    Displacement and Emplacement in Narratives of Relocation by Romanian Women Authors

    The present paper analyses recent Romanian accounts of women's uprooting from a communist regime, foregrounding manners in which the migrants' transnational itineraries are punctuated by instances of groundedness that temporary anchor the protagonists in their translocal settings. More specifically, the article discusses the segmented itineraries of women migrants from Romania via different European countries to their final destination, the United States. I have chosen the syntagm "accounts of uprooting" instead of "migration literature", as the primary corpus of this analysis is made up of different literary genres: a novel, Train to Trieste by Domnica Radulescu and a memoir, The Gypsy Saw Two Lives, by Rodica Mihalis. The analysis of these creations introduces a comparative perspective on the shaping of translocal perceptions in the context of transnational migration. Consequently, the body of the paper investigates the migrant characters' relation to the European spaces where they settle before preparing their relocation to the USA. By adopting this approach, the discussion blends the axes of embeddedness and disembeddedness in order to provide a more comprehensive account of the intersections between gender and migration placed in a transnational context. Therefore, the discussion considers both the transgressive, fluid connotations of transnational processes and the individuals' need for stable structures despite their discontinuous itineraries

    There is international evidence to support early intervention strategies with families and children, that improve longer term outcomes for health. There is also evidence that supports the provision of appropriate services to women in the antenatal period as one of a range of factors for successful interventions that target families and infants. The context for antenatal interventions involves a brief period in a family’s life and such interventions need to be a component of community based interventions that link women and their babies into the community in a continuity of care framework. The Early Links Program which has been implemented at Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) is a program intending to address issues regarding the identifi cation and response to women who require extra supports during the antenatal period and of infants assessed to be at risk during the postnatal period. The Flinders Early Links Program commenced in September 2004, arising from the recognition of a need for a consistent identifi cation and response for high risk women and infants. FMC’s Early Links Program was modifi ed and adapted from the Strengthening Links Program that is in operation at Adelaide’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital. An Antenatal Assessment Tool was developed by FMC’s Social Work Service and the Women’s and Children’s Division, with the goal of providing a consistent screen for identifying women at risk. The universal administration of this Antenatal Assessment Tool to all women, at the earliest opportunity in their pregnancies, commenced in October 2005. The Southern Adelaide Health Service (SAHS) has commissioned this evaluation to determine the impact of the Early Links Program from the perspective of the staff and key stakeholders involved, including women who have participated in the Program. The Southern Adelaide Health Service Interim Strategic Plan for 2005-2010 includes an aim of “improving the level of support for young children and their families to assist these children having a good start in life” (p. 11). A key objective of the Strategic Plan is to “Reduce the risk and improve the health outcomes for infants and children vulnerable to harm” (p. 12). A key performance indicator included “A coordinated and systematic demonstration model is developed to improve health outcomes for vulnerable infants and children” (p. 13). The Flinders Early Links Program fi ts this objective as one model to “improve health outcomes for vulnerable infants and children” (Social Work and Counselling Services, 2006). The Southern Adelaide Health Service have proposed an evaluation to determine the impact of the Early Links Program, and in particular the impact of the Antenatal Assessment Questionnaire

This paper seeks to add to the small body of existing literature by reporting on a thematic analysis of existing media in which 18 sistergirls shared their experiences of family and community. The thematic analysis identified two themes within each of these topics. Specifically, when talking about family, both familial acceptance and rejection were salient themes. When talking about community, both the traditional role of sistergirls in their communities and negative responses from communities were salient themes. The paper concludes by suggesting that increased knowledge about the lives of sistergirls may assist social workers in supporting sistergirls both in their own outreach endeavours, and in providing more culturally competent services

To view a copy of this license, visit http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Plug-flow activated sludge reactors (ASR) that are step-feed with wastewater are widely adopted in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) due to their ability to maximise the use of the organic carbon in wastewater for denitrification. Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions are expected to vary along these reactors due to pronounced spatial variations in both biomass and substrate concentrations. However, to date, no detailed studies have characterised the impact of the step-feed configuration on emission variability. Here we report on the results from a comprehensive online N2O monitoring campaign, which used multiple gas collection hoods to simultaneously measure emission along the length of a full-scale, stepfed, plug-flow ASR in Australia. The measured N2O fluxes exhibited strong spatial-temporal variation along the reactor path. The step-feed configuration had a substantial influence on the N2O emissions, where the N2O emission factors in sections following the first and second step feed were 0.68% ± 0.09% and 3.5% ± 0.49% of the nitrogen load applied to each section. The relatively high biomass-specific nitrogen loading rate in the second section of the reactor was most likely cause of the high emissions from this section

    Distributions of Virus-Like Particles and Prokaryotes within Microenvironments

Previous studies in marine systems have shown significant shifts in microbial community abundance and composition over scales of micrometres to centimetres. This study investigates the microscale abundance distributions of virus-like particles (VLPs) and prokaryotes in the lower reaches of a river to determine the extent to which microscale microbial patchiness exists in freshwater systems. Here we report local hotspots surrounded by gradients that reach a maximum 80 and 107 fold change in abundance over 0.9 cm for prokaryotic and VLP subpopulations. Changes in prokaryotic and VLP hotspots were tightly coupled. There were no gradients at tens of centimetres across the boundary layers, which is consistent with strong mixing and turbulence-driven aggregation found in river systems. Quantification of the patchiness shows a marked asymmetry with patches 10 times greater than background common, but depletions being rare or absent in most samples. This consistent asymmetry suggests that coldspots depleted by grazing and lysis are rapidly mixed to background concentrations, while the prevalence of hotspots indicates persistence against disruption. The hotspot to coldspot relative abundance may be useful for understanding microbial river dynamics. The patchiness indicates that the mean- field approach of bulk phase sampling misses the microbially relevant community variation and may underestimate the concentrations of these important microbial groups
