Pytania o wartość. Ekonomiczne uwikłania jednostki i języka w Wyznaniach Jeana-Jacques’a Rousseau
This article discusses the multiple ways in which the Confessions by Jean-Jacques Rousseau evokes finances, income, loss, and the worth of money itself. Born in the lower class, Rousseau vividly portrays the struggles caused by the 18th-century economy, which became one of the most important topics in his oeuvre. He treats money with intense ambivalence, accusing it of having a delinquent effect on society and each human being, while longing for a steady income with no need for work. On the other hand, he depicts money not as a measure of worth but as an empty sign that can be seen as a metaphor for the conventional nature of language. These observations pose questions how societies form their notion of worth and value
To what extent naringenin binding and membrane depolarization shape mitoBK channel gating—A machine learning approach
The large conductance voltage- and Ca2+-activated K+ channels from the inner mitochondrial
membrane (mitoBK) are modulated by a number of factors. Among them flavanones,
including naringenin (Nar), arise as a promising group of mitoBK channel regulators from a
pharmacological point of view. It is well known that in the presence of Nar the open state
probability (pop) of mitoBK channels significantly increases. Nevertheless, the molecular
mechanism of the mitoBK-Nar interactions remains still unrevealed. It is also not known
whether the effects of naringenin administration on conformational dynamics can resemble
those which are exerted by the other channel-activating stimuli. In aim to answer this question,
we examine whether the dwell-time series of mitoBK channels which were obtained at
different voltages and Nar concentrations (yet allowing to reach comparable pops) are discernible
by means of artificial intelligence methods, including k-NN and shapelet learning.
The obtained results suggest that the structural complexity of the gating dynamics is shaped
both by the interaction of channel gate with the voltage sensor (VSD) and the Nar-binding
site. For a majority of data one can observe stimulus-specific patterns of channel gating.
Shapelet algorithm allows to obtain better prediction accuracy in most cases. Probably,
because it takes into account the complexity of local features of a given signal. About 30%
of the analyzed time series do not sufficiently differ to unambiguously distinguish them from
each other, which can be interpreted in terms of the existence of the common features of
mitoBK channel gating regardless of the type of activating stimulus. There exist long-range
mutual interactions between VSD and the Nar-coordination site that are responsible for
higher levels of Nar-activation (Δpop) at deeply depolarized membranes. These intra-sensor
interactions are anticipated to have an allosteric nature
Comparative actualistic study hints at origins of alleged Miocene “coprolites” of Poland : [raw image slice data]
Raw image slice dataExcrement-shaped siderite masseshave been the subject of much controversy. They have been variously interpreted either as being coprolites, cololithes or pseudofossils created by mechanical deformation of plastic sediment. Here we reportexcrement-shaped ferruginous masses recovered from the Miocene of Turów mine in south-western Poland.
Results of mineralogical, geochemical, petrographic and microtomographical analyses indicate that these masses consist of siderite and iron oxide rather than phosphate, and rarely contain recognizable food residues, which may suggest abiotic origins of these structures. On the other hand, evidence in support of a fecal origin include: (i) the presence of two distinct morphotypes differing in size and shape, (ii) the limited quantity of specimens, (iii) the presence of rare hair-like structures or coalified inclusions and (iv) the presence of rare fine striations on the surface. Importantly, comparative actualistic study of Recent vertebrate feces shows overall resemblance of the first morphotype (sausage-shaped with rare coalified debris) to excrements of testudinoid turtles (Testudinoidea), whose shell fragment was found in the investigated locality. The second morphotype (rounded to oval-shaped with hair-like structures), in turn, is similar to the feces of some snakes (Serpentes), the remains of which were noted in the Miocene of the neighborhood areas.National Science Centre, Poland (www.ncn.gov.pl), 2019/32/C/NZ4/0015
Un incendio invisible de Sara Mesa como una crítica implícita al «Homo consumericus»
The paper is an attempt at shedding light on the issues related to the dystopian vision of postmodern society metonymically represented by Vado, an imaginary city, in the novel Un incendio invisible written by Sara Mesa. This abandoned urban space causes us to reflect on crucial topics in postmodern society, such as incorporation into unknown place, redefinition of the concept of parenthood, liquid and perverse love, social inequalities, abandoned elders, consumption, role of shopping malls and their significance, human alienation, all phenomena that we find in the novel. The city of Vado plays symbolic role in that piece, hence its devastation and ruin show a close connection with the consumer society and the actions of Homo consumericus. We base our analysis on the philosophical and sociological postulates of Gilles Lipovetsky, Zygmunt Bauman, Erich Fromm and anthropological one of Marc Augé, as well as on the proposal of how to read a novel by Javier del Prado Biezma in order to describe the nature of all these mentioned problems and expose the criticism of Homo consumericus concealed in the novel

High-throughput sequencing data revealed genotype-specific changes evoked by heat stress in crown tissue of barley sdw1 near-isogenic lines
Background: High temperature shock is becoming increasingly common in our climate, affecting plant growth and
productivity. The ability of a plant to survive stress is a complex phenomenon. One of the essential tissues for plant
performance under various environmental stimuli is the crown. However, the molecular characterization of this region
remains poorly investigated. Gibberellins play a fundamental role in whole-plant stature formation. This study identified
plant stature modifications and crown-specific transcriptome re-modeling in gibberellin-deficient barley sdw1.a
(BW827) and sdw1.d (BW828) mutants exposed to increased temperature.
