Genetic diversity of Salix lapponum populations in Central Europe
Salix lapponum is a cold-tolerant relict species in Europe that occurs in several sites, probably reflecting
previous migration routes of S. lapponum during the Pleistocene. However, only a few data are available
on the genetic structures of populations of S. lapponum. In this study, we use PCR-ISSR markers to
investigate genetic variation in 19 European populations of S. lapponum L. AMOVA analysis shows that
most of the variation (55.8%) occurs within populations; variability among groups accounts for 19.7%.
An AMOVA analysis based on four groups determined by STRUCTURE analysis shows similar results:
variability of 54.1% within the population and variability of 18.9% between the four population groups,
based on geographic regions. Within individual geographic groups, which are characterised by the studied
populations, the lowest variability (as well as the highest homogeneity) was found in populations located
in Belarus. The obtained results are consistent with our expectations that the European Lowland could
be a significant geographic barrier for gene flow over large geographic distances for S. lapponum. Both
the Scandinavian and Belarusian populations, as well as those coming from NE Poland, are characterised
by significant genetic distinctiveness. However, some populations from NE Poland and the Sudetes
show similarities with populations from other geographic regions, indicating existing genetic relationships
between them. Moreover, the results suggest a fairly clear division of the population into 4 emerging geographic
regions, although separated by a geographical barrier: the Polish lowland, which forms part of the
larger geographic unit known as the European Lowland
Methodology of Modern Research Concerning Childhood - the Perspective of Childhood Studies
Modern research concerning childhood has been developing mostly based on the concept of children’s rights, which is seen not only in the topics of research but also in the objectives and methodological aspects. The aim of the paper is to show how respecting children’s subjectivity and their right to voice opinions in matters that affect them are reflected in childhood studies by means of the specific epistemological perspective, which is seeing the reality through children’s eyes, and the preference for some methodological solutions, i.e. the types of research and the applied methods that are useful in obtaining reports, opinions and assessment of children. The analysis of scientific and research discourse allowed identification of several preferred methodological types of childhood studies, i.e. ethnographic, meta-analytical using big data, survey and longitudinal research. It also allowed indication of the current which is developed in research on childhood and is related to promotion of participatory research with children
Semantic-syntactic models of predicates in Stanisław Karolak’s conception of semantic-based grammar – some problems and solutions
The author examines semantic-syntactic models of predicates according to Stanislaw Karolak’s
conception of semantic-based grammar. From the list of first-order bivalent predicates provided by
S. Karolak, the author analyses some of them from the point of view of the number and quality of
the implied argument positions. During the analysis it often turns out that more than one model
refers to one form of predicate (one signifiant). This phenomenon is due to the polysemous nature of
words in natural language and, therefore, to the ambiguity of uses of predicates in different contexts
(more than one signifié). In order to determine the number and type of arguments semantically
implied by a given predicate, the author applies the test of negation, contraposition, and paraphrase
leading to a semantic decomposition and emphasises the role of the metaphor and metonymy in
their interpretation
The National Security Council (Rada Bezpieczeństwa Narodowego) - an advisory organ to the President of Poland?
Poland’s National Security Council (Rada Bezpieczeństwa Narodowego, RBN)
is defined in the country’s Constitution as organ doradczy Prezydenta Rzeczypospolitej
Polskiej w zakresie wewnętrznego i zewnętrznego bezpieczeństwa państwa (officially
translating into: “the advisory organ to the President of the Republic regarding
internal and external security of the State”). Against that background, this article
uses analysis of policy practice as it seeks to explain whether the NSC truly plays
that role of advisory organ, or is more in the nature of a coordinating-and-consulting
body. To address this research topic, three areas have been identified for broader
and deeper consideration, i.e. the means of selecting Council Members, the frequency
with which Sittings have been convened, and the subject matter addressed at those
Sittings
Programy samodoskonalenia w poradnikach wydanych na ziemiach polskich w latach 1864-1914
The dissertation is devoted to the concepts that appeared in the popular handbooks during the great socio-economic transformations of the second half of the 19th century. The analyzed source material concerns various aspects of everyday life: health and hygiene, work and finances, shaping one's own character, education and interpersonal relations. Source material contains both works by native authors and foreign translations, with particular emphasis on books by Samuel Smiles.
