    Reimagining our Built Realm through Grounding

    Grounding is a well-established term in the building industry that refers to the process of connecting electrical systems to the Earth, with the primary purpose of minimizing the risk of electrocution or electrical fires. This thesis aims to broaden the definition of these two terms through a design exploration that reorients our perspective towards the overlooked connection between the human body’s bioelectrical system and the Earth. Regarding humans, Grounding serves as a conduit for transferring electrons from the Earth to the human body through bare-skin contact, offering various health benefits while enhancing overall well-being. This architectural thesis will thus explore the potential of adapting existing grounding systems to reconnect humans to the earth's natural energy potential. This thesis proposes reimagining our built realm with grounding principles in mind, inherently developing a hybrid approach that integrates conductive properties into existing floor assemblies

    Measuring the electroweak production of a W boson in association with two jets using the ATLAS detector

    This dissertation presents a measurement of electroweak (EW) W boson production in association with two hadronic jets (Wjj). The measurement considers the combined electron and muon decay channels. It is performed using the full ATLAS Run 2 dataset, collected from proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) between 2015-2018. EW-Wjj production is a fundamental process in high-energy physics, providing a critical test of the Standard Model (SM). A key contribution to this process arises from vector boson fusion (VBF), which proceeds via the Z(γ)WW vertex, enabling direct tests of electroweak theory within the SM. EW Wjj production, particularly via VBF, is a rare process at the LHC. Utilizing the extensive Run 2 dataset, this measurement leverages the distinct kinematic features of EW Wjj production to suppress irreducible backgrounds. As a result, this dissertation presents the first fiducial differential cross section measurement across six key observables that probe the kinematics of EW Wjj production. These observables include the dijet invariant mass, the rapidity separation of the two jets, the azimuthal separation of the two jets, the dijet transverse momentum, the transverse momentum of the leading jet, and the transverse momentum of the charged lepton. The measured differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the latest theoretical predictions. Additionally, the total ATLAS EW Wjj cross section is measured to be 306.1 ± 6.6 (stat) ± 34.6 (syst) fb. Beyond its role in testing the SM, the measurement of EW Wjj production provides sensitivity to potential new physics beyond current theoretical predictions. Furthermore, precise measurements of EW Wjj production are instrumental in studying analogous VBF processes, such as VBF-Higgs production, which is of significant interest in the high-energy physics community

    Analysis of a Portable, Rb Vapour Based Quantum Memory for use in Quantum Communications

    In the fields of quantum computing and cryptography, methods to connect networks include the use of quantum repeaters. Challenges include problems of synchronization, where the Quantum Memory (QMem) comes into [play]. By storing photons and releasing them on demand, the issue of widespread synchronization equipment is replaced by the technical issues of optical storage. This thesis will summarize the classical performance of a Rb vapour based QMem, along with a description of the ancillary optics required to interface with such a system. We will see a system with a minimum coherence time of 130μs130\, \mu s, Bit error rate (BER) below 101010^{-10} for up to 100μs100\, \mu s of storage time, a Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) of up to 17 dB, and a maximum efficiency of approximately 12\%. Last will be discussion of improvements to the apparatus and future works

    A statistical ranking framework for ground temperature simulations in permafrost environments

    Permafrost thaw has implications for people living in permafrost areas, ecosystems, and the global climate. To assess this, robust model testing is essential. This thesis develops a model ranking framework and demonstrates it using ground surface temperature (GST) simulations at three clusters in the Northwest Territories, Canada. The models evaluated were the product of forcing GEOtop with three meteorological reanalysis datasets (MERRA-2, JRA-55, ERA5), and their ensemble mean was calculated to form a fourth model for evaluation. Simulations were evaluated using a combination of accordance measures (MAE, MBE, r ), by month and terrain type. Bootstrapping, which involves repeatedly sampling with replacement, enabled the inclusion of additional observational data without weighting model evaluation towards times and locations for which there was more data. The model framework automates rigorous testing, facilitating model-building decisions and supporting parameter selection. It simplifies model evaluation by providing streamlined comparisons for timeseries variables with available observations

    Effect of Teaching Complex Noun Phrases for Reading Comprehension Purposes in EAP Programs

    Complex noun phrases (CNPs), defined as phrases where a noun is the head modified by preceding or following lexical items, are a major vehicle of written academic English. However, CNPs are typically not explicitly addressed in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs for English language learners (ELLs) for reading purposes even though they present considerable challenges to ELLs in terms of processing and comprehension. This manuscript-based doctoral dissertation reports on a quasi-experimental mixed methods study that aims to investigate whether explicit instruction on the structure of CNPs and the parsing and paraphrasing strategies aimed to help the students expediently and accurately interpret them results in more accurate interpretation of sentences containing them. A two-phase mixed-methods study resulted in three publications in peer-reviewed journals. Phase 1 of the study involved designing and validating a pilot CNP comprehension test and investigating the specific challenges ELLs may have with processing and interpreting various CNPs. The results of both the CNP test and the interviews signal significant CNP parsing and interpretation challenges on the part of EAP students, identify the types of CNPs and the parsing and interpretation tasks that they find especially challenging, and underscore the need for explicit instruction on the structure of CNPs for reading purposes. Phase 2 of this study, published as two peer-reviewed articles, involved design and instruction of four teaching modules to an experimental group of 96 first-year EAP students consisting of several college- and university-based EAP classes, and measurement of their success in parsing and paraphrasing CNP through a pre- and a post-test and exit interviews/verbalization task. A comparable control group was given just the pre- and the post-test. The results of Phase 2 of the study suggest that the teaching intervention had a significant effect on the post-test scores, and that the participants considered the CNP reading strategies a useful enhancement of the academic reading curriculum and were able to apply most of the CNP parsing and interpretation strategies in the strategy verbalization task
