    Stochastic gene expression revisited

    We investigate the model of gene expression in the form of Iterated Function System (IFS), where the probability of choice of any iterated map depends on the state of the phase space. Random jump times of the process mark activation periods of the gene when pre-mRNA molecules are produced before mRNA and protein processing phases occur. The main idea is inspired by the continuous-time piecewise deterministic Markov process describing stochastic gene expression. We show that for our system there exists a unique invariant limit measure. We provide full probabilistic description of the process with a comparison of our results to those obtained for the model with continuous time

    Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na rolę i miejsce edukacji muzycznej w życiu i rozwoju uczniów klas I–III szkoły podstawowej. Autorka opisuje rozwój muzyczny dziecka w wieku wczesnoszkolnym, wymienia szereg funkcji wczesnej edukacji muzycznej oraz pięć form aktywności muzycznej, w których powinni regularnie uczestniczyć uczniowie. Ze względu na podjęty temat, autorka szczególnie zwraca uwagę na śpiewanie piosenek oraz związane z tym walory ogólnorozwojowe. Dalszą część artykułu stanowi refleksja na temat przemianach demograficznych i postępującego procesu starzenia się polskiego społeczeństwa. Odnosząc się do literatury przedmiotu, autorka zwraca uwagę na realizację w szkole ogólnokształcącej treści związanych z edukacją do starości. Podkreśla ona, że nauczyciele w szkole powinni na zajęciach stymulować prawidłowy, wszechstronny rozwój wychowanków, ukazywać pozytywne strony starzenia się i starości oraz kształtować postawy wobec seniorów. Jest to możliwe między innymi na zajęciach muzycznych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem śpiewu i piosenek. Dowodem tego jest przedstawiona analiza wybranych piosenek z repertuaru dziecięcego oraz występujących w nich treści związanych ze starością i osobami w podeszłym wieku

    Unusually high birch (Betula spp.) pollen concentrations in Poland in 2016 related to long-range transport (LRT) and the regional pollen occurrence

    In 2016, the highest birch (Betula spp.) pollen concentrations were recorded in Kraków (Poland) since the beginning of pollen observations in 1991. The aim of this study was to ascertain the reason for this phenomenon, taking the local sources of pollen in Poland and long-range transport (LRT) episodes associated with the pollen influx from other European countries into account. Three periods of higher pollen concentrations in Kraków in 2016 were investigated with the use of pollen data, phenological data, meteorological data and the HYSPLIT numerical model to calculate trajectories up to 4 days back (96 h) at the selected Polish sites. From 5 to 8 April, the birch pollen concentrations increased in Kraków up to 4000 Pollen/m3, although no full flowering of birch trees in the city was observed. The synoptic situation with air masses advection from the South as well as backward trajectories and the general birch pollen occurrence in Europe confirm that pollen was transported mainly from Serbia, Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, into Poland. The second analyzed period (13–14 April) was related largely to the local flowering of birches, while the third one in May (6-7 May) mostly resulted from the birch pollen transport from Fennoscandia and the Baltic countries. Unusual high pollen concentrations at the beginning of the pollen season can augment the symptomatic burden of birch pollen allergy sufferers and should be considered during therapy. Such incidents also affect the estimation of pollen seasons timing and severity

    Basaltic outcrops as centers of diversity for xerothermic plants in the Sudetes Mountains (Central Europe)

    Rock outcrops have promoted a high level of species diversity and provided a stable mi-croclimate for long time periods. The present study is devoted to plant diversity of natural Quater-nary outcrops of basaltic rocks. Chorological and ecological investigations were carried out at 35 such outcrops, located within five physiogeographic units of the Sudetes Mountains. The focus was on 120 xerothermic taxa of vascular plants: 62 strictly xerothermic (steppe) taxa of the Festuco valesi-acae-Brometea erecti class, and 58 thermophilous taxa representing classes Trifolio medii-Geranietea sanguinei and Quercetea pubescentis. Limited geographical ranges of these plants are manifested by variable frequency of their occurrence. Species distribution is determined by natural factors, like surface area of the outcrop, the type of basaltic rock and the type of plant communities developed. Basaltic outcrops in the Sudetes meet the criterion of habitat islands (inselbergs), serve as regional centers of vascular flora, and are refugia for marginal populations of relict species

    Assessment of periodontium temperature changes under orthodontic force by using objective and automatic classifier

    Background: Orthodontic elastics are used in orthodontic treatment with fixed braces. The effect of class I elastics on changing gingiva temperature as a periodontal component was investigated. Methods: To evaluate the temperature changes, objective and automatic classifiers were used to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the measurement. Results: Before putting on the elastics, the average gingival temperature of all 120 patients was 34.72 ± 0.7548 ◦ C. Putting on the elastics for 10 min slightly increased the temperature to 34.81 ± 0.5938 ◦ C; however, this is not a statistically significant change (p > 0.05). Conclusion: It is concluded that putting an elastic band on does not significantly affect the gingiva temperature change. The use of class I elastics in orthodontic treatment in patients with healthy periodontium does not significantly change the periodontal temperature, which indirectly proves the production of safe orthodontic forces that can be used in the clinic. The use of artificial intelligence in the assessment of the temperature of the gingiva makes it possible to exclude factors that may disturb the objective thermographic analysis

