Two Poems by Friedrich Rückert translated by Alex McKeown.
Translations from the German of two poems by Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866). Both poems look back to the Persian poet Khwāja Shams-ud-Dīn Muḥammad Ḥāfeẓ-e Shīrāzī (1315-1390), commonly known as Hafiz. The first poem, 'Home', uses Hafiz's 'Takhallus' towards the end, but is an original poem by Rückert; the second, 'Bliss', is a translation of Rückert's translation from the Persian
MARIANNE AND WILLOUGHBY, LUCY AND COLIN: BETRAYAL, SUFFERING, DEATH AND THE POETIC IMAGE
Many of the song lyrics in Jane Austen’s personal music books (some collected or transcribed by her, some inherited or passed on from family members) are couched in the sentimental poetic diction prevalent in the eighteenth century, with highly conventional pastoral settings and imagery.
I have been particularly struck by a long ballad in seven parts titled ‘Colin and Lucy’, which is a 1783 setting by Tommaso Giordani of a 1725 poem by Thomas Tickell (1685-1740) describing the betrayal, death and revenge of a wronged woman. The printed music of this ballad is in a book inscribed by Jane Austen, and it seems likely that she was familiar with it and probably sang and played it herself.
Several incidents included in the song are echoed and perhaps deliberately parodied in Austen’s novel Sense and Sensibility (1811), although the rhetoric and imagery are strikingly different. The novel’s language, though often dramatic, is matter-of-fact and literal. In this paper I will discuss the ballad’s musical and lyrical rhetoric and how Austen alters and undercuts its poetic imagery in her treatment of similarly dramatic (though not fatal) events in the novel
On the resilience of small-island freshwater lenses: Evidence of the long-term impacts of groundwater abstraction on Bonriki Island, Kiribati

These lenses are highly vulnerable to salinization due to natural recharge variations and groundwater abstraction. Determining the sustainable yield from freshwater lenses is challenging because the lens response during drought periods and the long-term effects of pumping are both difficult to predict. The exceptionally detailed and long data record for Bonriki Island of the Tarawa atoll (Kiribati) made it possible to develop a three-dimensional variable-density model of the island. Field data and modelling results highlight the strong control of rainfall variability and pumping on the temporal dynamics of the freshwater lens. The model reproduces the salinity observations in both monitoring and pumping wells reasonably well, and provides a rare example of physically based island simulation based on an extensive data set. It enables the analysis of freshwater volume and fluxes of submarine groundwater discharge, which is impossible based on the field observations alone. Under natural as well as abstraction conditions, submarine groundwater discharge responds rapidly and almost proportionally to recharge. Theoretical model scenarios with scaled abstraction rates show that lens contraction caused by pumping is a nearly linear function of the total pumped volume, whereby the abstraction rate and the timing of depletion are approximately inversely proportional. Modelling indicates that when monthly recharge inputs fall below around 2500 m3/d (i.e., a flux of 1.7 mm/d) plus the abstraction rate, the lens tends to contract. Thus, despite the highly distributed and extensive abstraction network on Bonriki Island, a significant amount of recharge is eventually lost to submarine groundwater discharge. The long-term freshwater storage trend indicates that Bonriki Island’s lens is still contracting after 27.5 years of pumping, and lens thinning is threatening to impact the water supply salinity. This means that even permeable, small islands like Bonriki may take at least two decades to realise new equilibrium conditions that reflect pumping stresses, which is an important consideration in assessing the sustainable yield of small islands, in particular those less resilient to pumping than Bonriki

surgical procedures often concluded with nipple-areolar reconstruction
tattoo. The purpose of the tattoo is to increase the patients’
satisfaction with the appearance of the breast, however, no published
studies quantitatively compare patient satisfaction before vs.
after tattoo. In recent times nurse practitioners are increasingly performing
this specialised procedure previously undertaken by the
plastic surgeon, but there is no evidence to compare patient satisfaction
according to clinician.
Purpose: The objectives of this study are to examine patient satisfaction
pre- and post-nipple-areolar tattooing utilising a validated
patient-reported outcome measure the BREAST-Q, and to identify
any differences in patient satisfaction between the nurse practitioner
and plastic surgeon.
Methods: Data was collected from all breast reconstruction patients
who underwent nipple-areolar reconstruction tattooing over
a six-year period in a dedicated Breast Reconstruction Unit and had
completed a pre- and post-tattoo BREAST- Q questionnaire. Analysis
of data included paired t-test of pre- and post-tattoo scores and

A biolistic method for high-throughput production of transgenic wheat plants with single gene insertions

The relatively low efficiency of biolistic transformation and subsequent integration of multiple copies of the introduced gene/s significantly complicate the genetic modification of wheat (Triticum aestivum) and other plant species. One of the key factors contributing to the reproducibility of this method is the uniformity of the DNA/gold suspension, which is dependent on the coating procedure employed. It was also shown recently that the relative frequency of single copy transgene inserts could be increased through the use of nanogram quantities of the DNA during coating.
Results
A simplified DNA/gold coating method was developed to produce fertile transgenic plants, via microprojectile bombardment of callus cultures induced from immature embryos. In this method, polyethyleneglycol (PEG) and magnesium salt solutions were utilized in place of the spermidine and calcium chloride of the standard coating method, to precipitate the DNA onto gold microparticles. The prepared microparticles were used to generate transgenics from callus cultures of commercial bread wheat cv. Gladius resulting in an average transformation frequency of 9.9%. To increase the occurrence of low transgene copy number events, nanogram amounts of the minimal expression cassettes containing the gene of interest and the hpt gene were used for co-transformation. A total of 1538 transgenic wheat events were generated from 15,496 embryos across 19 independent experiments. The variation of single copy insert frequencies ranged from 16.1 to 73.5% in the transgenic wheat plants, which compares favourably to published results.
Conclusions
The DNA/gold coating procedure presented here allows efficient, large scale transformation of wheat.
