Representations of Monstrous Women and Feminist Myth-Making in Heresies: A Feminist Publication on Art and Politics (1977-1993)
In this thesis, I investigate representations of monstrous women in the articles and promotional materials of Heresies: A Feminist Publication on Art and Politics (1977-1993). Through close reading and textual analysis of Heresies issues, my research reveals that while images of monstrous women in Heresies are drawn from historical representations, they have revisions unique to the magazine. Building on existing scholarship, my research sheds new light on ways in which Heresies’ representations of monstrous women are interconnected with feminist concepts of myth-making of the period. I argue that through this process of visual editing and placement, representations of monstrous women are used to deliver feminist messages within a ground-breaking, trailblazing journal during one of the most exciting times in feminist art history
Parental Involvement Beliefs, Support for Learning, and Learning Behaviours in Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) during COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted education in Canada, posing notable challenges for children and parents, especially those with special needs like Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This study examines parental involvement and support for children's learning during this period, focusing on factors such as self-efficacy, role beliefs, time/energy, and knowledge/skills. Analyzing data from a nationwide survey conducted in Spring 2021, involving 464 parents (Mage = 9.88 for ADHD diagnoses- children, Mage = 9.49 for typically developing children), the results reveal that parents of children with ADHD felt a heightened sense of responsibility and availability for involvement but exhibited lower self-efficacy and support for their child's learning compared to parents of typically developing children. While parental involvement positively correlated with child learning behaviors, higher parental knowledge/skills and stronger role beliefs were associated with reduced learning behaviors in children with ADHD. The unique challenges faced by this population, along with their implications, are discussed
A Geospatial Analysis of E-Scooter Trip Production in Calgary, Alberta
The research presented explores how land-use and transportation infrastructure characteristics, weather variation and socio-demographics influence the production of shared, dockless E-Scooter trips in the City of Calgary, over four years between 2019 and 2022, during their pilot program through the estimation of a Zonal Based Negative Binomial-Spatial Linear Feedback (NB-SLFM) Trip Generation Model incorporating autoregressive terms. The model uses daily Origin Destination E-Scooter trip counts collected by the City of Calgary and regresses this against obtained point of interest and land-use data, public transit and transportation network data and historical weather data to describe Calgary’s transportation landscape and identify potential trip attractors, influences and also assert if spatial interactions between nearby locations also impact E-Scooter travel. Findings show that land-use characteristics and transportation infrastructure are strongly associated with shared, dockless E-Scooter travel. Consequently, the models highlight the prevalence of positive autocorrelation, indicating the presence of spatial interactions between neighbouring units
Geological History of the Atira Mons Large Shield Volcano, Beta Regio, Venus
Atira Mons is a large (300,000 km2) low-relief (1.8 km) shield volcano, with individual flows extending up to 700 km from a central caldera. It is located 3,000 km NW from the major plume center Beta Regio. Detailed mapping on a scale 1:500,000 of the flows has identified fifty-three flow units, grouped into eleven packages. Cross-cutting relationships indicate a multi-episodic eruption history with provisional identification of six stages. The longest and most voluminous flows are concentrated in the early stages, while younger pulses are generally shorter and less voluminous. A central caldera hosts the youngest volcanism, where several stages of caldera collapse are indicated. The volume of the volcano is estimated using various methods, yielding values from 47,000 to 270,000 km3. The larger estimates and some of Atira Mons’ characteristics are consistent with Large Igneous Provinces (LIP) on Earth, particularly the Benham Rise Oceanic LIP and its Apolaki Caldera
Unruly Practices: Prefigurative Aspirations and the Radical Imagination in the Occupy Movement in Canada
This dissertation examines the 2011 Occupy movement in Canada, with a focus on internal movement dynamics and the experience of participation in three Canadian cities: Ottawa, Toronto, and Edmonton. Occupy’s primary tactic was the occupation of both public and privately-owned spaces through encampments, and as such Occupy was both a protest and also a space where people created temporary communities and activist hubs. A central argument of this thesis is that the movement's primary focus was the creation, enactment, and reproduction of practices within the encampments, rather than a strategic approach to achieving set goals. These practices were continually debated, reworked, and adjusted over the course of the movement. The concept of the radical imagination is used to conceptualize how movement actors imagine and enact a prefigurative politics, and how this prefigurative tendency played out in the movement’s efforts to make decisions, develop collective knowledge, and work out its principles and practices regarding safety and inclusion. Practice theory is used as a framework for understanding the relationship between structure and agency in the process of developing collective practices, norms, and values. This process is described as the creation of an Occupy field, in Bourdieu’s terms (1993), although the Occupy field did not align neatly with the broader field of activism. This approach underscores the agentive role of Occupy participants, who were actively involved in creation, self-reflection, critique, and debate, despite also reproducing elements of social hierarchies and exclusions. Contradictions emerged within the movement as participants grappled with, and times unconsciously reinforced, the forms of oppression to which they were opposed. An insider ethnographic methodology provides a ground-level perspective on the complex and dynamic processes that characterized participation in the movement, and an activist orientation toward the research captures the nuances of how movement actors frame issues in their own terms. By examining Occupy’s collective experiences and practices, this dissertation offers insights into the practical challenges and possibilities of creating inclusive, democratic spaces within social movements, contributing to a broader understanding of how social movements experiment with and strive to embody transformative ideals in practice
