The effect of petroleum-derived substances and their bioremediation on soil enzymatic activity and soil invertebrates
Petroleum-derived substances (PDSs) as main pollutants of the natural environment can
negatively affect the microbiological, biochemical, and biological properties of agricultural soils
and, consequently, plant production. The present study aimed to determine the after-effect of PDSs
such as petrol, used engine oil, and diesel fuel on the activity of selected soil enzymes (phosphatase,
dehydrogenase, and urease) and on the occurrence of soil invertebrates. Moreover, changes in the
analyzed parameters in response to bioremediation of the polluted soil by using ZB-01 preparation
were investigated. The field experiments were performed four- and five-years post contamination.
The results showed that even after five years, PDSs significantly modified the activity of soil enzymes;
however, this effect was often varied, depending on the pollutant, enzyme, and time after
soil contamination. Dehydrogenase seems to be a good indicator of soil contamination with PDSs,
particularly diesel fuel. Engine oil and diesel fuel limited still the occurrence of soil invertebrates,
particularly Collembola from the families Hypogastruidae, Isotomidae, and Entomobryidae, even after
four and five years of contamination. This finding suggests the usefulness of these organisms
in assessing soil pollution and in monitoring the progress of bioremediation. The effect of ZB-01
biopreparation on the activity of selected enzymes was varied. Its effect on the occurrence of soil
invertebrates was usually beneficial, which was evident in diesel fuel-contaminated soil
The role of intermolecular interactions in stabilizing the structure of the nematic twist-bend phase
The understanding of the relationship between molecular structure and the formation of the nematic twistbend
phase is still at an early stage of development. This is mainly related to molecular geometry, while the
correlation between the nematic twist-bend phase and the electronic structure is ambiguous. To explore
the electronic effect on properties and stabilization of the nematic twist-bend phase we investigated
20,30-difluoro-4,400-dipentyl-p-terphenyl dimers (DTC5Cn). We used polarized fourier transform infrared
spectroscopy, which can, at least in principle, provide information about the ordering in the twist-bend
phase. All dimers show a significant drop in the average value of the transition dipole moment for
parallel dipoles at the transition from the nematic to the twist-bend phase, and an increase for
perpendicular dipoles, despite remaining unchanged for the monomer. Density functional theory
calculations were used to determine the geometric and electronic properties of the hydrogen bonded
complexes. We have provided experimental and theoretical evidence of stabilization of the nematic
twist-bend phase by arrays of multiple hydrogen bonds (XF/HX, X–benzene ring)
Correlation between Microstructure and Magnetism in Ball-Milled SmCo5/α-Fe (5%wt. α-Fe) Nanocomposite Magnets
Magnetic nanocomposites SmCo5/ -Fe were synthesized mechanically by high-energy
ball milling (HEBM) from SmCo5 and 5%wt. of -Fe powders. The X-ray diffraction analysis reveals
the hexagonal 1:5 phase as the main one accompanied by the cubic -Fe phase and 2:17 rhombohedral
as the secondary phase. The content of each detected phase is modified throughout the synthesis
duration. A significant decrease in crystallite size with a simultaneous increase in lattice straining
is observed. A simultaneous gradual reduction in particle size is noted from the microstructural
analysis. Magnetic properties reveal non-linear modification of magnetic parameters associated with
the strength of the exchange coupling induced by various duration times of mechanical synthesis.
The highest value of the maximum energy product (BH)max at room temperature is estimated for
samples milled for 1 and 6 h. The intermediate mixed-valence state of Sm ions is confirmed by
electronic structure analysis. An increase in the Co magnetic moment versus the milling time is
evidenced based on the performed fitting of the Co3s core level lines

