Associations between commute mode use and self-rated health and work ability among Finnish public sector employees
Aim: To determine the extent to which level of active commute mode use is associated with self-rated health and work ability. Methods: The data were sourced from the Finnish Public Sector Study survey in 2020 (n = 38,223). The associations between active commuting - assessed with the frequency of using active commute modes - and self-rated health and work ability were examined with negative binomial regression analyses. Passive commuting and low-to-moderate levels of active commuting were compared with active commuting, and the models were adjusted for sociodemographic factors, working time mode, and lifestyle risk factors. We also assessed separate associations between walking and cycling as a mode of commuting by additionally considering the commuting distance and the outcomes. Results: After adjustment, when using active commuters as a reference, passive commuters had a 1.23-fold (95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.19 to 1.29) risk of suboptimal self-rated health and a 1.18-fold (95% CI 1.13 to 1.22) risk of suboptimal work ability. More frequent and/or longer distance by foot and especially by bicycle, was positively associated with health and work ability. Never commuting by bicycle was associated with a 1.65-fold (95% CI 1.55 to 1.74) risk of suboptimal health and a 1.27-fold (95% CI 1.21 to 1.34) risk of suboptimal work ability when using high-dose bicycle commuting as a reference. Conclusions: Passive commuting was associated with suboptimal self-rated health and suboptimal work ability. Our results suggest that using active commute modes, particularly cycling, may be beneficial for employee health and work ability
Localization in Unstructured Environments: Towards Autonomous Robots in Forests with Delaunay Triangulation
Autonomous harvesting and transportation is a long-term goal of the forest industry. One of the main challenges is the accurate localization of both vehicles and trees in a forest. Forests are unstructured environments where it is difficult to find a group of significant landmarks for current fast feature-based place recognition algorithms. This paper proposes a novel approach where local point clouds are matched to a global tree map using the Delaunay triangularization as the representation format. Instead of point cloud based matching methods, we utilize a topology-based method. First, tree trunk positions are registered at a prior run done by a forest harvester. Second, the resulting map is Delaunay triangularized. Third, a local submap of the autonomous robot is registered, triangularized and matched using triangular similarity maximization to estimate the position of the robot. We test our method on a dataset accumulated from a forestry site at Lieksa, Finland. A total length of 200 m of harvester path was recorded by an industrial harvester with a 3D laser scanner and a geolocation unit fixed to the frame. Our experiments show a 12 cm s.t.d. in the location accuracy and with real-time data processing for speeds not exceeding 0.5 m/s. The accuracy and speed limit are realistic during forest operations.</p
Remote teaching of Ume Sámi to young learners in Sweden
This article is based on a qualitative case study of remote teaching in the endangered, indigenous language Ume Sámi. The purpose of the study is to support the revitalisation of the endangered Ume Sámi language in educational settings. Further, the aims for the study is to enhance knowledge of teaching this language. Through teacher interviews and lesson observations, the study focuses on teacher experiences in the remote teaching of young learners. The verbatim-transcribed data was analysed through a data-driven thematic analysis. The results show that remote education is necessary for teaching Ume Sámi due to the geographical distribution of the Sámi people. The challenges of teaching through remote education originate outside the digital Ume Sámi classroom. Challenges identified in this study comprise teaching time, scheduling across different schools, shortage of educational material in the Ume Sámi language and lack of commitment from the young learners’ regular school. Moreover, teachers perceive that communicating Sámi culture beyond language is challenging due to a shortage of resources. The cultural aspects are crucial, especially when pupils live outside Sápmi, the core geographical area of the Sámi people. Teachers expressed a desire for conventional Swedish schools to carry their responsibility and teach about Sápmi and the Sámi people to all pupils in Sweden.</p
Surgical and Health-related Quality of life Outcomes in Children With Congenital Scoliosis During 5-year Follow-up Comparison to Age and Sex-matched Healthy Controls
Background: Congenital spinal anomalies represent a heterogeneous group of spinal deformities, of which only progressive or severe curves warrant surgical management. Only a limited number of studies have investigated the impact of surgery on the health-related quality of life and very limited data exists comparing these outcomes to healthy controls. Methods: A single surgeon series of 67 consecutive children with congenital scoliosis (mean age at surgery 8.0 y, range: 1.0 to 18.3 y, 28 girls) undergoing hemivertebrectomy (n = 34), instrumented spinal fusion (n = 20), or vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib procedure (n = 13) with a mean follow-up of 5.8 years (range: 2 to 13 y). The comparison was made to age and sex-matched healthy controls. Outcome measures included the Scoliosis Research Society questionnaire both pre and postoperatively, radiographic outcomes, and complications. Results: The average major curve correction was significantly better in the hemivertebrectomy (60%) and instrumented spinal fusion (51%) than in the vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib group (24%), respectively (P Conclusions: Surgery for congenital scoliosis improved angular spinal deformities with a reasonable risk of complications. Health-related quality of life outcomes improved from preoperative to final follow-up, but especially pain and function domains remained at a significantly lower level than in the age and sex-matched healthy controls.</p
