Responsibility
DEFINITION OF THE TERM: It is a difficult task to define the term
“responsibility”. It can be understood as a moral value or as a legal
principle, and both concepts can result in different understandings of the
term. The issue of responsibility is topical in relation to contemporary
civilizational problems.
HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF THE TERM: The article discusses the
historical and cultural context in which moral responsibility became an
ethical concept of primary importance. It is argued that rejecting or not
taking moral responsibility has harmful social consequences.
DISCUSSION OF THE TERM: The issue of responsibility is discussed
from axiological, legal, and moral perspectives. Various ways of understanding this term are presented that are based on the concepts
of Polish and German philosophers who have studied the ethics
of responsibility.
SYSTEMATIC REFLECTION WITH CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The article discusses the links between philosophical
reflections on responsibility and Catholic Social Teaching, including
the teachings of Benedict XVI and Francis I. These papal teachings address the following contemporary philosophical concepts
of responsibility: 1) the sources of moral responsibility; 2) the difference between legal and moral responsibility; 3) the historical and
civilizational challenges that have led to changes in understandings
of the concept of responsibility. Pope Benedict XVI’s logic of gift and
Francis I’s integral ecology are both extensions of the philosophical

Bio-based nanofluids of extraordinary stability and enhanced thermal conductivity as sustainable green heat transfer media
Nanofluids (NFs) as a new generation of heat
transfer media can be applied inter alia as engine coolants, in the
microelectronic industry for the cooling of electronic components
and systems, and in solar panels. In the present study, the
extraordinarily, that is, more than 1 year, stable NFs composed of
multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), biomass-derived 1,2-
propanediol or 1,3-propanediol, and poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)
were created and studied. The thermal conductivity and density
of NFs did not change over 8 months, and NFs did not sediment
over 14 months. The real image of NFs determined using
transmission electron cryo-microscopy allowed us to prove that the
extraordinary stability and enhanced thermal conductivity were
resulted by fully individualized MWCNTs in the continuous phase
and MWCNTs stabilized in dispersions by shorter carbon nanoparticles and mostly homogenous poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) coating.
The maximum enhancement in thermal conductivity was 22 and 20% for NFs composed of 2 wt % MWCNTs in comparison with
that of pure 1,2-propanediol and 1,3-propanediol, respectively. The improved thermal properties were accompanied by the
practically Newtonian nature of all NFs. The cytotoxicity test on normal human dermal fibroblasts indicated that the use of diols
diminished the toxicity of MWCNTs. Finally, the thermal conductivity and Prandtl number of bio-based NFsas compared with
those of commercial heat transfer fluids DOWCAL 200 and DOWCAL Npredestine them as superb green heat transfer media in
sustainable energy systems
Effect of the alloying metal on the corrosion resistance of Pd-rich binary alloys with Pt, Rh, and Ru in sulfuric acid
The paper presents the study of the corrosion resistance of electrodeposited Pd and its binary
alloys with Pt, Rh, and Ru on a polycrystalline Au substrate. The corrosion resistance was tested
in 0.5 M sulfuric acid at room temperature using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical
impedance spectroscopy techniques. The morphology/composition and work function values were
determined by scanning electron microscopy/energy–dispersive X–ray spectroscopy and scanning
Kelvin probe, respectively. The obtained results revealed that the Pd electrode is the most resistant to
corrosion, whereas the Pd-Ru electrode is the most susceptible to dissolution. It was found that the
corrosion resistance of Pd-binary alloys decrease in the following order: Pd > Pd-Pt > Pd-Rh > Pd-Ru.
This effect was assigned mainly to the difference in surface roughness factor of tested electrodes
Does repeated dry sauna bathing change thermoregulation process in elite cross-country skiers?
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of a series of ten finnish dry sauna bathing on skin temperature following
exercise test for elite cross-country skiers and test, if the regular sauna baths induce any changes in physiological or haematological
parameters in elite athletes. Ten elite cross-country skiers (21.7 ± 3.1 years, height: 1.79 ± 0.025 m, body mass:
71.06 ± 4.77 kg) participated in this study. They performed two continuous exercise tests, before and after a series of ten sauna
baths. During experiment, the superficial temperature distributions, physiological and haematological parameters were measured.
The marked temperature drop was visible in upper body and smaller in lower part of body after exercise test. 10 min
after experimental exercise test slow return of the skin temperature to pre-workout values was observed in lower limbs unlike
upper part of body. Results of this study indicated that passive induced heat acclimation have a moderate, positive effect
(above 2%) on plasma volume and a small impact on physiological and temperature responses to exercise in elite athletes.
We conclude that ten finnish dry sauna baths can induce weak changes in the superficial temperature distributions following
exercise test, a certain decrease in resting heart rate and small increase in plasma volume in the elite cross-country skiers

