    Invariant vector means and complementability of Banach spaces in their second duals

    Let X be a Banach space. Fix a torsion-free commutative and cancellative semigroup S whose torsion-free rank is the same as the density of X∗∗. We then show that X is complemented in X∗∗ if and only if there exists an invariant mean M:ℓ∞(S,X)→X.     Generative note taking, being one of the strategies applied to manage difficult texts, requires not only comprehension and selection of information but also production. The current study focuses on note taking formats for a text read with the intention to summarize. Its focal aim is to improve both practical and theoretical understanding of this activity. It involves the investigation into note taking behaviors of 103 second-year English Department students, how they, as readers of FL, engage with complex texts, how they were instructed in note taking and what note taking strategies they employ for comprehending academic texts. The analysis of the collected data attempts to identify how readers’ (n = 103) translanguaging and transmedia (n = 103) note taking formats help increase their engagement in and access to difficult texts in L2. It shows that the subjects have not transitioned from the paper interface to the digital one, since they still display the screen inferiority effect in their reading habits. The collected data shows that only some subjects (n = 42/103) received some form of instruction in paper note taking techniques or digital applications facilitating note taking. The students were not able to enumerate more than four note taking applications which would be conducive to their formation of a coherent interpretation of the digital text they read. The author contends that overt note taking instruction in both paper and digital mode will create avenues for encouraging, interacting and engaging in reading. Instruction in that field needs to be modified with regard to digital note taking/annotating tools to make use of the note taking formats available for processing digitally interfaced texts

    "Pandemia COVID-19, podobnie jak inne ekstremalne sytuacje, obnażyła słabości i mentalne problemy, z którymi zmagają się pojedynczy ludzie i społeczności. Obiektywnym wskaźnikiem jest poziom wyszczepienia społeczeństwa Polski (zaledwie 50 procent), niski jak na kraj europejski i regionalnie znacząco zróżnicowany – z najgorzej wypadającą historyczną Galicją i ścianą wschodnią. Wiążą się z tym antynaukowe i aspołeczne postawy i zachowania wyrażające się niewiarą w pandemię, nieprzestrzeganiem zasad higieny publicznej i ruchami antyszczepionkowymi. Jak każda skrajna sytuacja pandemia ujawniła też postawy amoralne. Bulwersują przypadki agresji wobec osób zwracających uwagę na przestrzeganie zasad higieny epidemicznej. Trudno pojąć zapał atakujących punkty szczepień. Kryminalną patologią jest hejt i grożenie śmiercią lekarzom propagującym i wykonującym szczepienia. Zjawisko ma szerszy wymiar w odniesieniu do wielu wyzwań – globalnego ocieplenia, energetyki węglowej, budowy spalarni śmieci, tworzenia ośrodków dla chorych na AIDS, kontroli urodzin i edukacji seksualnej, migracji, organizmów modyfikowanych genetycznie (GMO) i wielu innych.     Application of the HYSPLIT model for birch pollen modelling in Poland

    In this work, the HYSPLIT model was used to reproduce birch pollen concentrations in Poland for the years 2015 and 2016, where there was significant variation in terms of pollen concentrations and start/end dates of the pollen season. The analysis of pollen observations showed that the seasonal pollen integral (SPIn) was low in 2015 with a shorter season compared to 2016. In 2016, SPIn was unusually high. The HYSPLIT model simulation, with a one-hour temporal resolution, was conducted during the birch pollen season (from March to May) for 2015 and 2016. Meteorological data were obtained from the WRF model. The birch coverage map of the European Forest Institute was used. The emission, introduced to the model, covered Central Europe with a resolution of 0.3° × 0.3°. The results were compared to data from 11 observation stations in Poland. The measured birch pollen concentrations for 2015 were overestimated by HYSPLIT at 8 of the 11 stations (normalized mean bias/NMB from 0.13 to 2.53) and underestimated for three stations (NMB from − 0.44 to − 0.15). For 2016, the model highly underestimated the pollen concentrations, with NMB ranging from − 0.45 to − 0.93. In general, the results show that the model can resolve the main peaks of pollen concentrations, which is a step forward in the application of the HYSPLIT model for birch pollen forecasting over Poland. We suggest the application of methods that can reduce the bias of temperature such as meteorological data assimilation or bias correction, which could improve calculation of the start of emissions and consequently the start of the pollen season as well as pollen concentrations

