Work Well-Being of Knowledge Workers : The Role and Perspectives of HR Directors

    No full text
Tämän maisterintutkielman tavoitteena oli tarkastella laadullisen tutkimuksen keinoin HR-johtajien näkemyksiä asiantuntijatyötä tekevien työhyvinvoinnista, siihen liittyvistä teki-jöistä sekä HR-johtajien omaa roolia sen edistämisessä. Työhyvinvoinnin monipuolisuutta lähestyttiin Mankan (2012) voimavaralähtöisen työhyvinvointimallin avulla. Tutkimukses-sa pyrittiin ymmärtämään, miten työhyvinvointi rakentuu HR-johtajien näkökulmasta ja millaisia toimia he tekevät sen tueksi. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena haastattelututkimuksena. Tutkimusaineisto koostui kuu-den suomalaisen HR-johtajan yksilöhaastatteluista eri toimialoilta. This master’s thesis explores HR directors’ perceptions of employee well-being in knowledge work and their role in supporting it. The concept of well-being is examined through a resource-based perspective, using Manka’s (2012) model of workplace well-being as the primary analytical framework. In addition, the role of HR directors is examined through the lens of challenges and changes experienced in the workplace well-being context, and the practical models they use to support well-being in the workplace. The research seeks to understand how HR directors perceive and support well-being in their organizations. The study was conducted as a qualitative interview study. The research data consisted of six thematic interviews with six Finnish HR directors representing different organizations and sectors. The data was analyzed using theory-guided content analysis, structured according to five key dimensions of well-being: leadership, the work community, the individual, the organzation and job managing. In addition, the analysis considered the role of HR directors in terms of the challenges and changes they face in their role in the workplace well-being context, and practices they use promoting well-being. According to the findings, HR directors perceive well-being as a broad and multidimensional phenomenon that can not be supported by isolated interventions alone. Instead, a strategic and long-term approach is needed across all organizational levels. Leadership, communication, individual resources, organizational strucutres and work manageability are seen as crucial in enabling workplace well-being. HR directors described themselves as strategic enablers who create the conditions for well-being and emphasized its close connection to organizational performance. The study offers timely insights into how HR directors in expert organizations understand and promote well-being. It supports the idea that employee well-being is not only a perso-nal experience but also a structural and cultural matter, deeply connected to the organizati-on’s performance. The findings may support HR professionals in developing well-being in the context of knowledge work

Navigating Indonesian populist currents: A multimodal critical discursive analysis of constructions of Javaneseness / Indonesianness in political leadership

    No full text
This thesis investigates how Prabowo Subianto, an Indonesian right-wing populist, mobilised voters during the 2024 presidential election through his campaign video, Prabowo Gibran Memang Istimewa (Prabowo Gibran Are Special). While much of the existing scholarship on populism centers on exclusionary rhetoric in Western contexts, this study shifts the analytical focus toward inclusive and culturally resonant strategies employed within an Eastern sociopolitical landscape. Drawing on Moffitt’s conceptualisation of populism as a political style, the Integrative Social Identity Model of Populist Leadership (ISIMPL), and the methodological framework of multimodal critical discursive psychology (MCDP), this thesis examines how Prabowo multimodally and discursively positioned himself as three distinct types of political leaders, each grounded in different repertoires of Javaneseness / Indonesianness. The role of social media, humour, and music in amplifying his electoral appeal was also considered. The analysis revealed three key subject positions, The Javanese, The Cuddly Grandpa, and The Man of the (Common) People, constructed through interpretative repertoires of gotong royong (unity), Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity), and rukun (harmony). Through a strategic combination of visual, sonic, textual, and verbal modalities, Prabowo framed himself as a culturally rooted, representative, and relatable figure who advocates for the everyday Indonesian. These leadership positions closely aligned with the ideological tenets of right-wing populism and the dimensions of effective populist leadership outlined in ISIMPL. His use of humour and music, disseminated through the social media platform YouTube, further enhanced his relatability and broadened his appeal. Ultimately, these efforts contributed to his successful bid in the 2024 Indonesian presidential election, securing his position in office until 2029. Overall, this thesis demonstrates how right-wing populists may strategically mobilise cultural values and media to construct compelling leadership identities. Future research should further explore the role of inclusive rhetorical styles, humour, and music within right-wing populist movements to broaden our understanding of populism

