    Eutrophic Conditions And Their Impact on Fish Physiology

    U ovom radu je obrađena tema eutrofnih uvjeta i njihova utjecaja na fiziologiju riba. Iako se eutrofikacija i dalje tretira kao lokalni i regionalni problem, ona predstavlja globalni problem kao što su i klimatske promjene. Preopterećenje vodenih sustava hranjivim tvarima, inače važnih za rast organizama, dovodi do promjene ekološke ravnoteže i stvaranja eutrofnih uvjeta. Ograničenim prodorom svjetlosti kroz vodeni stupac, povećava se proizvodnja fitoplanktonske biomase i novi uvjeti pogoduju rastu makroalgi i cvjetanju mora. Alge crpe kisik iz vodenog stupca te u konačnici dolazi do pojave hipoksije i povremeno anoksije, koje imaju štetne posljedice za fiziologiju riba i drugih organizama. Bez kisika u stanicama se ne proizvodi dovoljno energije, što utječe na opće stanje organizma i može dovesti do smrti.This paper deals with the topic of the eutrophic conditions and their impact on the fish physiology. Although eutrophication continues to be treated as a local and regional problem, it is a global problem, just like climate change. Overloading aquatic systems with nutrients, otherwise important for the growth of organisms, changes the ecological balance and creates eutrophic conditions. The limited penetration of light through the water column increases the production of phytoplankton biomass and new conditions favour the growth of macroalgae and algal blooms. The algae draw oxygen from the water column and, ultimately, hypoxia and occasional anoxia occur, which have adverse effects on the physiology of fish and other organisms. Without oxygen, cells do not produce enough energy, which affects the general condition of the organism and can lead to death

    Integrirana Multitrofička Akvakultura (IMTA) se sve češće primjenjuje na uzgajalištima. Razlog primjene IMTA je sve veća svijest ljudi o očuvanju okoliša, budući da se uzgojem mogu povećati koncentracije dušika i fosfora u morskom okolišu te dovesti do pojave eutrofikacije. Navedena metoda uzgoja uključuje vrste koje prirodno obitavaju na nekom području, a koje tijekom proizvodnog ciklusa koriste različite trofičke razine. Uzgoj različitih vrsta na različitim trofičkim nivoima (diverzifikacija) čuva okoliš, smanjuje poslovni rizik, povećava profitabilnost i smanjuje daljnju depopulaciju otvaranjem novih radnih mjesta. Daljnjem razvoju IMTA će pridonijeti promjena zakona te informiranost javnosti, vlasti i uzgajivača. Navedena metoda se u Hrvatskoj nedavno počela razvijati. Postoji nekoliko farmi sa uzgojem školjkaša i riba koje bi se trebale unaprijediti. Sve veći razvoj akvakulture primorat će uzgajivače na razmišljanje o IMTA ukoliko žele dugoročno održiv uzgoj.Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) has an increasing potential in cultivation. The reason for the use of IMTA is the awareness of humans about environmental conservation, considering that aquaculture might increase nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the marine environment and consequently enhance eutrophication. This method involves the cultivation of naturally occurring species in the area, which are situated at different trophic levels during the production cycle. Production of different species at different trophic levels (diversification) preserves the environment, reduces business risk, increases profitability, and reduces the further depopulation by job creation. Further development of IMTA will be facilitated by changes to the law as well as public, authorities and growers awareness. This method has recently started to develop in Croatia. There are several farms with shellfish and fish that should be improved. The recent development of aquaculture will motivate producers to think about IMTA in order to have long-term sustainable farming

    Microplastics in marine environment

    Održivo upravljanje morskim okolišem danas je jedan od globalnih problema. Naime, zagađenje morskog okoliša u posljednjih nekoliko desetljeća sve više ukazuje na potrebu za donošenjem zakonskih regulativa, uvođenjem kontrole te prevenciju jer se danas svijet suočava sa zagađenjem svjetskih mora i oceana, a potencijalno i s negativnim učincima takvog zagađenja za život u moru, pojedinih gospodarskih grana i zdravlja ljudi. Jedan od vodećih problema odnosi se na zagađenje mora i oceana plastikom. To se ne odnosi samo na krupnu plastiku, nego i na mikroplastiku koja je trenutno jedan od najznačajnijih problema zagađenja mora i oceana te može uzrokovati vrlo negativne i trajne posljedice na morski okoliš. Zbog toga je važno ovoj problematici na nacionalnoj i međunarodnoj razini pristupiti sustavno te na taj način smanjiti negativne učinke mikroplastike na morski okoliš.Presently, sustainable management of the marine environment is one of the global problems. Namely, the pollution of the marine environment in recent decades has been increasingly pointing to the need for legislation, the introduction of control and prevention because the world is facing pollution of the world's seas and oceans and potential negative effects of such pollution on marine life, particular industries and human health. One of the leading problems concerns the pollution of the sea and the ocean by plastic. This applies not only to large plastic, but also to the microplastics as an extremely abundant pollutant of marine and ocean environment with negative and lasting effects. Therefore, it is important to address these issues nationally and globally in a systematic manner, thus reducing the negative effects of microplastics on the marine environment, as well as affecting the sustainability of the sea and oceans

