Processos Híbridos na Sonorização da Poesia Visual
International audiencePoetry is historically a fundamental part of the field of Arts, verbal language and its poetic versatility can be explored in infinite ways in artistic productions. The purpose of this article is to present poetry as a dilutor of the border between languages. It introduces a reflection on the relationship between sound, visual and musical productions both in ubiquitous music and in hybrid arts research. The text starts from a study of the historical context of the 20th century avant-gardes to recent research on ubiquitous music and its applications. There is also the exhibition of the artistic process and authorial experiences with visual poetry as a score or sound guide and its possible future development
Mixing the Frames. Horizontal and Vertical Paralepsis as a Metaleptic Tool for Activating the Fantastic Linkage within a Model of Cognitive and Hermeneutical Processes. The Case of 'Josef K.' by Michele Mari
Since Genette first coined the term paralepsis in 1972 to define an unexpected deviation from the focalization statute of a narrative, there have been few narratological studies on this figure. In the light of the works of cognitive science and narratology and some of its postulates, this article propose the construction of a model of the cognitive and hermeneutical processes involved in narrative experience and the placement, within this model, of possible linguistic, narrative and paradigmatic transgression, that can allow the fantastic linkage to emerge. At the same time this article propose an updated definition of paralepsis as a metaleptic tool, as unexpected information that does not concern only an alteration of focalization but an ontological transgression of the levels of narration, delimiting the scope of two potential categories, both with two subtypes (top-down and bottom-up vertical paralepsis; internal and external horizontal paralepsis), and applying its implications to the analysis of the short story 'Josef K.' by Michele Mari (present in the collection Fantasmagonia of 2012)
Wittgenstein and the sciences
International audienceIn the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, Wittgenstein states that man has the ability to construct languages with which all meanings may be expressed, but that it is humanly impossible to immediately extract its logic from it. Thus, language is a costume that disguises thought while proposition is a figuration of reality. This paper is aimed at showing how the position of the Tractatus in relation to sciences puts aside the idea that scientific knowledge should be rooted in raw data, that is, observations that may be made regardless of any theoretical orientation. Accordingly, this study claims that the Tractarian position does not admit the presumption that behind raw data there is a reality that is independent of the observer, considering that, as stated by Wittgenstein, the limits of language indicate the limits of the world, and not the other way around
The Ethnographic Quest in the Midst of COVID-19
International audienceThe outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 has threatened ethnographic inquiry, undermining its quintessential characteristic. Participant observation, then, has been thoroughly dismembered by the radical measures implemented to prevent the spread of the virus. This phenomenon, in short, has dragged anthropologists to a liminal state within which ethnography is paradoxically caught in an onto-epistemological unstable vortex. The question of being here and not there, during the pandemic, is epitomised in the instability of different spatio-temporal contexts that overlap through technological mediations. Reflecting on previous fieldwork experiences and current virtual inquiries with the Shuar of the Ecuadorian Amazon unfolds how COVID-19 has thoroughly reshaped how the author approaches subjects' socio-ecological settings. Against this background, the article argues that corporeal immersion remains a necessary condition for the anthropological scrutiny of multispecies relationalities amidst the challenging times of the Anthropocene. The article nevertheless demonstrates that the intellectual efforts to grasp the different material temporalities of virtual spaces embrace the ethical principles concerning the renunciation of fieldwork with vulnerable communities. Furthermore, a reflective and speculative stance is proposed to actualise the snapshots of faraway physicalities linking them to past embodied and multi-sensory experiences. It is ultimately theorised how these mnemonic devices operate as creative forms of inquiry that overcome the pandemic consequences, extra-stimulating our cognitive capabilities to reflect on prior and possible socio-material interactions
Performing Restoration Shakespeare "Then" and "Now": A Case Study of Davenant's Macbeth
International audienceFocusing on a case study of William Davenant's Macbeth (c.1664), this article sets out to explore how and why Restoration adaptations of Shakespeare's plays succeeded in performance in their own time (especially in the 1660s and 1670s) and how they might be revived for audiences today. To achieve this, the article combines theater history and literary criticism with practice-based performance scholarship. Firstly, it draws on reviews and reports from the Restoration to examine how and why rewriting and adaptation were necessary to ensure the survival of Shakespeare's plays after the end of the English Civil War. In the same segment, the article also examines how the emphasis on musical and visual spectacle and the use of heavily revised playtexts were received by seventeenth-century playgoers. The article then uses observations and conclusions made during a rare professional production of Davenant's Macbeth at the Folger Theatre in Washington, DC (2018) to investigate how Restoration adaptations of Shakespeare can inform modern theater practice. The conflicts and obstacles that were encountered in this production, and the possibilities and solutions that were discovered, can offer lessons as well as strategies for performing Restoration Shakespeare both now and in the future. By considering the creative choices made during the Folger's production and investigating how these were received by reviewers and audiences, the article suggests a selective and adaptive approach to using Restoration Shakespeare in modern theater practice: namely, one that exploits the performance potential of the musical spectacle and of the new characters that were added by Restoration adapters but treats with caution the revisions of Shakespeare's plots and language
REZA SOLADA: PROCESSOS DE ENSINO APRENDIZAGEM DO VIOLÃO ENTRE MÚSICOS DA COLÔNIA CINCO MIL
We intend to present in this research one of the musical practices that occurs in the Santo Daime lineage known as Cinco Mil, an autonomous and independent strand created by Sebastião Mota de Melo during the 1970s. Supported by research based on participant observation and a bibliographic survey, we will try to initially approach certain teaching and learning processes of the sacred-musical repertoire practiced in this context with a focus on on the guitar.
Domestic Ubimus
International audienceINTRODUCTION: In this paper we discuss concepts and practices that point to a new field of ubiquitous music (ubimus) research centered on domestic settings. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this paper is to document and share a preliminary study of the use of taste as a trigger for creative decisions and a comparative study of creative music making done at home and in transitional settings. METHODS: Groundwork in this area encompasses the design, implementation and deployment of ubimus systems. Key aspects include sonic resources and metaphors for creative action based on multimodality. RESULTS: The results indicate that unpredictable sonic environments foster originality but may compromise the subjects' creative performance-reducing their level of engagement and fun and the possibilities for collaboration, while increasing the cognitive demands of the activity. Home seems to furnish a positive context as long as the objective is not to increase the originality of the outcomes. CONCLUSION: The effectiveness of taste as a scaffold for creative decisions was partially confirmed, demanding further studies. These results have implications for both the artistic aspects of sound making and the everyday usage of sound for distant socializing in domestic settings, posing renewed challenges to the ongoing STEAM initiatives