In this erratum, we clarify the details of the comparison of
mT spectra between p+p, Be+Be, and Pb+Pb. In the published
paper, the normalization of mT spectra was found
inconsistent in Fig. 14. It was checked that not all spectra
were normalized to the spectrum’s integral in the range
0.24 < mT − mπ
− < 0.72 given in the paper. In this erratum,
the ratios with correct normalization in the described
region are shown. The normalized Be+Be spectra were then
divided by the corresponding p+p and Pb+Pb spectra used as
a reference
Structural characterization of Al65Cu20Fe15 melt-spun alloy by X-ray, neutron diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy and Mössbauer spectroscopy
The aim of the work was to characterize the structure of Al65Cu20Fe15 alloy obtained
with the use of conventional casting and rapid solidification-melt-spinning technology. Based on
the literature data, the possibility of an icosahedral quasicrystalline phase forming in the Al-Cu-Fe
was verified. Structure analysis was performed based on the results of X-ray diffraction, neutron
diffraction, 57Fe Mössbauer and transmission electron microscopy. Studies using differential scanning
calorimetry were carried out to describe the crystallization mechanism. Additionally, electrochemical
tests were performed in order to characterize the influence of the structure and cooling rate on the
corrosion resistance. On the basis of the structural studies, the formation of a metastable icosahedral
phase and partial amorphous state of ribbon structure were demonstrated. The possibility of the
formation of icosahedral quasicrystalline phase I-AlCuFe together with the crystalline phases was
indicated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), neutron diffraction (ND) patterns, Mössbauer spectroscopy,
high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) observations and differential scanning
calorimetry (DSC) curves. The beneficial effect of the application of rapid solidification on the
corrosive properties was also confirmed
Deflationist Caprice : "Imperfections" in the Sculpture of Leon Podsiadły
This article is an attempt to define the ambiguous specificity of artistic deflation in the
sculpture of the Wroclavian artist Leon Podsiadły. At the outset, the author describes the principle of
deflationist art and proposes a method of approach. She then discusses the “imperfections” within
Podsiadły’s sculpture, the main manifestations of which include the use of common materials and
mundane objects, secondary anti-mastery, and dememorization. These features coexist with wellthought-
out composition, the inventiveness of the choice-making artist, and the creative fascination
of unconventional artistic qualities, to which deflationist unlearning adds a unique slant. Seen from
this perspective, Podsiadły’s deflationist caprice persuasively affirms the elasticity of the oscillation
between the optics of modernism and postmodernism that defines his art. This oscillation can be
seen, for instance, in those among his sculptures that were inspired by his stay in Africa in 1960s;
in his “erotic” compositions; and in his installations of the 2010s in which he used the ready made.
His “reductive” artistic experiments testify to a need for ironic distance; they individually gravitate
toward the transgressive avant-garde and at the same time respond to the current trend of deskilling
in art
Intergenerational transmission of resistance of Callosobruchus maculatus to essential oil treatment
Due to the rise of numerous legal restrictions as well as the increasing emergence of resistant
populations, the number of available pesticides is decreasing significantly. One of the potential
alternatives often described in the literature are essential oils (EOs). However, there is a lack
of research addressing the potential emergence of resistance to this group of substances. In this
paper, we investigated the multi-generational effects of sublethal concentrations of rosemary oil
(Rosmarinus officinalis) on physiological and biochemical parameters of the cowpea weevil (Callosobruchus
maculatus) such as egg laying, hatchability, oxygen consumption and acetylcholinesterase
activity. Imago, which as larvae were exposed to EO at concentrations equivalent to LC25, showed
significantly lower mortality. The results obtained indicate the potential development of resistance
in insects exposed to EO in concentrations corresponding to LC25. In addition, in the case of the
group treated with an EO concentration corresponding to LC3.12, a stimulation effect of the
above-mentioned parameters was observed, which may indicate the occurrence of a hormesis effect.
The obtained results may be an important reference for the development of future guidelines
and EO-based insecticides
Intercultural Competence and Pragmatic Error
This paper discusses two topics which are very popular nowadays among the academics dealing with
foreign language teaching, namely: intercultural competence and pragmatic error. The author notes the
fact that those two notions appear separately, because the starting points for discussing them are usually
different fields of science. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate that on one hand the two notions need to
be treated uniformly, and on the other, that the pragmatic error should be included in error classifications
which are references for both the authors of handbooks as well as people educating future teachers. For
that purpose, the author defines intercultural competence, presents various approaches to error and its classification
in teaching, and then explains what pragmatic error is and describes its linguistic characteristics

i wynikające z nich niepokoje w różnych częściach świata na

możliwości edukacji, pracy, opieki medycznej i godnego miejsca do
mieszkania żyją bez nadziei na poprawę egzystencji. Narastająca frustracja
prowadzi do agresji, łamania prawa, brutalnej przemocy oraz zamieszek
i walk ulicznych. Celem artykułu jest namysł nad problematyką podejmowaną
w filmowych dyskursach i próba znalezienia odpowiedzi na pytania
o przyczyny i czynniki wywołujące społeczne niepokoje. Do analizy
badanej problematyki została wykorzystana kategoria godności ludzkiej