Adaptation of phenol-degrading Pseudomonas putida KB3 to suboptimal growth condition: A focus on degradative rate, membrane properties and expression of xylE and cfaB genes
Detailed characterization of new Pseudomonas strains that degrade toxic pollutants is required and utterly
necessary before their potential use in environmental microbiology and biotechnology applications. Therefore,
phenol degradation by Pseudomonas putida KB3 under suboptimal temperatures, pH, and salinity was examined
in this study. Parallelly, adaptive mechanisms of bacteria to stressful growth conditions concerning changes in
cell membrane properties during phenol exposure as well as the expression level of genes encoding catechol 2,3-
dioxygenase (xylE) and cyclopropane fatty acid synthase (cfaB) were determined. It was found that high salinity
and the low temperature had the most significant effect on the growth of bacteria and the rate of phenol utilization.
Degradation of phenol (300 mg L 1) proceeded 12-fold and seven-fold longer at 10 ◦C and 5% NaCl
compared to the optimal conditions. The ability of bacteria to degrade phenol was coupled with a relatively high
activity of catechol 2,3-dioxygenase. The only factor that inhibited enzyme activity by approximately 80%
compared to the control sample was salinity. Fatty acid methyl ester (FAMEs) profiling, membrane permeability
measurements, and hydrophobicity tests indicated severe alterations in bacteria membrane properties during
phenol degradation in suboptimal growth conditions. The highest values of pH, salinity, and temperature led to a
decrease in membrane permeability. FAME analysis showed fatty acid saturation indices and cyclopropane fatty
acid participation at high temperature and salinity. Genetic data showed that suboptimal growth conditions
primarily resulted in down-regulation of xylE and cfaB gene expression
Statistical image analysis and escort histograms in characterization of articular cartilage repair in a skeleton animal model
Statistical image analysis of an ensemble of digital images of histological samples is performed as an auxiliary investigation a result of the recently proposed method of articular cartilage repair utilizing growth plate chondrocytes in a skeleton animal model. A fixed–shift model of maximal likelihood estimates of image histograms applied for monochromatic (grayscale) images or their RGB components confirms the statistically significant effect of the previously proposed medical treatment. The type of staining used to prepare images of
histological samples is related to the visibility of the effectiveness of medical treatment. Hellinger distance of escort distributions for maximal likelihood estimates of image histograms of medically treated and control samples is investigated to identify grayscale (or RGB) intensities responsible for statistically significant difference of the estimates. A difference of Shannon entropy quantifying informational content of the histograms allows one to identify staining and image colors which are most suitable to visualize cluster formation typical for articular cartilage repair processes

ZsoldosThis paper reports the first T2K measurement of the transverse kinematic imbalance in the single-πþ production channel of neutrino interactions. We measure the differential cross sections in the muon-neutrino charged-current interaction on hydrocarbon with a single πþ and at least one proton in the final state, at the ND280 off axis near detector of the T2K experiment. The extracted cross sections are compared to the predictions from different neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators. Overall, the results show a preference for models that have a more realistic treatment of nuclear medium effects including the initial nuclear state and final-state interactions

Scarce attention has so far been paid to the translation of religious songs in the academic writing. This article focuses
on the description of the translations of the Christmas song Mary, did you know into Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian. The
conducted analysis allowed to identify different types of translation shifts introduced by the translators in order to convey
both the content and the poetic form of the original
Stanisław Jerzy Lec’s Neologisms in Russian translations
The article discusses the methods of translating Stanisław Jerzy Lec’s Unkempt Thoughts into Russian in which neologisms
constitute the basis of the wordplay. There are a lot of language innovations in Lec’s aphorisms, but the article analyses
only one-word neologisms, mainly blend words. The study of the series of translations presents various translators’
choices, which often result from different ways of interpreting the original text by translators
