CEL NAUKOWY: Celem naukowym artykułu jest wskazanie inspiracji ignacjańskich wykorzystywanych w radzeniu sobie ze zmienną rzeczywistością w tzw. VUCA World. PROCES WYWODU: Wywód otwiera objaśnienie konceptu i definicji VUCA World. Zalety przewodnictwa opartego o myśl i działania Loyoli doceniają zarówno zwolennicy pedagogii ignacjańskiej, jak i liderzy wielkich firm biznesowych i organizacji non-profit. Coraz częściej rekomendują je i menedżerowie, i uznani teologowie

Molecular and Cytogenetic Analysis of rDNA Evolution in Crepis Sensu Lato

    Get PDF
Although Crepis was the first model plant group in which chromosomal changes were considered to play an important role in speciation, their chromosome structure and evolution have been barely investigated using molecular cytogenetic methods. The aim of the study was to provide a better understanding of the patterns and directions of Crepis chromosome evolution, using comparative analyses of rDNA loci number and localisation. The chromosome base number and chromosomal organisation of 5S and 35S rDNA loci were analysed in the phylogenetic background for 39 species of Crepis, which represent the evolutionary lineages of Crepis sensu stricto and Lagoseris, including Lapsana communis. The phylogenetic relationships among all the species were inferred from nrITS and newly obtained 5S rDNA NTS sequences. Despite high variations in rDNA loci chromosomal organisation, most species had a chromosome with both rDNA loci within the same (usually short) chromosomal arm. The comparative analyses revealed several independent rDNA loci number gains and loci repositioning that accompanied diversification and speciation in Crepis. Some of the changes in rDNA loci patterns were reconstructed for the same evolutionary lineages as descending dysploidy

The rapid decrease of biodiversity studies in well-researched areas – the case of Poland

    Get PDF
Loss of biodiversity is one of the most urgent issues for humankind. Therefore, lots of research try to win the race for diversity recognition before it’s lost studying the biodiversity hotspots. The problem rises in some well-studied parts of the world, where due to the nonchalant scientific policy of governments, biodiversity science seems to be far behind the ongoing change in ecosystems. The case of Poland (Central Europe) serves as an example of long term, erroneous policy leading to the constant fall of diversity-related branches of science

The mid-al ti tude moun tain mas sif of Mali me Gropa is lo cated in the cen tral part of Al ba nia, rises to an al ti tude of 1500–1800 m a.s.l., is com posed mostly of Me so zoic lime stone, and is char ac ter ized by ex ten sive sur face karst de vel op ment. The karst re lief is dom i nated by “doline” mor phol ogy in clud ing “po lyg o nal” karst. De tailed geomorphological anal y sis of the west ern part of the Mali me Gropa mas sif (so-called West ern Mas sif) by means of GIS meth ods is used to de ter mine and ex plain the morphometric and mor pho log i cal di ver sity of the area’s to pog ra phy. Based on a ho mo ge ne ity cri te rion, a num ber of geomorphological units with spe cific kinds of karst re lief have been dis tin guished within the mas sif. The dif fer ences in karst sculp ture con cern the size (di am e ter) of dolines and de pres sions, their depth, shape and sym me try, ori en ta tion, den sity of oc cur rence and spa tial pat tern, which pro vide the ba sis for dis tin guish ing geomorphological units. The spa tial dif fer en ti a tion of the karst re lief is ex plained by the in flu ence of fac tors which are evo lu tion ary (geo log i cal and geomorphological evo lu tion of the mas sif), hypsometric (al ti tude dif fer ence of ter rains) and geomorphologic-struc tural (in cli na tion of the slopes and lay -ers). The rel a tively poor ex pres sion of open karst con duits (i.e. caves and ver ti cal shafts) on the sur face of the mas sif may re -sult from the rel a tive im ma tu rity of the epikarst zone, the wide spread oc cur rence of re sid ual cover on the pla teau, and the ac cu mu la tion of large amounts of clay ma te rial in dolines and de pres sions. De tailed hydrogeological stud ies show, how ever, high karst per me abil ity and dom i nance of con duit flow. Con sid er ing the high geomorphological land scape and eco log i cal value of the area, it should be granted the sta tus of a na ture re serve or na tional park. Geomorphological and karstological re -search within the mas sif should be con tin ued as it rep re sents a type of karst found also in other parts of Al ba nia. This type of karst area is of great eco nomic (ground wa ter re serves) and nat u ral pro tec tion (en vi ron men tal) im por tance

