MOVIMENTO ESTUDANTIL NA UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DO ACRE: PRÁTICAS E REPRESENTAÇÕES SOBRE A AMAZÕNIA (1977-1990)

    No full text
This dissertation aims to understand how the Student Movement (ME) at the Federal University of Acre was in dialogue with the intense social conflicts of the Acre society where it was inserted. Looking for the study to show how the symbologies that refer to life in the Amazon were used within the Student Movement and how the students introduced the discourse in defense of the forest within the movement. After the military coup of 1964, the Amazon became the target of projects and policies aimed at occupying its territory in a process to "integrate" the region in the wave of modernization and capital accumulation in Brazil. In 1977 came the leadership of the Central Student Directory of the Federal University of Acre students who were already participating in other social movements and then made the Student Movement another agent in the struggle for land, at a time when expropriation of the same generated social ills . The narratives constructed by the students about the Amazon found in the name of Chapa as Seringueira (1977) and in a slogan like Preserving to Survive (1981) and in the demand for a teaching oriented to the Amazonian reality (1981) point us the students' dialogue with the local themes, and how they represented them within the institution, bring the "forest" to the university. The research relied on secondary and primary sources. This is the documentary part of the collection of the Central Directory of Students of the Federal University of Acre, the consultation of newspapers and the holding of interviews with former leaders of the local Student Movement. As a theoretical reference, we refer to Roger Chartier (2002, 2011) Stuart Hall (2003), Alessandro Portel (2010), Valter Benjamim (1994) and others. Among the issues raised are the relation that the Student Movement maintained with the problems related to the land conflict in Acre, the use of the discourse in defense of the forest and the practices of resistance.

(Dis)figuring white template vision through Passione

    No full text
International audienceThis paper suggests that north-normative thought in Italian Studies must be disrupted by recovering the various Souths haunting and inhabiting white template vision. I propose to usefully disrupt north-normative colonial cartographies of vision by disclosing the “fleshy folds” of John Turturro’s complex audio-visual work Passione: Un’Avventura Musicale (2010). Passione is a documentary film which draws on, as it narrates the story of, a broad assemblage of Neapolitan music and theatricalities. Neapolitan music is often conflated with Italian traditional song or confined to the realm of regional music, in both popular interpretations and scholarly analyses (PLASTINO, 2007). This widespread conflation of Neapolitan and Italian traditional song, resulted in the porous Neapolitan voice (always allowing itself to be interpenetrated by an indeterminate other; PLASTINO, 2007) and its embodied performance manifestations (PLASTINO & SCIORRA, 2016) being largely overlooked. Under the legacies of discursive post-structuralist critique, Whiteness Studis largely neglects the sites through which (raced) bodies congeal (PUGLIESE, 2002). Film theorists, also, have inadequately situated the viewer, filmmaker and film as potentially subversive bodies of vision (SOBCHACK, 1992; cf. DYER, 1992). Against the grain of received north-normative and discursive analyses, in its task of Southern critical thinking, this paper deploys Vivienne Sobchack’s term “film’s body” (1992, p. viii), dispensing with the language of analyses which limit Passione’s capacity to signify to Turturro. Instead, I identify the white template bodies of director and researcher-viewer, but also various dissident sotto/terrone’d (allied global and Italian Southern) bodies resembling “embodied shadow archives” of Southernness and mediterraneity (ZACCARIA, 2015)

    No full text
International audienceThis study examines the validity of a 49-item verbal analogies test by the application of the Rasch model and concurrent validation procedure. The test was translated and modified by the researcher to be used for Iranian students. The test was administered to 186 Iranian undergraduates. The results indicated that the Rasch model fit the test after deleting eight items from the scale. Concurrent validation demonstrated that the test correlates significantly with other verbal and nonverbal fluid reasoning measures, and suggests that the instrument is potentially valid and useful as a measure of verbal analogical reasoning in the Persian language

The C-Test: A Valid Measure to Test Second Language Proficiency?

