Cities and their symbols. Legal conditions for marketing use of the appearance of famous monuments
The subject of this article is the legal ramifications of the commercial use of well-known landmarks by the cities where
they are located. In fact, cities have played such a role and benefited commercially for many years, e.g. the Eiffel Tower in Paris or Tower Castle in London. Such a practice appears obvious but should be based on the local legal provisions in force and resulting limitations. After a detailed analysis of the law of property and copyright, the author argues that the owner of the landmark has not only an exclusive right to make physical use of it, but also the right to dispose of its image. In particular, these rights include the commercial use of this image in both possible forms, whether looking at the monument directly or enjoying it by looking at its photographs. Taking into account this legal position, a city can freely use its marketing images of its own landmarks, but in the case of third party owned monument, it will be necessary to sign a special agreement setting out the conditions of such use. Independently of property rights, a city will be obliged to also accept the rights of authors of projects referred to as “new monuments” as well as the rights of the authors of projects involving conservation, restauration, adaptation and modernization works. These rights include economic rights and authorship of the given works (moral rights). In case of reconstructions and copies, such obligations refer only to the executors of the works
Człowiek w przestrzeni publicznej miasta : społeczne znaczenia i zjawiska zagrażające przestrzeni publicznej
The article deals with the problem of the functioning of urban public space. The first part of the text focuses on six social meanings of public spaces: functional, interactive, civic, axiological, symbolic and identical. Their presentation adopts a cultural perspective related to the process of experiencing space by its users. The empirical context for the analysis is research projects on urban public spaces carried out in Polish cities in the second decade of the 21st century. The second part of the article analyzes the threats to the functioning of urban public spaces. The following processes are referenced in this context modernization risks, a sense of security, privatization of space, touristification, and the growing importance of information technologies in social relations processes. The article ends with conclusions indicating the increased importance of green areas for city dwellers, the restoration of civic meanings of urban spaces, and the introduction of sustainable solutions in the created public spaces. It is also emphasized that suitable public spaces attract users of urban spaces enabling them to carry out optional activities
The process of deterioration of liberal democracy in the Visegrad Group countries : institutional perspective
Contemporary changes of liberal democracy affect different countries of the
world. The Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, known as the Visegrad Group
countries (V4), are among them. Although the countries seemed to be on a good way to
consolidated democracy, about a decade ago the first symptoms of deterioration of liberal
democracy became apparent. In the text, attention is focused on the institutional level,
which should resist certain challenges in mature democracies. The institutions in V4 were
weak and liable to be subordinated by strong political leaders and populist parties, and not
strong enough to fight off illiberal tendencies. The analysis reveals that Poland and Hungary
were more prone to compromise liberal democratic achievements, while the Czech
Republic and Slovakia less so. This paper answers the questions of the institutional causes
behind the deterioration of liberal democracy and the effects it brings
Contamination and consumption in Christina Rossetti’s Goblin Market: a food studies perspective
The aim of this article is to analyse the work of the English poet Christina Rossetti from the perspective of Victorian gender
norms directed at girls. In her poem “Goblin Market” Rossetti describes sisters Laura and Lizzie, whose idyllic existence is
disturbed by the arrival of sinister goblin fruit sellers. While Lizzie maintains proper restraint, Laura greedily devours the
juicy fruits, for which she is punished – she loses strength and sinks into apathy. She is saved only by the sacrifice of her
sister, who risks her life to purchase more delicacies and feed them to the weakened Laura. The sisters’ fantastic adventures
have been interpreted in various ways, from a story of sin and salvation, to one of food poisoning to an allegory of the
creative process. All these approaches, however, see the eating of sweet fruit as a form of transgression as a result of which
Laura is banished from the idyllic self-sufficiency of their small farm, where the girls are not troubled by any sorrows.