    Effecct of different fish processing methods on integrity and purity of isolated DNA from Anisakis SPP

    Anisakijaza je zoonoza od sve većeg javnozdravstvenog značaja koju uzrokuju oblići iz roda Anisakis prilikom penetracije u sluznicu želudca i crijeva kod ljudi. Simptomi uključuju mučninu, srednje do jaku bol u trbuhu, povraćanje i alergijske reakcije. Oblići roda Anisakis spp. prolaze kroz razvojne stadije parazitirajući u probavnom sustavu morskih riba i sisavaca. Ličinka 3. stupnja može zaraziti čovjeka kao slučajnog domaćina prilikom konzumacije sirove ili nedovoljno termički obrađene ribe ili glavonožaca. Anisakis simplex (s.s.) i A. pegreffii su najčešći uzročnici ove bolesti kod ljudi čije ličinke nije moguće morfološki razlikovati stoga se koriste molekularne metode. U ovom su radu simulirane različite metode obrade proizvoda ribarstva: kuhanje (15 min na 60°C i 80°C), soljenje (rasol 21% NaCl), mariniranje (10% octena kiselina i 3% NaCl) i sterilizacija (autoklavom na 113°C) te praćen njihov utjecaj na cjelovitost, koncentraciju i čistoću izolirane DNA iz ličinki oblića A. pegreffii i uspješnost primjene molekularnih metoda za determinaciju vrsta ovog roda na takvoj DNA. Od svih postupaka, degradacija kvalitete izolirane DNA je uočena prilikom postupka termičke obrade uz korištenje autoklava što je utjecalo i na lošu uspješnost PCR amplifikacije molekularnih biljega u ovoj skupini. (35 stranica, 12 slika, 5 tablica, 43 literaturna navoda, jezik izvornika: hrvatski) Ključne riječi: Anisakis, određivanje vrste, soljenje, mariniranje, kuhanje, sterilizacija, DNAAnisakiasis is a zoonoses with increasing public health importance caused by the nematodes of genus Anisakis when penetrating the stomach and intestines in humans. The symptoms include nausea, moderate to severe abdominal pain, vomiting and allergic reactions. Anisakis spp. go through several developmental stages while invading the digestive system of marine fish and mammals. Human can act as accidental hosts to third stage Anisakis larvae if raw or undercooked fish or cephalopods are ingested. Anisakis simplex (s.s.) and A. pegreffi are the most common species causing anisakiasis in humans whose larvae cannot be morphologically differentiated and molecular methods are used. In this study, the effect of different fish processing methods: cooking (15 min at 60°C and 80°C), salting (brine 21% NaCl), marinating (10% acetic acid, 3% NaCl) and sterilization (using autoclave at 113°C) on the integrity, concentration and purity of extracted DNA from A. pegreffii larvae and the success rate of the application of molecular methods for species identification of this genus was investigated. The degradation of the quality of extracted DNA was observed only in the case of sterilization which also had a deleterious effect on the success of PCR amplification of molecular markers in this group

    U ovom radu analizirani su meteorološki uvjeti odgovorni za poplave od 29. listopada 2018. godine. Podaci su obrađeni pomoću statističkih metoda: srednja vrijednost, klizni srednjaci, a prikupljani su tijekom razdoblja od 1. lipnja do 31. listopada od strane Državnog hidrometerološkog zavoda. Prikazani su pomoću raznih grafova koji su pokazali satne vrijednosti analiziranih meteoroloških uvjeta (tlak zraka, temperatura zraka, oborine) kroz navedenih pet mjeseci. Analizom meteroloških uvjeta dobiveni su odgovori na pitanja što je 29. listopada 2018. godine prouzrokovalo poplave duž Jadranske obale.This paper analyzes the meteorological conditions responsible for the floods of October 29, 2018. Data were processed using statistical methods: mean, moving averages, and were collected during the period from June 1 to October 31 by the National Hydrometeorological Service. They are presented using various graphs that show hourly values of the meteorological conditions analyzed (air pressure, air temperature, precipitation) over the five months. An analysis of meteorological conditions provided answers to questions that caused flooding along the Adriatic coast on October 29, 2018