National Strategies for Financial Literacy Education in Brazil and Canada(2001-2022): Trajectories, Perspectives, and Alternatives
The growing attentiveness to financial literacy education in academic and political arenas has yet to result in a converging comprehension of the topic. The literature review indicates three main approaches to this theme: traditional, critical, and compassionate. This thesis analyzed the weight of these perspectives in the trajectories of national strategies for financial literacy education in Brazil and Canada (2001-2022). Ten official documents from each country were examined, for a total of 2,163 pages, embracing a qualitative process combined with a quantitative content analysis. The research showed that the Brazilian policies went from a broad to a narrow understanding of financial literacy education, while the Canadian strategies followed the opposite path. The analysis also revealed that the national strategies in both countries privileged more or fewer elements of the critical and compassionate perspective in specific circumstances. However, the traditional approach, with an emphasis on individual money management, was always predominant
Investigation of the Distribution-Based Network Control Learning Environment
This thesis explores the application of Distribution Based Network Control (DBNC) using Reinforcement Learning (RL) to manage dynamic network environments. It examines how the controller’s learning environment affects the controllability of influence diffusion within a network, focusing on control signals produced through RL, the diffusion rate within the Real-value Voter Model (RVM), and the role of control nodes, or influencers. Extending McKenney’s work, this research evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of the controller’s RL environment on small-world networks. The study found that the controller identified critical signal values for various control node configurations and that lower diffusion rates required smaller control signals. Additionally, excluding control nodes' opinions from the network state calculation hindered network control, highlighting the importance of these nodes in controlling the network. This thesis enhances the understanding of DBNC in controlling stochastic diffusion in social networks
Applications of TrEnDi
In mass spectrometry (MS), chemical derivatization is commonly employed to improve the ionization efficiency, sensitivity, selectivity, and/or separation of analytes in various sample types. Developed methods should ideally offer a simple, rapid, cost-effective, and high-yielding product formation, as well as unambiguous detection. Although desired, it can be challenging to consolidate the above beneficial attributes into a single derivatization strategy. Recently, trimethylation enhancement using diazomethane (TrEnDi) has emerged as a chemical derivatization technique that encompasses these analytical advantages, however, to date, there has been limited applications in real-world samples. To ameliorate this, foundational TrEnDi protocols have been developed herein, improving liquid chromatography (LC)-MS detection of prominent lipids, herbicides, illicit substances, and neurotransmitters in a range of complex sample matrices. Herbicides glyphosate, glufosinate, and respective metabolites present at residual quantities on field-grown soybean/canola plants exhibited enhanced LC-MS retention and sensitivity, increasing their signal above limits of detection. The controlled substance morphine was fully derivatized in a urine sample and demonstrated improved LC-MS detection. Post-modification, γ-aminobutyric acid yielded a more sensitive, permethylated product in goldfish retina supernatant samples, demonstrating feasibility of TrEnDi in high-salt containing solutions. Across the 25 analytes selectively investigated, 100% of them yielded permethylated products, with 92% exhibiting reproducible gains in MS-based sensitivity, ranging from 1.2–fold to 340–fold. Building upon original reports, TrEnDi demonstrates its ability to be a tuneable derivatization method for its facile incorporation in pre-existing biological, environmental, forensics, and neurological sample workflows, with the potential for further adoption in other fields of analysis
Storytelling Through Song: Fawn Wood and Leela Gilday Raising Awareness of Contemporary Issues Affecting Indigenous Peoples
This thesis explores two areas of interest; the first foregrounds Indigenous storytelling, largely through song, as theory, data, and method. Using a bottom-up approach, it privileges the voices of First Nations female musicians as the foundation for the project rather than scholarly literature to decolonize the research process and listen differently. This thesis explores the music and social commentary of Fawn Wood and Leela Gilday and the ways in which these artists use music and storytelling to raise awareness of contemporary issues affecting Indigenous Peoples in Canada. This thesis engages Indigenous research methodologies to demonstrate that Indigenous artists enact storytelling as theory and method that is just as valid as – and complements and, in some cases, enhances – scholarly literature. These artists use storytelling via song as a form of activism, to advocate for Indigenous Peoples and raise awareness for issues, requiring audiences to listen closely and openly
Multi-Objective Optimization and Sensitivity Analysis of Forced-Steering Bogies Using Surrogate Models and NSGA-III
This thesis presents an optimization methodology for enhancing the curving and tangent performance of a forced steering passenger train. Using the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-III (NSGA-III), we identify Pareto optimal solutions that balance primary suspension stiffness and steering linkage parameters. The objectives—wheelset unloading, derailment risk, rail rollover risk, and car body lateral acceleration—capture critical performance criteria. A high-fidelity simulation model, validated against conventional rail vehicle data, is used within the optimization procedure. To streamline the process, a Sobol global sensitivity analysis identifies the most impactful design parameters, which are prioritized during optimization. Given the computational intensity, a Kriging surrogate model is employed to approximate the relationship between design variables and objectives. Post-optimization, the robustness of selected Pareto solutions is tested under varying operating conditions, such as different curve radii and track friction, to identify the most resilient designs
