Capstone Project submitted to the Department of Engineering, Ashesi University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, May 2022Hand hygiene is one of the most effective ways of preventing infections by reducing the possibility of having disease-causing organisms on the hands. The rise in transmission of infectious diseases such as COVID-19 has led to increased awareness of the importance of hand hygiene and new methods of improving hand hygiene. Automatic hand sanitising machines were developed to combat the spread of disease-causing organisms, but their usefulness relies on them being operational. Most sanitising machines may remain depleted of sanitiser for long periods and dispense unequal amounts of sanitiser during each use. This project aims to implement a sanitising machine that can alert users of the level of the sanitiser and use usage statistics to predict when sanitiser should be kept on hand for refills.Ashesi Universit

Thesis submitted to the Department of Business Administration, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. The recent spurt of interest in digital currencies has spurred many Central Bank’s to create some form of digital currency in a bid to regulate the largely unfettered usage of digital currencies. As such Ghana’s Central bank’s financial technology (fintech) department has set out to create a new digital version of the Ghana cedi. However, it is important to note that the benefit it is purported to provide is largely based on existing methods of cashless payments such as Mobile money. As such, the purpose of this study was to explore the potential for wealth creation that is purported to be brought by the advent of the proposed eCedi. The study was largely predictive as the eCedi is still in its initial phase and relies heavily on subjective evidence as well as existing evidence. This information will be useful to the public who may be interested in knowing the potential impact of this currency so they can adopt it. The research design was based on a qualitative survey approach. A total of 6 individuals in Ghana’s financial space were queried on the potential impact of the eCedi. This data was then analyzed and grouped into themes which were identified as; implementation of the digital currency, benefits of central Bank digital currencies, mechanics of the eCedi and the Impact of the eCedi. By analyzing the responses from the interviewed persons, the research is able to show how best the eCedi could be implemented into day-to-day activities. Furthermore, recommendations were made concerning the research and for further researchAshesi Universit

Undergraduate thesis submitted to the Department of Business Administration, Ashesi University, in partial fulfillment of Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, May 2022The use of digital marketing strategies has become widespread, not only among large companies but also among smaller organisations and companies such as SMEs. Although some SMEs have been able to successfully inculcate digital marketing strategies into their operations, others struggle to do so due to various factors which this research study aims to reveal. There are several types of digital marketing strategies and different companies will require different strategies to get the most out of it. This study focuses on three main Industries and these are the healthcare industry, the food and beverage industry and the real estate industry. One aim of this study is to identify the various reasons why the SMEs under consideration use or do not use digital marketing strategies. This comparative study utilises the qualitative research method, specifically interviews to understand the digital marketing strategies SMEs utilise as well as how it contributes to the success of their company. Data was collected through audio recordings from respondents who answered questions related to marketing strategies (digital and traditional marketing strategies). Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Results from the study showed that SMEs using digital marketing recorded more benefits such as online visibility, attracting a wider net of customers as well as improved sales. SMEs who use traditional marketing however had the opposite reactions as they complained about low sales and lack of customers. Other results also proved that digital marketing strategies tended to be more effective as compared to traditional marketing. The implications of this study add to previous literature and affirm the importance of digital marketing to the business world especially SMEs in Ghana. It also reveals the need to switch from traditional marketing to digital marketing as the world is extensively expanding into a digital world.Ashesi Universit

    No full text
Undergraduate Thesis Submitted to The Department of Business Administration, Ashesi University College in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Award of Bachelor of Science Degree in Business AdministrationIn most communities where poultry products are not commonly consumed, those interested in poultry production must find a way to keep their hands out of hot water when it comes to sales and the cost of making sales. Regardless of the fact that there are a number of marketing strategies available, the marketing performance of some poultry products in our community must be strengthened by the implementation of other strategies in order to increase sales. To that purpose, poultry farmers must employ appropriate strategies to either increase or compensate for the costs of employing them. Poultry farmers will explore using personal selling to market their products as a result of these factors. Personal selling is claimed to be complex to maintain in some studies, but it has been found to be the most effective when it comes to attracting customers, especially when sales are low. This study, looked into how effective personal selling on livestock farmers’ ability is to sell their products in Ghana’s poultry industry. This research attempted to delve into the challenges that poultry farmers encounter while employing personal selling and other marketing strategies that the poultry farmers or industry use. It also looked at the steps involved in putting the personal selling strategy into practice for poultry farmers. The study employed the mixed method which is the combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis in order to obtain data from the poultry farmers and consumers. Personal selling is used by all of the farmers who were interviewed as part of their marketing efforts. Personal selling is used by 3 out of 10 people (30%) as their sole marketing strategy, while the remaining 7 employ both personal selling and advertising. The average frequency with which the farmers used the indicated marketing strategies was 8.1 for all farmers, but the average was 7.3 for farmers who solely used personal selling.Ashesi Universit