    Organic-to-aqueous phase transfer of alloyed AgInS2-ZnS nanocrystals using simple hydrophilic ligands : comparison of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid, dihydrolipoic acid and cysteine

    The exchange of primary hydrophobic ligands for hydrophilic ones was studied for two types of alloyed AgInS2-ZnS nanocrystals differing in composition and by consequence exhibiting two different emission colors: red (R) and green (G). Three simple hydrophilic ligands were tested, namely, 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid, dihydrolipoic acid and cysteine. In all cases, stable aqueous colloidal dispersions were obtained. Detailed characterization of the nanocrystal surface before and after the ligand exchange by NMR spectroscopy unequivocally showed that the exchange process was the most efficient in the case of dihydrolipoic acid, leading to the complete removal of the primary ligands with a relatively small photoluminescence quantum yield drop from 68% to 40% for nanocrystals of the R type and from 48% to 28% for the G ones

    Słownik obejmuje ok. 700 leksemów, które należą do grupy germanizmów uwzględnionych w wielu glosariuszach i słownikach współczesnego (regio)lektu śląskiego. Okazuje się, że duża liczba z nich jest nadal używana, jednak równie wiele już nie. Słownik sklada się z czterech części: pierwsza ma układ alfabetyczny, druga część jest uporządkowana według frekwencji.     Is there Urban Landscape in Metropolitan Areas? An Unobvious Answer Based on Corine Land Cover Analyses

    The recent increase in urban areas has stimulated landscape urbanization. One of the ways to study this process is an analysis based on the structure of land cover. The aim of this paper is to assess the intensity of the urban landscape on the basis of the CORINE in the seven largest metropolitan areas in Poland and in the Ruhr Metropolis in Germany. To this end, an urban landscape intensity indicator (ULII) was used based on Corine Land Cover at three levels of detail: the metropolitan area, municipalities and hexagons. There are similarities in landscape structure in areas with similar origin (industrial function) and spatial organization (mono- and polycentric agglomerations). The landscape of the Upper Silesia-Zagłębie Metropolis differs from the landscape of other metropolitan areas in Poland and simultaneously shows similarities to the landscape of the Ruhr Metropolis. The results of the ULII also revealed a dependency: the dominance of rural and transitional landscapes in a majority of the study areas. Urban landscapes occur only in the central zones of the metropolitan areas. This proves that determining the range of a metropolitan area in terms of landscape factors is different from doing it with formal or legal ones

    Correlation between isotherms and isodoses in breast cancer radiotherapy - first study

    The study is focused on correlation of isotherms derived from thermal images with an isodoses describing treatment plan for patients with breast cancer treated by radiotherapy. The irradiated area covered the part of the body after mastectomy. The study included patients diagnosed with breast cancer who were qualified for radiotherapy treatment. All patients were monitored during each treatment week during the entire radiotherapy process. The measurements were made under strictly defined conditions. In the treatment planning system (TPS), the specific plan was created for each patient. Spatial dose distribution in the patient’s body was obtained and presented by the isodoses (lines connecting points with the same dose values). The following areas from the treatment planning system were plotted on the thermograms: target (tumor area) and isodose: 45 Gy, 40 Gy, 30 Gy, 20 Gy and 10 Gy. The obtained results indicated a high correlation between magnitude of the dose represented as the isodose and the temperature of the treated skin. Moreover, preliminary analysis showed a repeatable increase of the mean temperature in the irradiated area during the treatment

    Post-landslide soil and vegetation recovery in a dry, montane system is slow and patchy

    Landslides are common disturbances in forests around the world, and a major threat to human life and property. Landslides are likely to become more common in many areas as storms intensify. Forest vegetation can improve hillslope stability via long, deep rooting across and through failure planes. In the U.S. Rocky Mountains, landslides are infrequent but widespread when they do occur. They are also extremely understudied, with little known about the basic vegetation recovery processes and rates of establishment which restabilize hills. This study presents the first evaluation of post-landslide vegetation recovery on forested landslides in the southern Rocky Mountains. Six years after a major landslide event, the surveyed sites have very little regeneration in initiation zones, even when controlling for soil coverage. Soils are shallower and less nitrogen rich in initiation zones as well. Rooting depth was similar between functional groups regardless of position on the slide, but deep-rooting trees are much less common in initiation zones. A lack of post-disturbance tree regeneration in these lower elevation, warm/dry settings, common across a variety of disturbance types, suggests that complete tree restabilization of these hillslopes is likely to be a slow or non-existent, especially as the climate warms. Replacement by grasses would protect against shallow instabilities but not the deeper mass movement events which threaten life and property