    No full text
The C-Test is a gap-filling test belonging to the family of the reduced redundancy tests which is used as an overall measure of general language proficiency in a second or a native language. There is no consensus on the construct underlying the C-Test and many researchers are still puzzled by what is actually activated when examinees take a C-Test. The purpose of the present study is to cast light on this issue by examining the factors that contribute to C-Test item difficulty. A number of factors were selected and entered into regression model to predict item difficulty. Linear logistic test model was also used to support the results of regression analysis. Findings showed that the selected factors only explained 12 per cent of the variance in item difficulty estimates. Implications of the study for C-Test validity and application are discussed

‘“Full of ugly sights, of ghastly dreams”: Dreams and Tragedy in Shakespeare’s Richard III’

    No full text
International audienceThis article argues that dreams are an important and deliberate part of Shakespeare’s conception of tragedy in Richard III. Shakespeare, when composing this play, exploited the uncertainty in his time about whether dreams were natural or supernatural phenomena in order to deploy dream devices as a form of commentary on the material as well as spiritual implications of his characters’ actions. As a result, dreams ultimately sharpen the play’s focus on human agency by amplifying the characters’ ambitions, crimes and guilty consciences

The MANBRIC-Technologies in the Forthcoming Technological Revolution

    No full text
International audienceIn this chapter, we analyze the relationship between Kondratieff waves and major technological revolutions on the basis of the theory of production principles and production revolutions, and offer some forecasts about the features of the Sixth Kondratieff Wave/the Fourth Industrial Revolution. We show that the technological breakthrough of the Sixth Kondratieff Wave may be interpreted as both the Fourth Industrial Revolution and as the final phase of the Cybernetic Revolution. We assume that the sixth K-wave in the 2030s and 2040s will merge with the final phase of the Cybernetic Revolution (which we call a phase of self-regulating systems). This period will be characterized by the breakthrough in medical technologies which will be capable of combining a number of other technologies into a single system of new and innovative technologies (we denote this system as a system of MANBRIC-technologies—i.e. medical, additive, nano-, bio-, robo-, info-, and cogno-technologies)

    C-Tests rapides: quelques analyses psychométriques

    No full text
The C-test as a measure of first and second language proficiency suffers from ceiling effect. That is, the C-test is very easy for native speakers and for advanced second language learners and many examinees obtain full scores. Therefore, the test cannot distinguish among advanced learners or native speakers. Grotjahn, Schlak, and Aguado (2010) and Grotjahn (2010) suggested Speeded C-test or Standard-C-test as a remedy for this problem. They argued that if C-test is administrated under time constraint it can better differentiate among advanced learners and native speakers. In this study we aimed to compare the psychometric characteristics of speeded and standard C-test and investigate the relationship between standard and speeded C-test and reading comprehension. One-hundred Iranian undergraduate EFL learners studying at Islamic Azad University and Tabaran University of Mashhad, Khorasan Razavi, Iran, were selected to take part in this research. A standard (power) C-test, a speeded C-test, and a reading comprehension test were given to the students. Findings revealed that both speeded C-test and standard C-test could measure reading comprehension ability but standard C-test is a better predictor of reading comprehension ability and enjoys higher reliability. Exploratory factor analysis of the data resulted in a one-factor solution. All C-test passages (speeded and power) and reading comprehension passages loaded heavily on the single extracted factor. Nevertheless, power C-test passages had higher loadings compared to speeded passages.

THE PROCESSES OF SYSTEMIC INTEGRATION IN THE WORLD SYSTEM

    No full text
International audienceThe paper discusses some aspects of integration of different regions and societies in the course of historical globalization. Within historical globalization one can observe a close correlation between such important processes as technological transformations, urbanization, political integration, struggle for political hegemony, etc. In the paper we analyze these correlations to associate historical globalization with phases of expansion. Within the expansion process we point out seven levels from the local level through the planetary one. The most significant changes were associated with crucial technological breakthroughs, or production revolutions, and other related transformations like the Urban Revolution. The latter can be regarded as a phase transition of the Afroeurasian world-system to a qualitatively new level of complexity. There are also several periods which one can define as landmarks in the world-system history. The paper also offers some theoretical ideas about cycles of divergence and convergence
