Bilingual practices in the process of initiating and resolving lexical problems in students' collaborative writing sessions

    No full text
International audienceThis study deals with the sequential organization of language choice and code-switching between Persian as a first language and Swedish as a second language in the process of initiating and resolving a problem of understanding and producing the correct version of a lexical item. The data consist of detailed transcripts of audio tapings of two bilingual students' collaborative writing sessions within the frame of a one-year master's program in computer science in a multilingual setting at a Swedish university. The students, both Persianspeaking, are advanced speakers of Swedish as a second language. For this article, four lexical language-related episodes, where code-switching between Persian and Swedish occurs, are analyzed. The analyzed excerpts in this article are drawn from a corpus of data consisting of language-related episodes identified and transcribed in the audio tapings. We employ a conversation analysis (CA) approach for the analysis of bilingual interaction. This means that the meaning of the code-switching in the interaction is described in terms of both global (the conversational activity at large) and local interactional factors. In the analysis, a close step-by-step analysis of the turn-taking procedures demonstrates how the communicative meaning of the students' bilingual behavior in a lexical episode is determined in its local production in the emerging conversational context and how it can be explicated as part of the following social actions: drawing attention to a problem, seeking alliance when a problem is made explicit and confirming intersubjective understanding when the problem is resolved

Music in the Gymnasium. Set of assumptions and terms in music education through a discourse analytical approach

The author makes use of action research methodology in order to change the oral interaction patterns of an undergraduate grammar course, so that male and female students are encouraged to split even the time dedicated to student talk activity. The idea is that if female students form 75% of the class, they should get 75% of the students' talking time. At the same time, in accordance with action research tradition, the author studies this very change. The teacher of the class is identical to the author of this article, thus, as often in action research focusing pedagogy, the teacher is the researcher. The data comprise the teacher's journal, students' questionnaires, and an audio-recorded observation of 45 minutes. The results show that it is possible to split the student talk activity even between the male and female students, but this distribution was not obtained until the fourth and last class. The strategies used by the teacher was (a) to distribute questions in a regulated way, (b) to encourage female students in terms of establishing eye contact during the class and to engage in jokes and small talk, and (c) to get back to the female students that had already talked, in terms of asking for feed back, e.g., ”did I answer your question?”. The male students were not encouraged in the same way. Further, the results show that the teacher felt awkward and stiff at first as she prevented herself from turning mainly to the male students. This feeling declined as the change proceeded, and the teacher rather turned to the whole group. 75% of the students were positive or slightly positive to the process, while 25% were indifferent. None expressed negative feelings and none expressed a feeling of having been neglected

"Doing" Interviewer Roles in TV Interviews

    No full text
The article suggests an action-based taxonomy for interviews that reflects the interviewers behavior, depending on whether the interviewee is invited to, e.g., produce an argumentation for or account of something, to declare something or to tell a story. Using the conversation analytic method a range of Danish interviews are analysed. It shows three different interviewer roles and how they are done

http://www.duo.uio.no/publ/ILN/2005/56996/KEKristoffersenICPLA10.pdfThis paper presents findings from a perceptual and acoustic study of vowel productions in the speech of three children with cri du chat syndrome, all raised in Norwegian-speaking communities. It is shown that for all three subjects there is considerable variation in different attempts at producing the same target vowels, but to a varying extent depending on both vowel height and quantity. There is also inter-subject variation. Furthermore, there is considerable acoustic overlap between attempts at producing different target vowels. Finally, only to a limited extent do the vowel productions of the three children form vowel spaces comparable to the vowel space of the target language, but again there is inter-subject variation. Keywords: Cri du chat syndrome, vowel productions, acoustic analysi

    Danskhed i debatten

    No full text

National audienceThis article proposes to pay attention on the sources of historical demography in the old eparchy of Arad. At the end of XVIIth century, the Ottoman domination in the zone have been filled with the domination of Habsburgs and the Arad city became a significant orthodox Episcopal centre subordinated in religious plan to the metropolitan of Karlovitz. For the reconstitution and the knowledge of the demographical aspects into old counties Arad and Zarand, we can use many documents, which are preserved in the Departmental Direction of National Archive of Arad. Various censuses, tax conscriptions, wills and especially parochial registers of the marital status are sources of first category. With the methods used by Michel Fleury and Louis Henry this sources are essential to know the behaviours demographic for the various ethnos groups, as well majority Rumanian as the population German, Hungarian, Serb or Jewish which have lived in these places 300 years ago