Results: The deletion around the sdw1 gene in BW827 was found to encompass at least 13 genes with primarily
regulatory functions. A bigger genetic polymorphism of BW828 than of BW827 in relation to wild type was revealed.
Transcriptome-wide sequencing (RNA-seq) revealed several differentially expressed genes involved in gibberellin
metabolism and heat response located outside of introgression regions. It was found that HvGA20ox4, a paralogue of
the HvGA20ox2 gene, was upregulated in BW828 relative to other genotypes, which manifested as basal internode
elongation. The transcriptome response to elevated temperature differed in the crown of sdw1.a and sdw1.d mutants;
it was most contrasting for HvHsf genes upregulated under elevated temperature in BW828, whereas those specific to
BW827 were downregulated. In-depth examination of sdw1 mutants revealed also some differences in their phenotypes
and physiology.
Conclusions: We concluded that despite the studied sdw1 mutants being genetically related, their heat response
seemed to be genotype-specific and observed differences resulted from genetic background diversity rather than
single gene mutation, multiple gene deletion, or allele-specific expression of the HvGA20ox2 gene. Differences in the
expressional reaction of genes to heat in different sdw1 mutants, found to be independent of the polymorphism,
could be further explained by in-depth studies of the regulatory factors acting in the studied system. Our findings are
particularly important in genetic research area since molecular response of crown tissue has been marginally investigated,
and can be useful for wide genetic research of crops since barley has become a model plant for them
Political beliefs and the acceptance of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic restrictions. The case of Poland
We investigated the relationships between political beliefs regarding two aspects of the
right-left distinction (cultural and economic) and the acceptance of the pandemic restrictions
using variable-centred and person-centred approaches. The community sample consisted
of 305 participants. Four groups of the restrictions were considered. Religious fundamentalism
predicted positively the acceptance of the restrictions associated with the limitations of
labour rights and those limiting civil rights without a direct impact on safety. Anti-welfare negatively
predicted the acceptance of the restrictions regarding social distancing and those
limiting civil rights and increasing safety. These associations were discussed in relation to
basic needs and values which motivate persons who endorse right-wing or left-wing political
views. The latent profile analysis revealed three profiles of political beliefs, which were
termed “Conservative Statists,” “Liberal Laissez-fairists,” and “Conservative Laissez-fairists.”
The profiles differed in terms of acceptance of the pandemic restrictions, and the patterns
of these relationships were different for particular groups of restrictions
Air Democracy: on the Principles of Breathing Together
In her prominent work The Forgetting of Air in Martin Heidegger, Luce Irigaray
writes:
Is not air the whole of our habitation as mortals? Is there a dwelling more vast,
more spacious, or even more generally peaceful than that of air? Can man live
elsewhere than in air? […] No other element is as light, as free, and as much in
the “fundamental” mode of a permanent, available, “there is.” (Irigaray, 1999:
p. 8).
Adding a couple of pages further:
Air would be the arch-mediation: of the logos, of thinking, of the world –
whether physical or psychical. Air would be the substance of the copula that
would permit the gathering-together [le rassemblement] and the arrangement
of the whole into the life and Being of man, and permit his habitation in space
as a mortal. But this archē-ness would never be able to be constituted as an
origin because of its mediating qualities and because it is a permanent necessity
for the immediate subsistence of man. (p. 12) [...]
Gaston Bachelard, the “non-psychoanalyst”
The relationship between Gaston Bachelard’s philosophy and psychoanalysis
can be described as changeable, even turbulent. The common points and ruptures,
the departures and returns, the criticisms and reformulations of the source-concepts
linked to the ambiguous attitude that Bachelard had towards psychoanalysis
overlapped the changes already inscribed in his philosophy. We must add the
importance of the diversification of theoretical and methodological proposals that
arose in the psychoanalytical movement in the broad sense [...]
Synthesis and Structural Characterization of a New 1,2,3-Triazole Derivative of Pentacyclic Triterpene
The new 30-substituted triazole derivative of 3,28-O,O0-diacetylbetulin was obtained in
the copper(I) catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). The title compound was characterized
by NMR, IR, HR-MS, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The X-ray diffraction study showed that the
1,2,3-triazole derivative crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P212121, Z = 4, and unit cell
parameters are as follows a = 9.4860(10) Å, b = 13.9440(2) Å, and c = 30.2347(4) Å. The molecular
packing is stabilized by intermolecular hydrogen interactions C-H . . . O. The Hirshfeld surface
analysis showed the presence of the O . . . H interactions with a percentage of the 16.5% in the total
Hirshfeld area. The MEP analysis showed that the nucleophilic regions are located near the oxygen
atoms of the acyl and carbonyl groups of betulin moiety and the sulfur atom in the triazole linker.
The HOMO and LUMO orbitals are located near the triazole moiety. The obtained results indicated
that this new betulin derivative is more reactive with electrophilic than nucleophilic molecules