    The impact of fishing on coral reefs

    U ovom radu opisan je utjecaj ribolova na koraljne grebene. Koraljni grebeni su staništa velikog broja vrsta riba, mekušaca i rakova koji su nezamjenjiv izvor proteina za lokalno stanovništvo, kao i značajan izvor prihoda zbog visokih tržišnih vrijednosti. Gospodarski najznačajnije su ribe iz porodica Serranidae i Lutjanidae, a veliku ulogu imaju i beskralježnjaci, posebice jastozi (Panulirus argus, Jasus edwardii), morski trpovi (koljeno Echinodermata), morski puž Trochus nilocticus i hobotnica (Octopus vulgaris). Izlov na grebenu najčešće se obavlja automatiziranim i ručnim povrazima, parangalima i vršama, dok je pridnena povlačna mreža koća zabranjena. Osim navedenog, iskorištavanje koraljnih grebena provodi se i nedozvoljenim, ali profitabilnim metodama, poput ribolova eksplozivom ili korištenjem otrova poput cijanida. Kontrola ribolova provodi se primjenom različitih, više ili manje uspješnih mjera, a za očuvanje i obnovu živog svijeta koraljnih grebena do sada su se pokazala najučinkovitijima proglašenja zaštićenih morskih područja. Budućnost koraljnih grebena je neizvjesna zbog niza negativnih, uglavnom antropogenih utjecaja te će stoga trebati uložiti znatne napore kako bi se osigurala dugoročna održivost ovih jedinstvenih i bogatih morskih zajednica.This thesis presents the impact of fishing on coral reefs. Coral reefs are habitats of a large number of species of fish, molluscs and crustaceans, which are an irreplaceable source of protein for the local population as well as a significant source of income due to high market values. Commercially most important are fish of the families Serranidae and Lutjanidae, and invertebrates, especially lobsters (Panulirus argus, Jasus edwardii), sea cucumbers (phylum Echinodermata), the sea snail Trochus nilocticus and the common octopus (Octopus vulgaris). Fishing on the reef is most often performed by automated or manual lines, longlines and traps, while use of bottom trawl nets is prohibited. In addition, the exploitation of coral reefs is carried out by illegal but profitable methods such as fishing with dynamite, or use of poisons such as cyanide. Fisheries controls are carried out by applying different, more or less successful measures, and proclamation of protected marine areas appears to be the most effective method for conservation and restoration of coral reefs so far. The future of coral reefs is uncertain due to a number of negative, mostly anthropogenic impacts and therefore considerable efforts will be required to ensure the long-term sustainability of these unique and rich marine communities

