projection of the Be star's decretion disk axis on the plane of sky, or can differ from it by 90∘. Using the Lomb-Scargle method, we performed timing analyses and period searches of our polarimetric and photometric data. We found statistically significant periodic variability of the normalized Stokes parameters q and u in all passbands. The most significant period of variability, PPol=13.244±0.012 d, is equal to one half of the orbital period Porb=26.496 d. Using a model of Thomson scattering by a cloud that orbits the Be star, we obtained constraints on the orbital parameters, including a small eccentricity e</p

    Adolescent alcohol and cannabis use as risk factors for head trauma in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort study 1986

    BackgroundThe aim of this study was to assess the associations between cannabis use and frequency of alcohol intoxication in adolescence with the risk of traumatic brain injury and craniofacial fractures in early adulthood. Hypothesis was that using alcohol and cannabis in adolescence could increase the risk for head traumas.MethodsData from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 (n = 9432 individuals) were used to investigate the prospective association between the self-reported frequency of alcohol intoxication (n = 6472) and cannabis use (n = 6586) in mid-adolescence and register-based, head trauma diagnoses by ages 32–33 years. To test the robustness of these associations, the statistical models were adjusted for a range of other confounders such as illicit drug use, previous head trauma and self-reported mental health problems.ResultsIn multivariate analyses, cannabis use was statistically significantly associated with a greater risk of traumatic brain injury among females [hazard ratio (HR) 1.9, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.1–3.2, P = 0.024). Frequent alcohol intoxication was a statistically significant independent risk factor for both traumatic brain injury (HR 2.6, 95% CI 1.7–3.9, P P ConclusionsCannabis use in adolescence appears to associate independently with elevated risk for traumatic brain injury among females, and frequent alcohol intoxication in adolescence seems to associate with elevated risk of both traumatic brain injury and craniofacial fractures among males.</p

    Nonlinear Optical Properties of Discotic Hexylthiotruxene Derivatives

    The search for efficient and transparent nonlinear optical (NLO) media has led to the investigation and development of alternative organic optical materials. In this context, a series of new hexylthiotruxene derivatives have been synthesized, and their linear and NLO properties are explored. These truxene derivatives show large NLO absorption due to their C3 symmetry, presence of large hyperpolarizability, and extended π-conjugation. Herein, we show that two-photon absorption and three-photon absorption processes are the main cause of nonlinear absorption in these materials under 5 ns and 100 fs excitations at 532 and 800 nm excitations, respectively. The nonlinear absorption coefficients have high values of 2 to 7.9 × 10–10 m/W in the nanosecond domain and 2.2 to 7.4 × 10–21 m3/W2 in the femtosecond domain. The corresponding nonlinear absorption cross-section (δ) values and the nonlinear susceptibilities were also calculated from the numerically obtained nonlinear absorption coefficient values. Tailored truxene derivative showed an excellent optical limiting threshold of 4.5 J/cm2 and is comparable to or better than most recently reported and benchmark optical limiting materials. Longer alkyl members of the series showed the largest nonlinear absorption in both excitation domains and could be a potential optical limiter. </p

    Deleuze put forth a description of fluid control in computerized society in his text ‘Postscript on Control Societies’. With the help of the philosophy of Gilbert Simondon, we can broaden and complexify this view and understand digital systems through the concept of modulation. These modulatory systems intervene in human individuation by controlling individuals as ‘dividuals’. In contemporary digital technologies, like blockchain platforms, the modulatory dividual control can be fierce and even total. Simondon’s concepts of pre-individual, individuation, and transindividuation present us with an ontology for this contemporary mode of control and enable us to better understand the complex relations between the being of humans and technical networks.</p

    Elements of Historical Personal Identity Construction of Finnish-Speaking Students

    In this paper, the constructions of historical personal identity of Finnish-speaking students are analysed. The students participated in a larger study of historical narratives and identities, carried out in 2020 in two schools in Finland and in one European School outside Finland. In the mixed-method study, sixty-one students were interviewed and given writing and drawing assignments on historical identity. In this paper, the students’ visual representations of their personal historical identity and its relationship with wider official history are analysed. The aim is to increase understanding of how 14–16-year-old students visualise and articulate their historical personal identity constructions and the historical elements they use in negotiating this identity. The findings suggest that the students integrate personal and historical social narratives in diverse ways but that the majority of them find it challenging to connect their personal family history with the wider official history. Only twelve students made the connection. In addition to presenting the results for the whole group of students, the visual representations of two selected students are discussed in more detail so as to highlight the difference in the approaches to historical personal identity construction among the students.</p

However, with regard to remote sensing, a number of challenges caused by difficulties in data acquisition and annotation have not been fully solved yet.