Investigation of Modified Auxetic Structures from Rigid Rotating Squares

    Get PDF
Auxetic structures exhibit unusual changes in size, expanding laterally upon stretching instead of contracting. This paper presents this effect in a failsafe mode in structures made of rigid squares. We applied the concept of auxetic structures made of rigid rotating squares (from Grima and Evans) and offer a novel solution for connecting them. By introducing axes of rotation on the surface of the squares, a reliable working system is obtained, free from stress, in which the squares can come into contact with each other and completely cover the surface of the structure, or, in the open position, form regularly arranged pores. Herein, we present a new 2D auxetic metamaterial that is mathematically generated based on a theoretical relationship of the angle between the edges of a square and the position of the axis of rotation. Physical models were generated in the form of a planar structure and in the form of a circular closed structure. Such physical models confirmed our initial considerations and the geometrical relationships, offering new application possibilities. The novel structure that was designed and manufactured for the purpose of the paper can be considered as a new proposal in the market of auxetic materials

Field Evaluation of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungal Colonization in Miscanthus × giganteus and Seed-Based Miscanthus Hybrids Grown in Heavy-Metal-Polluted Areas

    Get PDF
Understanding the behavior of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) associated with plants is essential for optimizing plant cultivation to the phytoremediation of degraded soils. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the differences in AMF root colonization between novel seed-based interspecific Miscanthus hybrids (M. sacchariflorus x M. sinensis) and the standard M. x giganteus when grown in soils contaminated with heavy metals (Pb, Cd, and Zn). During the third and fourth growing seasons, higher concentration of metals in the roots and a limited transfer of metals from the roots to the shoots were observed in all the plants studied. After the third growing season, the lowest values of AMF colonization rates were observed for the GNT34 hybrid. After the fourth growing season, AMF colonization decreased, which could be due to the drought that occurred during that season. GNT34 showed a lower tendency to develop mycorrhizal structures on heavymetal (HM)-contaminated soils than GNT41 and M x g; however, this hybrid was insensitive to changes in colonization rates during the dry growing season

Supramolecular Structure of Phenyl Derivatives of Butanol Isomers

    Get PDF
Wide-angle X-ray scattering patterns were recorded for a series of aliphatic butanol isomers (n-, iso-, sec-, tert-butanol) and their phenyl derivatives (4-phenyl-1-butanol, 2-methyl-3- phenyl-1-propanol, 4-phenyl-2-butanol, and 2-methyl-1-phenyl-2- propanol, respectively) to determine their atomic-scale structure with particular emphasis on the formation of supramolecular clusters. In addition, molecular dynamics simulations were carried out and yielded good agreement with experimental data. The combination of experimental and theoretical results allowed clarification of the origin of the pre-peak appearing at low scattering angles for the aliphatic butanols and its absence for their phenyl counterparts. It was demonstrated that the location of the hydroxyl group in the molecule of alkyl butanol, its geometry, and rigidity determine the morphology of the supramolecular clusters, while the addition of the aromatic moiety causes more disordered organization of molecules. The phenyl group significantly decreases the number of hydrogen bonds and size of the supramolecular clusters formed via the O−H···O scheme. The lower association ability of phenyl alcohols via H-bonds is additionally attenuated by the appearance of competing π−π configurations evidenced by the structural models

Protection of Polish critical infrastructure (CI) against air threats

    Get PDF
The goal of this paper is to analyse challenges related to protecting Polish critical infrastructure (CI) against air threats, such as UAVs, as a case study in a wider discussion on protection of critical infrastructure worldwide. The Polish legal definition of critical infrastructure and laws regarding the protection of such facilities are explained in the article in order to provide context. A review of scientific literature and open-source analysis of known air attacks on CI and the capabilities of air platforms are also included, with special attention being paid to unmanned systems. The threats themselves have been divided into two groups of scenarios: peacetime threats and crisis situations that have hybrid wartime scenarios. Depending on the scenario, the different capabilities of actors must be taken into account. Peacetime air threats include the use of commercially available drones. Those devices have limited capabilities, in terms of weaponisation, due to the limited weight of their cargo and the flight range. More advanced devices, including custom–built drones and military systems, can be supplied and used by state actors. Therefore, there are different requirements regarding protection systems. In peacetime, anti-drone systems are certainly recommended due to their capabilities and safety of use for bystanders. In more dangerous scenarios, typical military systems, including Very Short-Range Air Defence, Short-Range Air Defence and Medium Range Air Defence systems have to be employed or dedicated kinetic counter-drone systems deployed
