In section 1, multimodal corpora are defined and described, in section 2, reasons are given for why multimodal corpora are created, and in section 3, there is a discussion of some issues to keep in mind when creating and analyzing a multimodal corpus. Measurements and Distortions: A review of the British system of research assessment
No full textMany European countries are devising systems for measuring academic research output and allocating university funding according to the results. The Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation has been working on a model for allocating 5 per cent of the budget for universities competitively on the basis of a ‘quality barometer', but have repeatedly delayed its implementation. Without waiting, some universities already have their own schemes and debates have explored different models. According to a report for the OECD, there is no shortage of such models for ‘steering by numbers'. Among them, the British RAE continues to rouse interest, even though it is itself undergoing change. The paper reviews the many official reports and academic studies of the RAE to draw out the strengths and problems of this peer review system and its bibliometric and other alternatives. It examines the ways that, according to the Funding Council for England, ‘Any assessment process, particularly one as important to its subjects as the RAE, will distort the very thing it intends to measure'. The paper identifies three ways that such assessment systems skew university activities much more fundamentally than so far recorded in the literature: distorting the conditions for critical dialogue among academics; creating ‘regional deserts' where certain core disciplines are unavailable, with consequences for social inequalities; and promoting the inefficient use of public finds, when competition to improve rankings results in universities' subsidising the profits of the four big commercial journal publishers
The Reference Return Ratio
No full textInternational audienceThe paper introduces a new journal impact measure called The Reference Return Ratio (3R). Unlike the traditional Journal Impact Factor (JIF), which is based on calculations of publications and citations, the new measure is based on calculations of bibliographic investments (references) and returns (citations). A comparative study of the two measures shows a strong relationship between the 3R and the JIF. Yet, the 3R appears to correct for citation habits, citation dynamics, and composition of document types – problems that typically are raised against the JIF. In addition, contrary to traditional impact measures, the 3R can not be manipulated ad infinitum through journal self-citations

No full textNational audienceThis article investigates the functions of the poet's preface and its development in Danish literary history from the Baroque to the Romantic period. Using Gérard Genette's synchronistic study of paratext as the basis, the article uncovers the formal, rhetorical and thematic features of the genre. The formal features help segregate the preface from the main text and thus forge a factual rather than a fictional pact with the reader. This factual pact is supported by the rhetorical and thematic features, as the poet's preface speaks directly to the reader and includes references to the extratextual reality, for example by means of autobiographical information. Through a study of the poet's preface in the Baroque period represented by Anders Arrebo and Thomas Kingo, the Classicist period represented by Ludvig Holberg and Christian Falster, the Sentimentalist period represented by Johannes Ewald and Jens Baggesen, and the romantic period represented by Adam Oehlenschläger and Schack Staffeldt, the article argues that the primary function of the poet's preface has been to develop the concept of the artist. Thus, as a genre, the poet's preface is considered more of an art-critical and poetological introduction with varying persona structures than a guide to the reader

No full textOpen Access is gaining momentum in Denmark – not only among libraries but also among the research community and at the political level. Open Access journals exist and the number will grow, self archiving has been established among some institutions and there is ongoing work on a preservation infrastructure. One of the most advanced areas in this aspect is astronomy and the role of Open Access in this area is described from a Danish perspective

No full texthttp://www.duo.uio.no/publ/ILN/2008/70893/Kristoffersen_2008a.pdfThis article reports on a longitudinal case study of consonant productions in one Norwegian girl with Cri du chat syndrome from age 4;6 to age 9;4. It was shown that she had many articulation errors throughout the period of observation. Furthermore, these errors were shown to fall into three main categories: 1) errors of differentiation and tuning, 2) errors of coordination and sequencing, and 3) missing gestures. Also, omissions of segments were reported to be frequent. In sum, the consonant productions by this girl were found to be both delayed and deviant, as compared to normally developing children. The number of errors, however, decreased as she grew older, resulting in more accurate renditions of the target words

No full textDette kompendium giver en oversigt over russisk oversættelsesforskning fra 1960'erne til begyndelsen af det 21. århundrede. Der gives en kritisk analyse af den undertiden inkonsekvente brug af grundlæggende begreber såsom ækvivalens, adækvans og oversættelsenheden, og de forskellige definitioner og afgrænsninger af oversættelse i den russiske forskning diskuteres. De teoretiske overvejelser ledsages af et stort antal eksempler, specielt oversættelser fra russisk til engelsk og omvendt. Kompendiet kan anvendes som baggrundslitteratur i forbindelse med avancerede oversættelsesstudier på universitetsniveau.This contribution surveys Russian translation research from the 1960's till the beginning of the 21st century. It provides a critical analysis of the sometimes inconsistent use in Russian research of fundamental concepts of the field, such as equivalence, adequacy and the unit of translation and discusses definitions and delimitations of translation proposed in the literature. The theoretical discussions are accompanied by a number of examples, primarily translations of Russian into English and vice versa. The presentation can be used as background literature in connection with translation studies at an advanced university level
Hør dog hvad de siger!: Et argument for en retorisk tilgang til holdningsundersøgelser
No full textI årene 2000-2005 gennemførte Nordisk Sprogråd en sammenlignende undersøgelse af graden af engelskindflydelse i de nordiske sprogsamfund samt holdninger til denne indflydelse. Det er almindeligt accepteret i nordisk sprogpolitik at opfatte dansk som meget påvirket af engelsk og danskerne som tilsvarende engelskvenlige, og modsat at opfatte Island som meget lidt engelskpåvirket og islændingene som tilsvarende engelskfjendtlige. Af de centralskandinaviske lande, menes Norge at være tættere på Island, og Sverige at ligge et sted i mellem Norge og Danmark. Det er denne alment accepterede fordom (retfærdig eller uretfærdig) som projektet ønskede af afprøve. På papiret ser det let ud at optælle dansk og sammenligne det med islandsk. De praktiske problemer det kaster af sig, vil jeg ikke komme ind på her, se (Jarvad and Sandøy 2007; Kvaran 2007; Selback and Sandøy 2007). Min interesse er udelukkende for holdningsundersøgelsen, hvilke problemer den giver, og hvordan man med en retorisk vending måske kan komme bagom nogle af problemerne