Computer Science – Theory and Applications. CSR 2019
This article studies the complexity of the word problem in groups of automorphisms (or reversible cellular automata) of subshifts. We show in particular that for any computably enumerable Turing degree, there exists a (two-dimensional) subshift of finite type whose automorphism group contains a subgroup whose word problem has exactly this degree. In particular, there are such subshifts of finite type where this problem is uncomputable. This remains true in a large setting of subshifts over groups.</p
The Finnish Case System. Cognitive Linguistic Perspectives
This paper focuses on dynamic local cases, with special attention to spatialdescriptions which employ not only one but two or even several landmarks. The study is based on a corpus of recorded Finnish dialect samples. Thedata shows a strong goal bias, i.e., a tendency to favor expressions of goallandmarks over sources, and especially so with descriptions with humanactors, as expected on the basis of previous studies. On the other hand, thestudy does not directly support the idea that when the language has formalmeans for differentiating between the expressions of source and goal, theseare aptly used to express more than one landmark per motion event. The datais analyzed according to the verb type, the type of the spatial relationshipexpressed by the landmark, and the construction type of the landmarkexpression. It is shown that in Finnish, verbs of motion are more often thanother dynamic verbs accompanied by two or several landmark expressions, which is an expected result. However, it is the construction type of thelandmark expression that gives the greatest motivation for the use of doublelandmarks, which can be convincingly explained by the conceptualizationstrategy of nesting.</p
Evaluation of Learning Outcomes Among Practical Nursing Students After Using Three-Dimensional Technology in Their Studies
There is a lack of evidence-based information on the use of technology in first-aid education. For this reason, this study aimed to describe the learning outcomes of three-dimensional technology among practical nursing students in first-aid courses. In this quasi-experimental study, first-year practical nursing students (n = 59) were divided into intervention group (n = 32) and control group (n = 27). For the intervention group, the first-aid course (a total of 16 hours per group) included three-dimensional images, three-dimensional environments, and three-dimensional printing. For the control group, the teaching was implemented using traditional methods. The data of knowledge (pre, post, and follow-up) and skills (post) were collected. The intervention group obtained statistically significantly higher scores in knowledge in follow-up test than the control group (P = .048). They also performed better on the entire resuscitation protocol (P = .0193) and in the following parts of resuscitation: student call for help, student opens the airway correctly, student checks the breathing correctly, and student has a correct depth in the chest compressions. As a conclusion, three-dimensional technology can enhance students' first-aid knowledge and improve cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills in practical nursing education.</p
Diet, perceived intestinal well-being and compositions of fecal microbiota and short chain fatty acids in oat-using subjects with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity
A gluten-free diet may result in high fat and low fiber intake and thus lead to unbalanced microbiota. This study characterized fecal microbiota profiles by 16S MiSeq sequencing among oat-using healthy adult subjects (n = 14) or adult subjects with celiac disease (CeD) (n = 19) or non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) (n = 10). Selected microbial metabolites, self-reported 4d food diaries and perceived gut symptoms were compared. Subjects with NCGS experienced the highest amount of gut symptoms and received more energy from fat and less from carbohydrates than healthy and CeD subjects. Oat consumption resulted in reaching the lower limit of the recommended fiber intake. Frequent consumption of gluten-free pure oats did not result in microbiota dysbiosis in subjects with CeD or NCGS. Thus, the high number of gut symptoms in NCGS subjects was not linked to the microbiota. The proportion of fecal acetate was higher in healthy when compared to NCGS subjects, which may be linked to a higher abundance of Bifidobacterium in the control group compared to NCGS and CeD subjects. Propionate, butyrate and ammonia production and β-glucuronidase activity were comparable among the study groups. The results suggest that pure oats have great potential as the basis of a gluten-free diet and warrant further studies in minor microbiota disorders. Re-examining the women’s movement in cold war South Korea and beyond: The history of the Korean National Council of Women
This dissertation illustrates women’s political and social activism in South Korea’s authoritarian era. In particular, I study the local and transnational activities of the Korean National Council of Women, a women’s organization established in 1959 as a Korean branch of the International Council of Women. By connecting micro-level organizational operation to macro-level historical events, I analyze the transformation of feminism, women’s organizing, and Korean society during a 30-year-long timeframe from the late 1950s until the turn of the 1990s. Moving between local and transnational spheres, this study examines Korean women’s activism as part of the Cold War women’s internationalism.