However, having learned the sweet taste of the fruit, Laura does not want to milk cows, feed hens and bake cakes without
a word of complaint. Using the framework of food studies enriched with the tools of conceptual metaphor theory, the
article argues that the contamination Laura suffers through forbidden consumption is not presented by Rossetti as unambiguously
negative. This interpretation also becomes bolstered by comparing Rossetti’s piece with how other Victorian
female writers defined the role of young women in relation to food, including especially the aspect of their apprenticeship
to be housewives. In this view, the goblin fruit gains a new dimension: its consumption highlights the oppressive nature
of the norms to which young women were subjected in the Victorian era
porównanie wpływu dwóch rodzajów bodźca (transkrypcji tekstu wyjściowego i nagrania tekstu

Around the Slovak Translations of Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz’s Lato w Nohant
Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz’s drama Lato w Nohant was translated to Slovak
twice: first time, before the war, but that translation ultimately did not receive acclaim
and fell into oblivion; and then again in the 1970s, during the so-called normalisation of
what was at the time Czechoslovakia. In this historical context, this translation would be
considered socialist realist. However, the translation of Iwaszkiewicz’s text defends itself
from such a classification
European Agenda on Migration Towards Vulnerable Persons
The purpose of the paper is to analyse the European Agenda on Migration from the perspective of people who, for some reason, are susceptible to harm or have found themselves in a challenging situation (i.e. are “vulnerable”), and answer the question of whether the Agenda has taken notice of this issue in any way.
The analysis proceeds in five parts. It begins by outlining the complexity of vulnerability with particular emphasis on the role of the adopted perspective and the situation of migrants. Next, it describes the EAM objectives in terms of vulnerable persons. On the basis of several communications, proposals, working documents and reports that the EU has formulated since May 2015, the Agenda’s theoretical assumptions have been compared with their implementation in practice. Part four attempts to answer whether the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the situation of vulnerable migrants has been reflected in EU operational documents. The final part presents the New Pact on Migration and Asylum
(as the latest achievement in the discussed area) with particular attention paid to vulnerable persons.
The research was based predominantly on official EU documents, binding and non-binding, and the latest literature on the subject
Pamięć zbiorowa Sybiraków-emigrantów do Ameryki Północnej w świetle narracji autobiograficznych
This dissertation addresses the issue of collective memory of so-called “Sybirak-emigrants” in light of autobiographical narratives. The term “Sybirak-emigrant” used in this thesis refers to prisoners or people deported to the territory of the Soviet Union between 1939 and 1941, who after the end of World War II decided to emigrate permanently to the United States. The main sources used in this study were biographical interviews recorded in audio or audio-video technology that were found in Polish and American oral history archives.
The main theme of the whole research process undertaken in this thesis was an attempt to answer the question: "What forms did collective memory take in the examined group of 'Sybirak-emigrants'"? The author wanted to investigate which events from the years 1939-1942 they remembered were particularly important to them, and to find an answer to the question "why"? He also wanted to find out which of the issues and topics they mentioned belonged to the most frequent, and which characterized only individual accounts. The purpose of this analysis was not to hold the interviewees accountable for the consistency of their experience or consciousness with historical truth. The author of this study was primarily interested in examining how they remembered their past, how they wanted to portray it, and what factors influenced or could influence this or that image of the past. In the research undertaken, he also set out to look at what particular images of the past were characteristic of the identified generations and which events from their past were given most attention by each group of interlocutors. Finally, one of the important issues analysed in this study remained the question of the representation of social roles and emotions presented in the memories of the interviewees, related to their perception of the events of 1939-1941
The predictors of adaptive and maladaptive coping behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic: The Protection Motivation Theory and the Big Five personality traits
The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive value of the constructs proposed by two influential theoretical frameworks: the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) and the Big Five (B5) model of personality in predicting health-related coping behavior during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Both adaptive (i.e., preventive) and maladaptive (i.e., avoidant behavior and wishful thinking) coping behavior was measured. The study was conducted during the first wave of the pandemic. The sample consisted of 397 persons from the general Polish population. The findings provided strong support for the PMT constructs’ predictive value, especially with regard to pandemic-related adaptive behavior. The B5 personality traits accounted for a small proportion of the variability of coping behavior, especially when maladaptive behavior was the outcome. The PMT model showed incremental validity over and above demographic variables and personality traits in predicting preventive behavior, avoidant behavior, and wishful thinking; however, the patterns of relationships differ across the types of coping behavior. According to the current results, to increase adherence to preventive measures during an epidemic, all the PMT constructs should be considered while persuasive communication to the public is formulated
