    Temperature Characterization of a Rubidium Vapor Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Quantum Memory

    Quantum communications aims to bring the quantum advantages to a large network. However, distributing quantum capabilities is a complicated task with many challenges. Electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) based quantum storage is a candidate for implementation of quantum repeaters for the purpose of overcoming distance limitations in quantum communications. In this thesis we analyze the use of warm rubidium (Rb) vapor as a medium for a quantum memory. Starting by combining the Hamiltonian of a 2 level system with Maxwells equations we will model the interactions between light and the atomic system. We then examine simulations of the system and characterization of key features such as susceptibility and absorption. We are able to compare simulated spectroscopy models with spectroscopy data obtained from experiment to characterize the temperature of a rubidium vapor cell. These findings contribute to the ongoing development of quantum memory systems for efficient quantum repeaters

    Hooked on empowerment: A feminist’s perspective on the social and biologically practical aspects of recreational angling

    This thesis integrates feminist methodology into recreational angling research, blending social and biological perspectives. Chapter 2 examines barriers faced by women leaders in Ontario’s angling community—including cultural stereotypes, institutional exclusion, interpersonal mistreatment, and personal doubt—based on 38 in-depth interviews. Findings emphasize the emotional complexity of angling, the impact of male allyship, and the resilience of women who build community through advocacy. Chapter 3 explores the biological effects of angling practices, focusing on how gear selection influences fish fight intensity and post-release impairment in Northern Pike. This dual-method approach challenges traditional notions of objectivity, advocating for inclusive fisheries management by valuing lived experience, reflexivity, and co-produced knowledge. By centering women anglers’ voices and their connections to community and fish, this thesis argues that empowerment and sustainability are best achieved when expertise and experience are understood as interconnected within fisheries management

    Enhancing Computer Network Simulation Accuracy through Calibrating Processing Delay and Model Optimization

    Accurate computer network simulations are essential for predicting and analyzing network behavior in a controlled and cost-effective manner. This thesis tackles the challenge of aligning simulation outputs with real world computer network data by calibrating models to minimize discrepancies in key performance metrics, including End-to-End delay, loss, and throughput. Comparative analysis of frameworks such as RouteNet Fermi and BNNetSimulator highlights persistent gaps in delay accuracy, underscoring OMNeT++/INET’s superiority in achieving closer alignment through targeted calibration. By incorporating processing delay as a key parameter and employing a linear programming approach, this research significantly reduces the disparity between simulation results and real-world computer network performance. Recognizing that standard models may still fail to capture the full complexity of real world networking devices, a case study is conducted to demonstrate these limitations. To address them, a custom queuing model is introduced within OMNeT++/INET, enhancing the accuracy of delay predictions, effectively capturing loss behavior, and advancing the overall fidelity of computer network simulations