    Epidemiology of Cryptosporidium spp. in shellfish from aquaculture

    U ovom diplomskom radu predstavljeni su rezultati istraživanja prisutnosti protozoarnog nametnika Cryptosporidium spp. i enterokoknih bakterija u sredozemne dagnje (Mytilus galloprovincialis) iz akvakulture. Jedinke korištene u istraživanju prikupljene su na uzgajalištu Stipan Jaz u Marini pokraj Trogira, ostavljene su dva dana u moru izloženom mikrobiološkom onečišćenju (u blizini Kaštel Sućurca), a potom su postavljene u tri pokusna bazena za pročišćavanje sa slobodnim protokom morske vode, na Institutu za oceanografiju i ribarstvo u Splitu. Analizirano je 240 uzoraka, od čega 120 uzoraka škrgi i 120 uzoraka plašta dagnji, prikupljenih tijekom četiri vremenske točke: nulto stanje prilikom postavljanja u bazene, te nakon 12, 24 i 48 sati pročišćavanja. Cryptosporidium spp. analiziran je iz uzoraka škrgi i plašta dagnji ugniježđenom lančanom reakcijom polimerazom, međutim, bez pozitivnog rezultata. Na to je mogla utjecati vremensko razdoblje u kojem su školjkaši bili pod antropogenim utjecajem, jako niska koncentracija oocista pristunih u moru u Kaštel Sućurcu, te određeni kemijski i fizički čimbenici (amonijak, pH, salinitet, temperatura, sunčevo zračenje, nedostatak oborina). Istraživanje koncentracije enterokoknih bakterija dalo je očekivane rezultate iz kojih je vidljiva visoka početna koncentracija enterokoknih bakterija koja nakon 48 sati pročišćavanja značajno opada. Može se zaključiti da Cryptosporidium spp. nema, ili ga ima u tako malim količinama koje nisu dovoljne da se akumulira i dokaže u dagnji, te samim time ne predstavlja opasnost za čovjeka. Ujedno, dagnje se kroz 48 sati pročišćavanjem oslobode enterokoknih bakterija do razine koncentracija koje su prihvatljive za konzumaciju.The results of research on the presence of protozoan Cryptosporidium spp. and enterococci in the Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from aquaculture are presented in this thesis. Specimens used in this research were collected from the farming site Stipan Jaz in Marina near Trogir, left for two days in the marine environment exposed to microbiological contamination (nearby Kaštel Sućurac) and subsequently placed in the three experimental pools for purification with flow-through seawater system, at the Institute of oceanography and fisheries, Split. In total 240 samples were processed; 120 gill and mantle samples collected during four time points: 0, 12, 24 and 48 h after placement in the experimental pools. The presence of Cryptosporidium spp. was analysed from gills and mantle using nested PCR, however with no positive result. This may be due to the insufficient time that mussels were held under the microbiological contamination in the marine environment, very low concentration of oocyst in the sea column in the Kaštel Sućurac, and/ or certain chemical and physical factors (ammonia, pH, salinity, temperature, sun radiation, luck of rainfall). Analysis of the concentration of enterococci gave the expected results that show a high initial concentration of enterococci, which after 48 hours of purification, significantly decreases. It can be concluded that Cryptosporidum spp. is not present or is present in very low quantity, being not enough to accumulate and become detectable in mussels, therefore not posing a risk to humans. In addition, after 48 hours held in purification system, mussels decrease their initial concentration of enteroccoci to acceptable concentrations

    Parental care in fishes

    Roditeljska skrb razvijena je kod samo 25% vrsta riba, ali je jako raznolika. Slatkovodne vrste riba više skrbe o potomcima (57% porodica) nego morske vrste (16% porodica). Postoji pet mogućih načina provođenja roditeljske skrbi: odsustvo skrbi nakon skrivanja (ne)oplođenih jaja, skrb mužjaka, skrb ženke, biparentalna i multiparentalna skrb. Skrb samo mužjaka (očinska) dominira s 84%. Skrb samo ženki (majčinska) je tipično povezana s unutarnjim nošenjem potomstva. Roditeljska skrb poboljšava preživljavanje i razvoj mladih. Tri glavna troška skrbi su smanjeno preživljavanje roditelja, produljeno vrijeme do idućeg mrijesta i smanjen fekunditet u budućnosti. Roditeljska skrb kod riba manifestira se u traženju sigurnog mjesta za polaganje jaja, u zaštiti već izlegnutih jaja (od hipoksije, sušenja, patogena), gradnji gnijezda, obrani i hranjenju mladih što je rijetko i kratkoročno. Neke vrste riba razvile su specijalne morfološke strukture na tijelu za čuvanje jaja. Nose ih tako na specijaliziranim koštanim kukama, na koži abdomena, ispod škrga, u ustima ili ih čuvaju u utrobi (viviparija). Čuvanje slobodno plivajućih stadija kod riba je rijetkost. Roditeljska skrb kod riba bitno se razlikuje u odnosu na skrb kod drugih kralježnjaka. Znanstvenici smatraju da je roditeljska skrb kod riba imala utjecaj na evoluciju roditeljske skrbi kod životinja generalno.Parental care is evolved in only 25% of fish species, but is highly variable. The freshwater species provide more care for offspring (57% families) than marine species (16% families). There are five possible types of parental care: absence of care after hiding (un)fertilized eggs, male, female, biparental and multiparental care. The male-only care (paternal) dominates with 84%. Female-only (maternal) care is typically associated with internal bearing. The benefit of parental care is that it improves survival and development of young. Three main costs are decreased parental survival, increased time until the next breeding attempt and reduced future fecundity. The parental care in fishes is manifested in finding a protected place for laying eggs, in protection of already hatched eggs (from hypoxia, drying, pathogens), nest building, defence and feeding which is rare and short-term. Some fish species have developed special morphological structures on the body to guard eggs. They carry them in hook, on the skin of abdomen, under the gills, in mouth or keep them in the womb (vivipary). Safeguarding free floating forms in fish is seldom.     Oceanographic analysis of the Adriatic coastal areas

