Modification of physicochemical properties and bioactivity of oxide coatings formed on Ti substrates via plasma electrolytic oxidation in crystalline and amorphous calcium phosphate particle suspensions
One way to improve characteristics of oxide coatings prepared by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method in
suspensions lies in variation of solid particle properties. In this study, the effect of particle crystallinity on
different physicochemical properties and bioactivity of coatings prepared on Ti and Ti6Al4V substrates was
studied, and repeatability of resulting characteristics was assessed depending on selected substrates. PEO was
performed in direct current mode at a voltage of 350 V in electrolytes containing 0.1 M KH2PO4 and 100 g.L-1 of
stoichiometric crystalline hydroxyapatite or amorphous tricalcium phosphate particles with average size of ~
450 nm. Series of measured physical parameters included coating thickness, as well as surface wettability,
roughness and topography. Surface and cross-sectional chemical composition was studied by Raman and EDX
spectroscopy, while bioactivity was evaluated with simulated body fluid tests. Results showed specific influence
of particle crystallinity on surface morphology and repeatable particle incorporation pattern depending on the
substrate utilized. It was found that amorphous particles lead to the increased amount of incorporated calcium
phosphate phases followed by improved coating bioactivity and possible explanation of this phenomenon was
suggested. Variation of particle crystallinity was proposed as a new potential instrument for the adjustment of
PEO coating properties
Involvement in Sexaholics Anonymous and life satisfaction: The mediating role of meaning in life and hope
Background and aims: Some people are preoccupied with their sexual urges and fantasies and lose
control over their sexual behaviors, which can cause adverse consequences for their health and wellbeing.
One of the options available for individuals seeking treatment for compulsive sexual behavior
disorder (CSBD) is a self-help group based on the twelve-step program. The main purpose of the
current study was to examine the direct and indirect (through meaning in life and hope) relationships
between involvement in Sexaholics Anonymous (SA) and life satisfaction. Methods: The sample consisted
of 80 Polish members of SA (72 men and 8 women) with a mean age of 38.96 years (SD 5 10.56).
The Sex Addiction Screening Test-Revised, the Meaning of Life Questionnaire, the Herth Hope Index,
the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and items adapted from the Alcoholics Anonymous Involvement Scale
were used to measure the study variables. Results: Path analysis showed a direct positive relationship
between SA involvement and life satisfaction. Moreover, the relationship between these variables was
mediated by the presence of meaning in life and hope. Simultaneously, more severe symptoms of CSBD
were related to lower levels of the presence of meaning in life and higher levels of the search for meaning
in life, which, in turn, predicted lower levels of life satisfaction. Discussion and conclusions: The results
suggest that finding meaning in life and restoring hope partly underlie the relationship between SA
involvement and life satisfaction

Resting Frequency of Echolocation Calls within a Lesser Horseshoe Bat Population (Southern Poland) and its Relation to Body Size, Condition and Mass
The echolocation calls emitted by stationary bats are characterised by their resting frequency (RF). The ecological role of RF has been widely discussed across the literature concerning the Rhinolophidae family, where it has been found that the RF may vary depending on many factors, although its role in shaping the variability of different populations remains unclear, and the data for many species – including Rhinolophus hipposideros – is scarce. In this study, we aimed to determine how sex, age and biometric parameters (body mass, forearm length and the body condition index) affected the RF in a R. hipposideros population and to investigate the individual variability in this parameter. Bats were captured in front of two Carpathian caves in Southern Poland during the mating season. The echolocation calls of the hand-held bats were recorded, and later their peak frequency was measured with computer software. The analyses showed higher RF values for females than for males, but (in contrast to previous reports) no differences between the age classes were identified. RF did not correlate with any biometric parameters in the studied population, which rules out the possibility of quality characteristic signalling through this parameter. However, we observed significant individual differences in RF within the sex-age groups, which might reflect some communication potential. The discrepancies among the research results available for this topic indicate the need for further studies aimed at investigating the variability of RF and its role across species distribution ranges and their phenology
Machos out, softies not in! The Changing Image of Male Stereotypical Role Models in the Distorting Mirror of Irony and Humour
This article attempts to present stereotypes regarding men on the basis of selected contemporary
humorous (ironic) texts. The concept of stereotypes as being a set of connotative
features identifying objects and phenomena within a community’s cultural and
linguistic definition and their role in the perception and processing of information, is a
starting point for the discussion. The following section presents the essence of humour and
irony and the techniques they employ. The empirical section of the paper deals with a
variety of formally analysed texts in terms of their subject-matter and the manner in which
men are profiled in the selected humorous texts is discussed. The resulting observations
and reflections provide a basis for further research into connotation in humorous texts,
including irony and stereotypes, as well as in gender analysis
Zastosowanie chromatografii cienkowarstwowej do analizy wybranych pigmentów roślinnych
The doctoral dissertation is divided into two parts: theoretical and experimental. In the
theoretical part, primary and secondary plant metabolites are discussed and individual groups
of phytochemical compounds are characterized. The following chapters are devoted to the
compounds from the group of anthocyanins, betacyanins and neolignans. The experimental
part includes descriptions of the research and analyses carried out using thin-layer
chromatography (TLC and HPTLC methods), scanning densitometry, UV-Vis
spectrophotometry and mass spectrometry (TLC-MS). The aim of the study was to develop
new conditions for the chromatographic separation of compounds, as well as to apply the
method for their qualitative and quantitative determination. The first stage is focused on the
analysis of selected anthocyanins: cyanin, keracyanin, delphinidin and pelargonidin.
