Distribution and ecology of two interesting diatom species Navicula flandriae Van de Vijver et Mertens and Planothidium nanum Bąk, Kryk et Halabowski in rivers of Southern Poland and their spring areas
In this paper, we report new records of rare diatoms that have recently been found in Southern Poland. Planothidium nanum was found only in the upper reaches of the Centuria River, which is not exposed to human influence, while Navicula flandriae was found in two rivers (the Bolina and the Mleczna) affected by salt mine water from hard coal mines. The impact of anthropogenic salinity on diatom communities is as yet
poorly documented. Therefore, we conducted a survey on this phenomenon. We surveyed seven sampling sites for diatom assemblages and habitat characteristics, including three sampling sites impacted by mine water. Navicula flandriae was recorded at both sampling sites affected by salt mine water and in two other rivers (the Centuria and the Mitręga), indicating its wide preference for salinity. We confirmed the occurrence of P. nanum at the same site where this species was found and described in our previous paper. In addition,
we recorded the occurrence of this species at two other sites in habitats with similar characteristics (lower reaches of the Centuria and Wiercica rivers). Our results indicate a more common occurrence of N. flandriae and P. nanum, which means that further monitoring of diatoms is necessary
Defining human-animal chimeras and hybrids: A comparison of legal systems and natural sciences
The article aims to present issues arising out of differences in the way that the terms chimera and hybrid are defined in legal systems and by natural sciences in the context of mixing human and animal DNA. The author analyses the different approaches to defining these terms used in various legal systems, dividing them into groups in light of conclusions reached from examining definitions used in natural sciences. The distinction is used to answer the question of which approach to definitions applied by legislators is the best way to handle the subject of humananimal organisms, given the need to balance their impact on medicine and the ethical concerns that arise
New star-shaped polyether-pentols (PEPOs) for fabrication of crosslinked Polyurethanes-synthesis and characterization
Polyether-pentols (PEPOs) were synthesized from glycidyl ethers and butylene oxide with the application of tripotassium salts of 2,2,6,6-tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)cyclohexanol (HMCH) activated 18C6 for ring-opening polymerization (ROP). The construction of the applied initiator system reflects the ability of crown ether to influence the degree of ion-pair separation with an increased activating effect. As a result formation of bi- or trimodal polymers was observed with molar masses in the range of (Mn = 1200–6000). The observed multi-fraction composition is prescribed to the formation of ionic aggregates with different reactivities during polymerization. The mechanism of the studied processes is discussed. The obtained PEPOs served for a crosslinked PUR synthesis, for which the hydrogen bond index for coupling of hard segments was calculated. Additionally, the range of phase separation was calculated that was higher for PUR-containing aromatic rings as the substituent

Travellers’ discourses thrive on anecdotes. According to Stephen Greenblatt, they interpose between a series of similar,
narrow experiences and a wider pattern they may indicate. This analysis deciphers how an anecdote from Passenger to
Teheran (1926), the travelogue written by Vita Sackville-West, is not just an isolated flash but can indicate larger representational
strategies. In her epic journey Vita Sackville-West travelled from London to Egypt, India, Persia, and then
back to England, through Russia, Poland and Prussia; by boat, train and car. In the episode which is subject to a detailed
analysis, the travellers were stopped at the Polish–East Prussian border and forced to leave the train. The consequences of
what could be just an anecdote about an “unwelcome incident”, reverberate – as it turns out – far beyond the incidental
because what is at stake at almost every border incident is a socio–political, geo–political, military and ideological reality.
No matter whether such events are presented as adventures or in all seriousness, each border trouble has consequences
beyond any “local moment”. To disclose some of the less obvious implications of the Polish–Prussian passage in Vita
Sackville-West’s book is the aim of this essay

The paper addresses the issue of discrimination against women in the world of cinema. The author examines the successive
stages of the struggle pursued by women of cinema for equality and fair treatment in an industry dominated and
ruled by men. The discussion covers the most important campaigns and movements challenging gender discrimination,
such as #MeToo in the U.S. or the European #nobodysdoll, as well as watershed events from the author’s point of view,
including the Oscar for Kathryn Bigelow – the first woman in history to receive the award for best director, Harvey Weinstein’s
conviction for sexual assault, and the leak of Sony’s confidential financial documents. The public disclosure of these
facts triggered a process that should be referred to as gender equalisation in the film industry. The author also takes a look
at the latest events in the industry, such as Agnieszka Holland’s election as president of the European Film Academy. In
addition, the paper also comments on the aspect of feminine nouns in Polish and the attitude towards them on the part
of the women they are supposed to describe. Information is provided on the U.S. and European cinema markets, as well as
some diagnoses of problems appearing so far and suggested solutions
Particle production properties at SPS energy range - recent results from the NA61/SHINE experiment
One of the main physics goals of the NA61/SHINE programme on
strong interactions is the study of the properties of the onset of deconfinement.
