Capstone Project submitted to the Department of Engineering, Ashesi University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, May 2022Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) is the practice of lowering voltages to the lower limit of the acceptable voltage range while keeping it in the voltage range. CVR is considered globally as part of the energy savings program. The journey to save energy in power systems has led to the exploration of Volt/Var optimizers and voltage optimization including CVR implementation. CVR is implemented because of the problems that come with operating close to the upper limit of the acceptable voltage range such as mass of wasted energy as well as higher than necessary electrical bills and reduced lifespan of equipment. The problems that come from operating at a voltage level close to the upper limit affects both consumers and distributors. This capstone project showed that implementing conservation voltage reduction in an 11kV/400V distribution network will provide some level of energy savings to both the consumer and utility distributor. In this project, PSCAD is used for designing the schematic for both the control and CVR models of the 11kV/400V distribution network. The control schematic being the original distribution network layout available and the CVR schematic being the distribution network layout with the CVR implementation using load tap changers and capacitor banks. MATLAB/Simulink was used to model both the control and CVR models with real time parameters either calculated or referenced from the Electricity Company of Ghana. The simulation results for the CVR model managed to maintain the voltage within the range of 220-230V under conditions such as overvoltage and undervoltage. Undergraduate thesis submitted to the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, Ashesi University, in partial fulfillment of Bachelor of Science degree in Management Information Systems, May 2022Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease usually found in tropical areas such as Africa, South American and Asia, and the current annual global estimate for dengue-related cases has risen from $8.9 billion and will only keep rising from here. Given the lack of information and a predictive model for finding out the number of cases within a specific geographical location. This paper aims to develop a model for predicting dengue fever based on the climate conditions of a specific location. This is done using dengue fever data and climate data from Peru to train and test our prediction model. We perform exploratory data analysis on our model to see the relationships between the various variables and how they affect prediction capabilities. This paper explores the impact of climate change and vegetation indices on the spread of dengue. Analysis on the climate variables such as temperature, dew point, precipitation and rainfall as well as vegetation indices from the north, south, east and west of both San Juan and Iquitos. The project uses time series plot to predict the number of future cases and uses a series of descriptive plots to explain the correlation between climate, vegetation and the number of cases. The final model with the best error rate had a Mean Absolute Error of ).071 and was the combination of Principal Component Analysis and the Light Gradient Boosting model. The final analysis showed that only climate variables had an impact on the prediction of the disease.Ashesi Universit

Undergraduate thesis submitted to the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, Ashesi University, in partial fulfillment of Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, May 2022The emergence of infectious diseases that threatened the lives of living organisms brought about the introduction of vaccines. Vaccines and vaccinations are a way of curbing pandemics and saving the lives of millions of organisms worldwide that may have lost their lives to infectious diseases. The principle of vaccination is to prevent living organisms from further acquiring infectious diseases. However, the introduction of vaccinations to control pandemics birthed misconceptions even though infectious diseases were killing millions of people. Thus, the term "vaccine hesitancy" was birthed. This research answers the question, can we predict the likelihood of vaccine hesitancy based on people's background information? This will be done using machine learning models such as LASSO regression, Artificial Neural Network, Extreme Gradient Boosting Machine, and the Gradient Boosting Machine to predict the vaccine hesitancy. The data for this research contains 36 predictors, including h1n1_concern, h1n1_knowlwdge, education, sex, age, rage, marital status, etc., and two target variables, namely h1n1_vaccine and seasonal_vaccine. This research shows that, indeed, the vaccine hesitancy of people can be predicted based on their background information. The LASSO regression model used to experiment with this hypothesis predicted that out of the 26,708 data of respondents used, 20,149 respondents did not take the H1N1 vaccine, and 2425 respondents took the vaccine, with an accuracy of 84.25%.Ashesi Universit

Applied project submitted to the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, Ashesi University, in partial fulfillment of Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, May 2022Various tools have been developed to digitally analyse, visualise, and store data however not all data exists digitally. While there are many benefits to digital systems, there are many reasons while the progress into developing such systems is delayed especially in the African context. The longer an organization collects data without digitally storing it, the more data needs to be manually recorded into the digital system once implementation is possible. In order to assist in the transition, this project proposes a system to scan physical documents, with a focus on forms, into compiled digital datasets. This is done using Optical Character recognition.Ashesi Universit