In addition, a method of triple chromatographic development for the separation
of anthocyanins was carried out. The tested compounds were determined in food samples.
The next stage of research focuses on betacyanins, including betanin. Horizontal separation
of betacyanin pigments was observed during the chromatographic analysis, which
is a "fingerprint" of those compounds. The last part of the experimental concerns compounds
from the group of neolignans: magnolol and honokiol, which were determined in samples
of dietary supplements, and their antioxidant and antibacterial properties were examined
An evaluation on potential anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of Crocin
Crocin, an active ingredient derived from saffron, is one of the herbal components that has recently been
considered by researchers. Crocin has been shown to have many anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties,
and therefore can be used to treat various diseases. It has been shown that Crocin has a positive effect on the
prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and kidney disease. In addition, the role of this substance in COVID-19 pandemic has been identified. In this review article, we tried to have a comprehensive review of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of Crocin in different diseases and different tissues. In conclusion, Crocin may be helpful in pathological conditions that are associated with inflammation and oxidative stress
Self-protective approaches to the translation of monolingual normative acts and their result
Translating monolithic normative acts is a common
practice. Nevertheless, in the literature, it is not easy to find more
extensive statements by the authors of such translations on the
translation approach they used. This attitude results from the
generally approved principle of maximum fidelity to the source
text, which is guaranteed by a literal or source-like translation.
This approach has many advantages. One of them is the selfprotective
function. In the opinion of many translators, the
accusation of translation infidelity cannot be formulated in the
case of literal translation, in which the connection with the legal
culture of the source language is evident. In this sense, literal
translation is preservative and cautious, as it protects the
translator against the accusation of not being faithful to the
original text. Moreover, it relieves the translator of the
responsibility of understanding the translation, places lower
competency requirements on translators, and does not require
comparative tests. In spite of these advantages, preservative
approaches to text translation are not free from serious
disadvantages. They are often incoherent and incomprehensible.
Such translations suggest the existence of the so-called nonequivalent
terminology. Therefore, translations that are faithful to
the original text and unfaithful in reception may constitute a
serious legal threat to their addressees
Terapia tradycyjna a terapia strategiczna dyslalii obwodowej
The author proposes a typology of methods for treating dyslalia, taking into account various
criteria. The Evidence-Based Practice formula (loosely translated as „evidence-based practice”) is
a specific background for the considerations. In this context, the author compares the methods of
traditional therapy and strategic therapy. The analyzes show that these are two different models of
therapy, although some common threads can be found, e.g. work on the automation of the practiced
sound in the patient’s everyday speech. It is worth noting that the author identifies the strategic
therapy with the Strategic method of improving the implementation of SMURF phonemes
An awkward contaminant : are mercury concentrations in historically collected fossils a result of storage conditions?
High concentrations of mercury (Hg), reaching astonishing values in two cases, have recently been detected
in Middle and Late Triassic fossil reptile bones, housed for over 100 years in several Polish museum collections. Since no correlation between either the life modes of these taxa or their burial environment was observed, the studied contaminations seem to be associated with housing conditions. The specimens were kept for an extended amount of time in boxes, in which they were stored soon after finding. A proximity of mercury-containing materials, like mercury fulminate, and unstandardized conditions of storage and conservation of the remains may result in contamination of porous bone with mercury. A detailed knowledge about the housing history of old museum collections has great importance to their prospective studies