This goal is pursued by performing an energy- (beam momentum
13A–158A GeV/c) and system-size (p+p, p+Pb, Be+Be, Ar+Sc, Xe+La)
scan. In particular, recent inclusive spectra of identified hadrons in inelastic
p+p and centrality selected Be+Be and Ar+Sc interactions at the SPS
energies. The energy dependence of quantities inspired by the Statistical
Model of the Early Stage (kink, horn and step) are shown
John Henry Newman's Theory of Catholic Education
In this paper it will be explained that there is some ambiguity over how much
Newman's arguments for liberal education are actually grounded in more general theological
arguments about the distinctive nature of Catholic education. In what follows it will be argued
that Newman’s work is helpful in drowning attention to one of the central problems within the
theory of Catholic education, namely what ought to be the relationship between educational
and (Catholic) theology
Antifungal activity and biosynthetic potential of new streptomyces sp. MW-W600-10 strain isolated from coal mine water
Crop infections by fungi lead to severe losses in food production and pose risks for human
health. The increasing resistance of pathogens to fungicides has led to the higher usage of these
chemicals, which burdens the environment and highlights the need to find novel natural biocontrol
agents. Members of the genus Streptomyces are known to produce a plethora of bioactive compounds.
Recently, researchers have turned to extreme and previously unexplored niches in the search for new
strains with antimicrobial activities. One such niche are underground coal mine environments. We
isolated the new Streptomyces sp. MW-W600-10 strain from coal mine water samples collected at
665 m below ground level. We examined the antifungal activity of the strain against plant pathogens
Fusarium culmorum DSM62188 and Nigrospora oryzae roseF7. Furthermore, we analyzed the strain’s
biosynthetic potential with the antiSMASH tool. The strain showed inhibitory activity against
both fungi strains. Genome mining revealed that it has 39 BGCs, among which 13 did not show
similarity to those in databases. Additionally, we examined the activity of the Streptomyces sp. S-2
strain isolated from black soot against F. culmorum DSM62188. These results show that coal-related
strains could be a source of novel bioactive compounds. Future studies will elucidate their full
biotechnological potential
Beam characterization of a microfading tester: evaluation of several methods
Microfading testing allows to evaluate the sensitivity to light of a specific artwork. Characterization of the illumination
spot is important to determine its shape, dimensions, light distribution, and intensity in order to limit and account for
possible damage. In this research the advantages and disadvantages of several methods used to determine the beam
shape and intensity profiles are described with the aim of providing various options to microfading researchers interested
in characterizing their irradiation spots. Conventional and imaging methods were employed and are compared
in terms of their accuracy, cost, reliability, and technical features. Conventional methods consisted of an aperture technique
using aluminium foil and four different materials namely stainless steel, silicon, muscovite, and Teflon used as
sharp edges. The imaging methods consisted of digital photography of illumination spot, direct beam measurement
using a CMOS camera, and direct beam measurement using a laser beam profiler. The results show that both conventional
and imaging methods provide beam width measurements, which are in satisfactory agreement within experimental
error. The two best methods were direct measurement of the beam using a CMOS camera and sharp-edge
procedure. MFT illumination beam with a CMOS camera followed by a determination of the beam diameter using a
direct method, more specifically one involving a sharp-edge technique
Teacher development for immersion and content-based instruction
Searching for ways to expand the spectrum of methods of teaching and learning foreign languages triggers valuable initiatives and offers support for both students and teachers. Programs such as French immersion in Canada, content-based instruction (CBI), and content and language integrated learning (CLIL) have become popular across the world (Harrop, 2012), which is rapidly becoming a global village where the role of languages is crucial. In an integrated world, teaching content through language is viewed as a modern form of educational delivery; therefore, as the editors emphasize “teacher preparation and professional development endeavors are key drivers of successful I/B and CBI programs across a variety of models” (p. 3). Teacher Development for Immersion and Content-Based Instruction is a key contribution to the field, which offers valuable insights into the complexity of teacher preparation as well as further professional development in the case of immersion/bilingual contexts