Undergraduate thesis submitted to the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, Ashesi University, in partial fulfillment of Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, May 2022As children grow, they learn how to read and write. Reading involves recognizing, distinguishing, and understanding words and characters to make sense of a text. By the age of 7, a child should read and understand simple texts. For some people, it is not the case. They struggle to read and write. Reading is fundamental as it is applied everywhere; for instance, a person needs to read road signs to know their current location, read the operating manual for a new device they have bought, and many others. Some people struggle to read and write because of a learning disability called Dyslexia. It makes them unable to identify words and make sense of them. Some people can overcome Dyslexia by third grade, but others struggle even in university. Students are struggling to keep up academically because of this learning disability. This Thesis undertakes research to identify what students with Dyslexia go through and what strategies work best to help them study effectively and at a reasonable pace.Ashesi Universit

Applied project submitted to the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, Ashesi University, in partial fulfillment of Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, May 2022In response to the recent advancement in technology and its tremendous impact, many businesses have integrated technological tools into their business operations. The food industry is no exception. In the global food industry, technology has made it possible to improve food services, increase customer satisfaction and maximize business returns. There have been changes such as the shift from conventional paper ordering at restaurants to online pre-ordering of meals through the internet. Developments in restaurant software and POS technologies have also aided restaurants in providing better services to their customers. However, the Ghanaian food industry has not taken full advantage of the emerging technologies to optimize its operations. The few restaurants that have adopted restaurant software have their applications limited to POS transactions or strictly online food ordering systems. The applications do not include some core aspects of restaurant operations, such as table reservation management, customer data management, and ecommerce integration. The lack of a centralized system to handle all these related aspects of the restaurant s operations leads to data inconsistency and redundancy issues. It also makes it difficult for management to analyze their business data because it is not stored in one location but scattered across different units. All these affect the restaurant s efficiency and profitability levels in the long run. In an attempt to enhance the efficiency of restaurant businesses in Ghana, this paper proposes a web-based restaurant management system for Kas Valley Restaurant, located in the Oyibi township of Accra, Ghana. The system will enable the restaurant to receive orders and payments online, process in-person orders, manage table reservations and customer data, and view analytics on their sales. All these functionalities on a single application would ensure data integrity, minimize data redundancy, foster industry innovation, and significantly improve the restaurant s overall efficiency. Additionally, iv using such software in a restaurant contributes to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation . In this regard, the restaurant management system will enhance technological innovation in the restaurant industry, hence increasing productivity levels.Ashesi Universit

Applied project submitted to the Department of Business Administration & Computer Science and Information Systems, Ashesi University, in partial fulfillment of Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration & Management Information Systems, May 2022Theovision International is a faith-based not-for-profit whose mission is to use cutting-edge oral techniques to spread God’s word and love in indigenous languages throughout Africa and beyond. The problem the consulting team presented with was that Theovision struggled to manage and engage its donors. However, an internal and external analysis and a comprehensive needs assessment revealed that Theovision, although it had existed for over 32 years, had low brand awareness and low visibility. This project aims to provide Theovision with a strategy that would allow it to increase the number of donors and turn its one-time donors into recurring ones. After extensive research, a three-step strategy was proposed to solve the challenges faced. The three step strategy included fundraising through partnerships with local churches and corporate institutions, a brand strategy that allows it to target a wider audience and a social media strategy.Ashesi Universit

A universal platform for electronic health records for low resource hospitals

Capstone Project submitted to the Department of Engineering, Ashesi University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering, May 2022Due to the lack of health management systems and technical know-how, most hospitals in Ghana continue to use a file-based system approach. While this method works, it is ineffective for storing and managing medical records. It is difficult to organize and maintain track of information that's dispersed all over the place. Likewise, there is no smart system in place to help transfer medical data from an instrument into the database system of a hospital management to aid in efficiency. Hence, this paper examines the shortcomings in the management methods utilized by Ghana's healthcare institutions, as well as the inefficiencies that result. It goes into details on the nature of electronic health records and the benefits they provide, such as making distance communication and data interchange more accessible, improving the quality of medical treatment, and so on. The project is broken down into three sections. The project's initial goal is to create a hospital management system that eliminates the need for paper medical records. Followed by the transfer of patient data from one hospital to another however, the hospitals must be on the same management system. Finally, to aid in making the system smart is the creation a pulse oximeter that sends the SpO2 value to the hospital management system's database. The report finishes by elaborating on the project's challenges, limitations, and a recommendation for what to do next.Ashesi Universit