Maatalouden tulee kyetä ruokkimaan lukumäärältään kasvava ihmiskunta ja samalla ruoantuotan-non päästöjä tulisi kyetä vähentämään. Hallitusti liukenevat lannoitteet (CRF) pyrkivät parantamaan lannoitteiden käytön tehokkuutta ja vähentämään ympäristökuormitusta. Maailmalla on tehty tutkimusta näistä lannoitteista rajallisesti lähinnä maissilla (Zea mays L.), vehnällä (Triticum aestivum L.), ohralla (Hordeum vulgare L.) ja rapsilla (Brassica napus L.). Agriculture must be able to feed a growing global population, while also reducing emissions from food production. Controlled-release fertilizers (CRF) aim to improve nutrient use efficiency and decrease environmental impacts. Globally, research on these fertilizers has been done primarily on maize (Zea mays L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), and canola (Brassica napus L.), and the results about the benefits have been varying. According to the literature review, there has been no research on the use of CRFs for silage grass. The study aimed to investigate the differences in fertilizer effectiveness on timothy grass (Phleum pratense L.) using CRF compared to conventional fertilizer on the second harvest grass. The experimental part focused on the height of the grass, chlorophyll content and forage analyses at harvest time. The literature review examined the properties of CRFs and the previous research about fertilization trials. This field research focused on comparing liquid-form CRF with conventional fertilizer. According to the research, there was no difference in growth of timothy grass treated with CRF compared to conventional fertilizer. Both fertilized subjects grew better than the subject with no fertilizer. There was no statistically significant difference between the two fertilizer treatments regarding chlorophyll content. In the harvest-time samples, CRF fertilization resulted in lower crude protein content, lower proportion of protein digestible in the small intestine and lower magnesium content than conventionally fertilized. Additionally, the rumen protein balance was negative, unlike conventionally fertilized. There was no statistically significant difference in the dry matter yield. Based on this thesis, it can be concluded that CRF could be comparable to conventional fertilizer in terms of grass growth. The quality of the silage may be lower regarding protein content and related variables, and magnesium content. Further research is needed about different fertilization levels of CRFs and properties under different growing conditions

Relation between teachers’ professional development courses and teachers' beliefs about Mathematics education

    No full text
This thesis investigates the relationship between Finnish classroom teachers' professional development courses and their beliefs about the nature of mathematics and its teaching and learning. Drawing on Ernest’s (1991) theory and the TEDS-M framework (Blömeke & Kaiser, 2014), the study explores how beliefs shape and how professional development courses is connected with these beliefs. Data used in this thesis is from MathMot project and the data is collected from Finnish teachers using survey. Descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, and independent sample t-tests were conducted. The results revealed no statistically significant relationship between participation in professional development courses and teachers’ beliefs about mathematics. The findings suggest that teacher beliefs tend to remain relatively stable, even after attending professional development courses. Limitations include reliance on self-reported data and the difficulty of measuring implicit beliefs. Future research should explore longitudinal designs