An essential aspect of this literature is the idea of self-improvement:. the assumption that success in life can be achieved by one's own efforts. The self-improvement programs, proposed by the authors, were analyzed both in terms of the authors' individual concepts as well as their complementarity and consistency in relation to each other. Another important aspect of the work is the discussion of the extent to which the counseling of the era responded to the need for guidance from the new middle class and groups aspiring to it.
In addition to the analysis of guidance programs, the work discusses the specificity of the guide as a source material, its place on the book market of the era and the publishing models in which this type of literature has functioned. Selected profiles of the authors of the guides were also presented
Echoes of Medieval and Pre-Modern Animal Trials in the Interlude Declamatio sub forma iudicii (1735)
Declamatio sub forma judicii can be found in the Graudenz Codex (1731–1740). It is
an interlude that jokingly reports an animal trial. The interlude is a humorous treatment of the
historical trials on animals that continued from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century. On
the one hand, such eighteenth-century discussions of animal trials continued the medieval tradition.
This would confirm the diagnosis about the existence of the “long Middle Ages”, especially
in Central and Eastern Europe, where the cultural trends could be somehow belated in comparison
to those in the West. On the other hand, perhaps writing about animal trials in the eighteenth
century was already a form of medievalism. High culture propagated anthropocentrism in its
thinking about animals, while folk culture entailed anthropomorphism. In animal trials animals
are treated as subjects to the same regulations as humans, which means that they were seen as
very much similar to humans. The eighteenth-century interlude recreates this tradition, but it is
a source of satirical laughter
Editorial : new approaches in forensic analytical chemistry
Some place their faith in forensic science to the degree that they are under the impression that it is absolute, infallible and unassailable. In truth it is a manmade construct, dependent on manmade machinery, man-calibrated accuracy, man-led action under manmade protocols and analyzed by man – an altogether human construct (American Academy of Forensic Sciences cited in Pyrek, 2007). People have always strived to discover and understand the world, and the scientific quest to provide explanations fuels technological progress. This drive has fuelled forensic chemistry, where information is obtained through the examination of various evidentialmaterials to assist the justice systempiece together stories of the past. Concurrently, the validity and reliability of the information provided by forensic experts, its ability to discriminate between the standpoints of defense and prosecution, is being questioned and challenged as never before (Pyrek, 2007; Fraser andWilliams, 2009)(...
Przyczynek do rozmieszczenia pluskwiaków różnoskrzydłych (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) w Polsce - III
[A contribution to the distribution of true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) in Poland – III]. This paper is a continuation of a series of publications on the distribution of true bugs in Poland and includes new faunistic data for 306 species of true bugs. In total, data on 62 species previously unreported in 21 zoogeographical regions of Poland is presented, including some rarely collected: Brachyarthrum limitatum, Eurydema fieberi, Peritrechus gracilicornis, Stephanitis pyri, Tingis crispata. It is also noteworthy that this paper was largely prepared using citizen science, where many people (non-specialists in Heteroptera) collected data constituting almost 25% of the presented records. Importantly, the true bugs recorded in this way include species very rarely collected in Poland, and species alien to Polish fauna (e.g. Oxycarenus lavaterae, Nezara viridula and Halyomorpha halys). Due to the lack of funding being a significant obstacle to biodiversity studies in Poland, citizen science seems to be the only way to effectively monitor all the dynamic changes taking place in national entomofauna
Mining clinical pathways for daily insulin therapy of diabetic children
We propose a decision support framework (DSF) assisting insulin therapy of diabetic children. Our DSF relies on a medical
treatment graph (MTG), which models and graphically represents clinical pathways. Using the MTG, it is possible to
plan and adapt medical decisions dependent upon the current health state of a patient and the progress of the treatment.
Our MTG fits well with the requirements of clinical practice. The presented work is a cooperative effort of researchers in
computer science and medicine. The MTG model has been thoroughly tested and validated using real-world clinical data.
The usefulness of the approach has been confirmed by physicians