    Svrha ovog završnog rada je objasniti utjecaj oceanografskih, meteoroloških i hidroloških čimbenika (salinitet, temperatura, vjetar, oborine, protok rijeka...) na priobalna područja Jadrana. Analizirana su četiri priobalna područja Jadrana: Tršćanski zaljev, talijansko priobalno područje, hrvatsko priobalno područje i albanski šelf. Na Tršćanski zaljev jak utjecaj ima rijeka Soča zbog čega dolazi do promjene u temperaturi i salinitetu u zaljevu. Izmjerena najniža temperatura je 3,95°C na dubini od 22 metra te salinitet od 38,15 na istoj mjernoj postaji. Zapadnojadranska struja duž talijanske obale može se podijeliti na tri dijela: sjeverni, srednji i južni. Hrvatsko priobalje je dio istočne obale Jadrana. Za razliku od talijanske (zapadne) obale koja je nerazvedena i plitka, hrvatska je obala bogata otocima i rtovima, pogotovo duž dalmatinskog dijela gdje more doseže dubinu i do 100 metara. Najveći utjecaj na strujanje duž istočnog dijela Jadrana ima vjetar. Dva najpoznatija i najčešća vjetra na Jadranu su jugo i bura. Mjerenja pokazuju da razina mora raste s jugom, a spušta se s burom. Oceanografski i meteorološki čimbenici - temperatura, salinitet, struje, vjetar i oborine, ponajbolje su istraženi 80-tih godina prošlog stoljeća na prostoru Kaštelanskoga i Riječkoga zaljeva zbog potencijalne opasnosti od onečišćenja okoliša. Oceanografski uvjeti na albanskom šelfu još uvijek nisu dovoljno dobro istraženi zbog maloga broja provedenih istraživanja.The purpose of this final paper is to explain the influence of oceanographic, meteorological and hydrological factors (salinity, temperature, wind, precipitation, river flow ...) on the coastal areas of the Adriatic. Four coastal areas in the Adriatic are analysea: the Gulf of Trieste, the Italian coastal area, the Croatian coastal area and the Albanian shelf. There is a strong influence of the Isonco River on the Gulf of Trieste, which results in a change in temperature and salinity in the Gulf. The lowest temperature measured was 3.95°C at a depth of 22 meters and a salinity of 38.15 at the same measuring station. Western Adriatic Current (WAC) along the italian coast can be divided into three streams: north, middle and south. The Croatian coast is part of the eastern Adriatic coast. Unlike the Italian (western) coast, which is undeveloped and shallow, the Croatian coast is rich in islands and capes, especially along the Dalmatian part where the water reaches depths of up to 100 meters. The greatest influence on the flow along the eastern part of the Adriatic has wind. The two most famous winds in the Adriatic are sirocco and bora. Measurements reveal that sea levels rise with the sirocco, and it goes down during bora. Oceanographic and meteorological factors - temperature, salinity, currents, wind and precipitation - were best explored in the 1980s in the area of the Kaštela Bay and Rijeka Bay, due to environmental pollution threat. The oceanographic conditions on the Albanian shelf have not yet been sufficiently investigated due to the small number of studies conducted

    Akvakultura atlantske plavoperajne tune (Thunnus Thynnus) najvećim se dijelom temelji na ribolovu, iako posljednjih godina bilježimo različite pokušaje i istraživanja u svrhu postizanja umjetnog mrijesta. Visoka tržišna vrijednost i potražnja za tunom dovela je do dugogodišnjih prelova i velikog pritiska na divlje populacije, što je rezultiralo uvođenjem regulative i ograničenja na ulove putem propisanih kvota. Cilj ovog završnog rada je predstaviti razvoj događaja u akvakulturi atlantske plavoperajne tune (T. thynnus), s naglaskom na dosadašnje rezultate istraživanja umjetnog mrijesta koji se potican putem oslobađajućeg hormona (GnRHa).Aquaculture of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) is largely based on fishing, although in the last years we have various experiments and researches for the purpose of achieving artificial spawning. The high market value and market demand for tuna has led to the long-term overfishing and high pressure on wild populations, which led to deployment of measures of regulation and restriction on the catch. The aim of this thesis was to present the development of aquaculture of the Atlantic bluefin tuna (T. thynnus), with special emphasis being placed on the results of an artificial spawning which was stimulated by the Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormon Agonist (GnRHa)