This study asks how the Cold War shaped feminist activities, the practices and the possibilities for organization, and what kind of framework the authoritarian, anti-communist rule in South Korea provided for women’s organizing over time. This study challenges the previous scholarship’s views on the international isolation and hindrance of the women’s movement in authoritarian era South Korea. I argue that the Korean National Council of Women found ways to negotiate to advance women’s issues and build international coalitions and connections, as the organization simultaneously cooperated with and resisted the state.
My dissertation contributes to the studies and scholarly discussions on Korean contemporary history, the state-society relationship, nation-building in authoritarian regimes, and women’s transnational activism during the Cold War. By adopting a transnational approach, this study moves beyond the national framework to detail South Korea’s authoritarian era. This study builds an analytical framework around the concepts of mass dictatorship, Cold War feminism, and post-corrective historiography, thus advancing three objectives.
First, this study diversifies the historical understanding of nation-building in South Korea’s authoritarian era, especially from a gender perspective. The theory of mass dictatorship provides a framework to understand the shared vision of the future that Koreans engaged with and how they were motivated to operate towards common goals of economic development and national security. Second, this study participates in the ongoing discussion on Cold War feminisms and excavates the relationship between feminism and the Cold War. The major themes of the Korean National Council of Women’s agenda (e.g. legal reform to equalize family life, the inclusion women in national security, the fight against communism, the scientific domesticity related to family planning, consumer protection, and home economics, and the introduction of the United Nations policies regarding women in South Korea) are examined in the context of the global Cold War. Third, in the framework of post-corrective historiography, this study examines the ways of writing history. Instead of replacing previous histories, I seek to make the almost forgotten narratives visible, thus advancing discussion on historical memory, especially related to Korean feminism and its historicity.
The dissertation is based on rich empirical material: correspondence between women’s organizations, organizational bulletins, and other publications; reports on the actions of organizations and women’s status, along with news briefs collected in archives and libraries in South Korea, Belgium, and online. By drawing on previously unused archival sources, this study offers the first account of South Korean women’s involvement in the International Council of Women – one of the leading women’s movement organizations since the late 19th century. Based on the empirical material, I reconstruct a historical narrative, highlighting the activities and agendas of the Korean National Council of Women through the authoritarian era until South Korea’s democratization in the late 1980s.
The historical analysis illustrates the long continuum in Korean women’s movements. Women’s organizations and groups establish their arguments on women’s role in society on top of the previous movements, forming a cyclical nature. The authoritarian era did not silence women’s movements; this study shows how the Korean National Council of Women combined the central motives of the ruling regime and the Cold War framework to push forward its arguments on the importance of gender equality. My findings also suggest the Korean women’s movement was not isolated from the international sphere but has been an active participant, bringing women together well before the emergence of transnational solidarity movements to support the “comfort women issue” and women’s advocacy for peace on the Korean peninsula since the 1990s.Kylmän sodan aikaisen naisasialiikkeen uudelleentarkastelu Etelä-Koreassa ja sen ulkopuolella: Korean naisjärjestöjen keskusliiton historia
Yhdistämällä järjestön toiminnan laajempiin historiallisiin tapahtumiin analysoin feminismin, naisten järjestäytymisen ja korealaisen yhteiskunnan muutoksia kolmenkymmenen vuoden ajanjaksolla 1950-luvun lopulta 1990-luvun vaihteeseen.
Kolmanneksi, tutkimus tarkastelee historiankirjoituksen tapoja.
Hyödyntämällä aiemmin käyttämättömiä arkistolähteitä tämä tutkimus tarjoaa ensimmäisen kattavan kuvauksen eteläkorealaisten naisten osallistumisesta International Council of Womenin toimintaan. Empiirisen aineiston pohjalta rakennan historiallisen kertomuksen, joka valaisee Korean naisjärjestöjen keskusliiton toimintaa ja tavoitteita läpi autoritaarisen ajan aina 1980-luvun lopulle ja Etelä-Korean demokratisoitumiseen asti.
Historiallinen analyysi osoittaa pitkän jatkumon Korean naisasialiikkeiden historiassa.
Teknologinen kehitys tuo mukanaan uusia innovaatioita, joilla pyritään tehostamaan sopimusprosesseja. Oikeudellisessa kontekstissa älysopimuksiin liittyy kuitenkin haasteita, joiden ratkaiseminen on keskeistä, mikäli älysopimusten koko potentiaali halutaan hyödyntää.
Lisäksi lainsäädäntö on vasta alkutekijöissä. Näin ollen on epätodennäköistä, että älysopimukset lähitulevaisuudessa korvaisivat perinteisen sopimuksen
