Phaistos disc. A look from the 21st century.

    No full text
The Phaistos disk was made in the time following the expedition to the country of Punt, organized by Queen Hatshepsut. That is, in the Middle Kingdom, which coincides with the conclusions of other researchers of the artifact. The country of manufacture was most likely Egypt, which can be assumed, given the similarity of the disk signs and Egyptian hieroglyphs, as well as the presence of an outstanding sculptural and ceramic tradition in the country of the pharaohs. The manufacturing technology was the same for the disk, as for other clay products of the time, and there is no reason to consider the issue of seals (stamps) as a special form of processing this unique subject. Purpose of the disk: with caution, we assume that it was an object that serves to receive predictions. The signs most likely represent pictographic records, so the question of the language of the disc does not arise. For the same reason, it does not seem significant to consider the problem of the direction in which characters are read: in logograms, the order of the icons may not matter

Published as part of project Edition and Translation of the Orations of Enea Silvio Piccolomini / Pope Pius IIIn 1438, the Council of Basel undertook to confer ecclesiastical offices and benefices instead of the pope, whom it had deposed. It therefore became necessary to establish proper procedures, especially for the appointment of bishops. The Council’s Committee of Twelve, of which Enea Silvio Piccolomini was a frequent member, drafted a decree requiring commissioners to hear testimonies about candidates for episcopal office and to report back to the council under oath. As the recommendation met with resistance among the council fathers, Piccolomini undertook to defend the motion in an oration to a General Congregation. He was not successful, and the proposed decree was not passed

    No full text
International audienceFaced with a world full of resignifications that, in their flexibility, denote the dynamics with which societies reinvent themselves, ethnomusicology is another area of knowledge that needs reflecting, with its methodological instruments, a an efficient mixture of scientific rigour and the human capacity to truly listen to others. This article is divided into three parts: We begin with a reflection on the power relations established by and about songs and sounds; later, we bring two examples that reflect the power relations and symbolisms in the conception of noise, to finally link them with a discussion on coloniality, noise and the ethnographic glance.

    No full text
International audienceThis paper introduces, documents and reflects on an intercontinental live patching experience based on simultaneous remote interaction using the software Kiwi, and that can be subsumed under several features of Ubiquitous Music. The experience involved two academic groups based in three different universities between Brazil and France, namely, a research group from the two Brazilian Federal Universities of Acre and Paraíba, and a working group based at the University Paris 8 in France. The intercontinental simultaneous interaction may trigger reflections on the implications of the presence/absence of the human being, on the implicit patterns of territorialisation reproduced in the context of intercontinental live patching, and on the operative action of mnemonic processes within the practice