    Vis and NIR Diffuse Reflectance Study in Disordered Bismuth Manganate - Lead Titanate Ceramics

    This work shows a correlation between light reflectance, absorption, and morphologies of series of bismuth manganate–lead titanate, (1 x) BM–x PT, (x = 0.00, 0.02, 0.04, 0.08, 0.12, 0.16, 0.24, 1.00) ceramics composite. Low reflectance in the Vis-NIR range corresponds to ‘black mirror’ features. The modified Kubelka-Munk function applied to measured visible-near infrared (Vis-NIR) diffuse reflectance enabled the estimation of the energy gaps magnitude of the order of 1.0–1.2 eV for BM-PT. Histograms of grains, obtained using a scanning electron microscope, enabled finding the correlation between grains size, reflectance magnitude, and PT content. The magnitude of energy gaps was attributed to electronic structure bands modified by crystal lattice disorder and oxygen vacancies

    The growing emission of carbon dioxide (CO2), combined with its ecotoxicity, is the reason for the intensification of research on the new technology of CO2 management. Currently, it is believed that it is not possible to eliminate whole CO2 emissions. However, a sustainable balance sheet is possible. The solution is technologies that use carbon dioxide as a raw material. Many of these methods are based on CO2 methanation, for example, projects such as Power-to-Gas, production of fuels, or polymers.     Philosophy of values in leadership coaching: leader in selected types of leadership

    Purpose: The focus of this article is on the axiology of leadership, which is a description of the guiding values and characteristics of a leader, including innovation, growth, skilful direction-setting, listening and attentiveness, proactive empowerment, accountability, judgment, and persuasion. Design/methodology/approach: The article uses the method of comparative-descriptive analysis. In this article, I characterize the different types of leadership including its strategic, activating, operational and forcing form. Findings: I refer to the scientific theory of authorities in the field of organizational management and leadership coaching by Owen, Krupp, Schoemaker, as well as Kaplan and Kaiser; for comparison, I also include Sieraczkiewicz’s leadership typology. Unconsciously, however, the leader’s qualities/attributes, when abused, can become the greatest obstacle and disadvantage, which not only thwarts all the efforts of the team, but also makes the leader-head of that team ineffective. Research limitations/implications: The text takes up issues related to the problem of development and self-development in the field of business. Practical implications: The paper concerns the development of an individual, leader and his team in the professional and private sphere. Text will be interest broadly understood business. Social implications: Unconsciously, however, the leader’s qualities/attributes, when abused, can become the greatest obstacle and disadvantage, which not only thwarts all the efforts of the team, but also makes the leader-head of that team ineffective. Originality/value: Originality of the article is confirmed by the description of basic features/values that every contemporary leader should cultivate. Characteristic feature of the contemporary leader is his versatility and the related axiological pluralis

    Production and Characterization of the Third-Generation Oxide Nanotubes on Ti-13Zr-13Nb Alloy

    In the group of vanadium-free titanium alloys used for applications for long-term implants, the Ti-13Zr-13Nb alloy has recently been proposed. The production of a porous layer of oxide nanotubes (ONTs) with a wide range of geometries and lengths on the Ti-13Zr-13Nb alloy surface can increase its osteoinductive properties and enable intelligent drug delivery. This work concerns developing a method of electrochemical modification of the Ti-13Zr-13Nb alloy surface to obtain third-generation ONTs. The effect of the anodizing voltage on the microstructure and thickness of the obtained oxide layers was conducted in 1 M C2H6O2 + 4 wt% NH4F electrolyte in the voltage range 5–35 V for 120 min at room temperature. The obtained third-generation ONTs were characterized using SEM, EDS, SKP, and 2D roughness profiles methods. The preliminary assessment of corrosion resistance carried out in accelerated corrosion tests in the artificial atmosphere showed the high quality of the newly developed ONTs and the slight influence of neutral salt spray on their micromechanical properties