    No full text
Background: Randomized trials have demonstrated the superiority of surgery over endoscopy in patients with symptomatic chronic pancreatitis. However, large international studies quantifying the impact of surgery on chronic pancreatitis are lacking. The aim of this study was to evaluate current practice across Europe regarding indications, surgical techniques, and outcomes of surgery for chronic pancreatitis. Methods: A prospective multicentre study of consecutive patients undergoing surgery for symptomatic chronic pancreatitis from 22 centres in 13 countries from 1 June 2021 to 30 November 2022 was conducted. The outcome of interest in patients with pain as an indication was the Izbicki pain score at 6-month follow-up, with complete pain relief defined as an Izbicki pain score ≤10 and partial pain relief defined as an Izbicki pain score >10, but with a >50% decrease compared with the baseline score. Quality of life was assessed using Pancreatitis Quality of Life Instrument (PANQOLI) and 12-Item Short-Form (SF-12) surveys. Predictors of pain relief were analysed using multivariable analysis. Results: Overall, 207 patients underwent surgery (24.6% underwent surgical drainage procedures, 29.5% underwent duodenum-preserving head resections, and 45.9% underwent formal pancreatic resections). Before surgery, 48.8% used opioids and 51.2% had undergone prior endoscopic treatment. Major morbidity occurred in 14.0% and the 90-day mortality rate was 1.4%. Among 113 patients operated on for pain, the median Izbicki pain score decreased from 61.3 to 19.0 at 6 months (P < 0.001). Pain relief was achieved in 72.6% (43 patients reported complete pain relief and 39 patients reported partial pain relief). PANQOLI and SF-12 Physical Component Summary scores improved significantly (P < 0.001). Longer symptom duration (OR 0.95 (95% c.i. 0.90 to 1.00), P = 0.045) and use of opioids before surgery (OR 3.16 (95% c.i. 1.04 to 9.64), P = 0.043) predicted less pain relief. Conclusion: Surgery for chronic pancreatitis across Europe was performed with low morbidity. Patients reported good pain relief and improvements in quality-of-life scores. Multidisciplinary consultation is recommended for all patients with chronic pancreatitis before undergoing any intervention.Peer reviewe

Tavoitteet. Tutkielman tavoitteena on tutustua luokanopettajien näkemyksiin ruokakasvatuksesta alakoulussa. Aineisto koostuu kuuden luokanopettajan puolistrukturoidusta teemahaastattelusta. Aims. The aim of the thesis is to explore class teachers' perspectives on food education in primary schools. The study delves into food education occurring both in school cafeterias and classrooms, considering the viewpoint of sustainable food transition in society. In this thesis, food education refers to all educational efforts aimed at developing children's and adolescents' knowledge and skills related to food and eating topics, such as food systems, food culture, dietary habits, and food choices. The thesis examines food education particularly from the perspective of climate and environment: to mitigate the consequences of climate change and ensure global and equitable food security, schools should, as institutions, prepare students for a more sustainable food culture through food education. Methods. The data consists of semi-structured thematic interviews with six primary school teachers. The data is focused on the teachers' views and experiences of food education in elementary schools and has been analyzed using a theory-bound phenomenographic method. Results and conclusions. The analysis highlighted several categories that describe the diverse perspectives of interviewees on food education in primary schools. The interviewed teachers associated food education in primary schools with school meals, goals that enhance students' health and well-being, and pedagogical solutions. Teachers considered the goals of sustainable food education important but approached them from different perspectives. The implementation of sustainable food education was challenged by unclear goals, attitudes, approaches, and limited materials. According to the results, the role of food education in schools should be clarified, considering the goals of sustainability education

    Evaluating the Need for Pre-CoMiSS™, a Parent-Specific Cow’s Milk-Related Symptom Score: A Qualitative Study