Capstone Project submitted to the Department of Engineering, Ashesi University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, May 2022Asthma remains one of the most common respiratory diseases that affect many people all around the world, however, there is no cure or standard for identifying the causes since it differs for each person. Certain factors remain constant for most asthmatic patients such as very high or low temperatures and humidity, smoke, and pollen grains. These conditions are very difficult to detect unless the patient has the resources which would help with the measurement and detection of these conditions. Additionally, it is difficult for doctors to determine if the patient would require more dosages based on their environment when there is no data to work with. This project focuses on monitoring the environmental conditions of asthmatic patients for effective management and the development of a dosage counter to keep track of how often their inhaler is used. The data from the environmental system would be sent to the database and the count from the database counter would be sent to the patient's device.Ashesi Universit

Capstone Project submitted to the Department of Engineering, Ashesi University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, May 2022More than 75,000 people in Ghanaian coastal areas rely on saltwater consumption, which has often caused dental damage and diseases such as cholera and bilharzia. The wells and boreholes in coastal areas supply water with high saline content because of underground seepage from the sea. The existing desalination technologies are expensive and unaffordable for coastal settlers. Solar energy costs have become relatively bearable in the past decade, and desalination means can be developed using low-cost resources with the excellent compromise to produce potable water effectively. This project uses a solar-powered desalination system to produce 100 litres of potable water per day.Ashesi Universit

Capstone Project submitted to the Department of Engineering, Ashesi University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, May 2022The mining exploration stage in mining is the process where the investigation of the presence of a mineral is done. There are so many mining exploration methods that are being used worldwide. However, in Africa, the exploration methods being used are costly, time-consuming, and detrimental to the environment. This project looks at a way to address this problem in a way that reduces sample collection, gives large area interpretation, and does not require drilling. To accomplish this, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) that can carry a laser and a camera was designed and fabricated. The main aim of the project is to design a UAV that carries a laser that allows visualization of the response from a biologically engineered organism and a camera that captures the response from the organism. In the study, computational fluid analysis, fatigue and static stress analysis were carried out on the UAV. The results from the study showed that lasers and cameras can be coordinated to work together for imaging together with a drone.Ashesi Universit

Capstone Project submitted to the Department of Engineering, Ashesi University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, May 2022Pulse oximeters are non-invasive medical health devices for measuring oxygen saturation and pulse rate of humans. Pulse oximeters used for neonates have been identified to have some limitations in terms of their bulkiness in size, the need for a pulse sensor attachment to a monitoring device to obtain readings and their expensive nature. This project explores a pulse oximeter design to eliminate these limitations and create an accurate alternative for neonatal pulse oximeters. The proposed design includes a pulse sensor and a control and display circuit self-sufficiently powered by a direct current source of voltage. It employs analog signal processing, digital signal processing (DSP) with a low-power but highly efficient microprocessor to ensure accurate values are obtained. The project explores this design but however implemented part of the design (Infrared (IR) sensor) based on the materials and electrical components available. Even though the proposed design was not built as whole, various sections of the design was implemented or simulated and were feasible. The results from the IR sensor built was compared to a commercial pulse oximeter and from the statistical analysis conducted, the two systems have similar readings confirmed by the t-value of 0.917 in the paired t-test. Unfiltered data was used with the algorithm developed and the DSP and the readings for the SpO2 and pulse rate were similar to the commercial oximeter.Ashesi Universit

Design and implementation of a CAN Bus data logger with multiple communication interfaces for vehicles

Capstone Project submitted to the Department of Engineering, Ashesi University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering, May 2022Modern vehicles have been equipped with electronic control units (ECUs) to control the electrical systems of cars. Although this system is built for the car's performance and provides manufacturers data to improve future designs of vehicles, it also presents an opportunity for vehicle data to be retrieved and analyzed to manage the car better. These ECUs can provide information about the car's health status, readings of various sensors, and several vehicle parameters. The data can be analyzed to determine driving behaviours that can improve fuel consumption rates and gas emissions of the vehicle. The data can also be used to diagnose vehicle faults. This project built an embedded device capable of reading and sending vehicle parameters to a remote database for future analysis. The device interfaces with the ISO15765 protocol, one of the five protocols of the Onboard Diagnostic System (OBD-II) available in all modern vehicles, to read data from the car. ISO15765 implements the standards of sending data on the Controller Area Network (CAN), a communication protocol for ECUs in vehicles. The data is transferred to a remote database or a mobile phone through Bluetooth when the Internet is unavailable. The data in the database is displayed in a mobile app. This project proves that vehicle data from ECUs can be transferred to a remote database through a wireless embedded device.Ashesi Universit