    No full text
Background/Objectives: Cow’s milk allergy (CMA) presents a significant clinical burden. The Cow’s Milk-related Symptom Score (CoMiSS™) is a widely used clinical screening tool designed to raise awareness of CMA among healthcare professionals. This qualitative study aimed to assess the need for a parent-reported CoMiSS™ tool (Pre-CoMiSS™) and explore its potential usefulness for parents and primary care physicians (PCPs). Methods: Participants were parents of infants aged 2–12 months and PCPs from Germany, Sweden, Spain, and the United Kingdom (UK) selected from a local panel of potential respondents. Interviews, conducted by experienced qualitative research moderators, consisted of pre-decided standardised questions. Thematic analysis was undertaken, and themes were derived from the data. Results: A total of 26 parent interviews and 18 primary care physician interviews were conducted. Parents from all countries found the Pre-CoMiSS™ tool helpful for understanding their baby’s signs, easy to use, and useful for facilitating consultation with the physician. Physicians in the UK, Spain, and Sweden found that the Pre-CoMiSS™ tool was helpful for improving symptom reporting and for medical consultations; however, in Germany, physicians had mixed opinions, expressing concerns that the tool might increase parental anxiety, lead to overdiagnosis of CMA, and add to their workload. Conclusions: A parent-specific tool for recording cow’s milk-related symptoms was generally well received by parents and most physicians, though concerns about parental anxiety and workload were noted, particularly in Germany. With further validation and refinement, Pre-CoMiSS™ may be a useful tool for parents to record their infant’s symptoms related to feeding and support PCPs in considering CMA in these infants

Financial toxicity and socioeconomic impact of cancer in Europe

    No full text
Background: Even with universal health care, patients living with cancer often face substantial treatment-related costs and income loss in Europe. Insights into the socioeconomic impact of cancer within and across countries are needed to create awareness, inform policy, and develop targeted measurement instruments. The SEC study aims to explore the socioeconomic impact and financial toxicity of cancer and identify vulnerable patient groups across Europe. Patients and methods: To investigate experiences of a large number of patients, data were collected in a collaborative effort of hospitals and patient organizations across Europe through convenience sampling. Patients undergoing treatment currently or treated within the past 2 years could participate. A 44-item survey was developed to measure the socioeconomic impact following a cancer diagnosis. The primary outcome was the level of financial toxicity, measured by the Financial Index of Toxicity (FIT) score. To identify vulnerable groups, multiple regression analyses were used to investigate the association between the FIT score, clinical characteristics, and socioeconomic demographics, including cancer type, employment status, and country of residence. Results: A total of 2507 patients across Europe met the inclusion criteria. Fifty-six percent of the patients reported income loss and 86% additional treatment-related expenses. Sixteen percent of patients delayed or avoided medical visits, buying medication, surgery, or other health services. Next to a significant association of the country of residence, our regression models demonstrated that divorced, self-employed patients who were younger (-0.02; P = 0.000) and lower educated (0.75; P = 0.000) with a lower household income (1.21; P = 0.000) and children (0.21; P = 0.000) at the time of diagnosis reported significantly higher FIT scores compared with older patients who were married (-0.56; P = 0.000), retired (-1.55; P = 0.000), or employed (-0.56; P = 0.000). Conclusions: In every European Union country, a substantial number of patients with cancer report serious financial consequences and stress. Further research is critical to inform well-tailored policies and interventions to limit the socioeconomic impact on patients with cancer.Peer reviewe

Subjective Cognitive Complaints in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury : Association with Cognitive Test Performance and Protective Psychological Factors

    No full text
Objective To examine subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) in patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), and to explore the associations between SCC, cognitive test performance and protective psychological factors.Method A sample of patients with mTBI (n = 99) or orthopedic injury (OI; n = 34) prospectively recruited and assessed 3 months post-injury. All participants underwent a neuropsychological test battery and completed self-report measures on SCC, psychological resilience, perceived social support, depressive symptoms, fatigue, and pain. Results 27.3% of the patients with mTBI and 17.6% of the OI controls endorsed at least some SCC. The two groups did not differ significantly in their SCC endorsement. Within the mTBI group, patients with and without SCC did not differ significantly in their cognitive test performance in majority of the cognitive domains examined. Patients with SCC reported lower psychological resilience (p = .005) and perceived social support (p = .009) than the non-SCC group. Conclusions This study provides support for the notion that SCC following mTBI are not consistently related to cognitive test performance deficits and further suggests SCC may associate with perceived social support and psychological resilience. These findings highlight the importance of considering psychological factors in the clinical assessment and intervention planning of patients presenting with SCC after mTBI.Peer reviewe
