Adaptation of lease agreements for merchants in the event of possible future pandemics
The aim of this article is, first, to examine in detail the concept of contract adaptation, and then to analyze, within the framework of Article 138 of the Turkish Code of Obligations, how lease agreements can be adapted for merchants in the context of potential pandemics. The study will explore the theoretical foundations, legal bases, and conditions of application for contract adaptation, with particular emphasis on the legal status of lease agreements in the face of extraordinary circumstances such as pandemics. While assessing the impact of possible epidemic diseases on lease agreements, the article will analyze how the issue has evolved in light of legal disputes, court decisions, and precedents established by the Court of Cassation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the legal framework defining the rights and obligations of commercial tenants with regard to the adaptation of lease agreements during the pandemic period will be set out. Finally, the judiciary’s approach to the adaptation of lease agreements for commercial tenants will be evaluated, and the significance of provisional measures (interim injunctions) in this context will be emphasized
Digital literacy as a catalyst for sustainable development
Digital literacy is increasingly recognized as a foundational competency for achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs). This chapter examines the evolving relationship between digital literacy and sustainability, exploring how digital tools, platforms, and competencies can foster environmental awareness, support green technology adoption, and enhance multi-stakeholder collaboration. Drawing upon interdisciplinary theories such as meta-literacy and systems thinking, the chapter conceptualizes digital literacy not merely as a set of technical skills, but as a transformative framework for civic engagement, innovation, and inclusive participation. Real-world case studies from diverse geographic and socioeconomic contexts illustrate the enabling role of digital platforms in environmental education, policy reform, and marginalized community empowerment. The chapter also identifies key barriers to digital equity, including infrastructure gaps, resource disparities, and policy misalignments. Finally, it outlines strategic recommendations for educators, policymakers, and technology providers to integrate digital literacy into sustainability agendas through curriculum design, public–private partnerships, and digital inclusion policies. By reframing digital literacy as both a means and an outcome of equitable digital transformation, this chapter highlights its critical potential to advance global sustainability efforts in the face of growing ecological and social complexity
Cognitive emotion regulation strategies as mediators between childhood maltreatment and eating disorders: A cross-sectional study
Background: Eating disorder (ED) symptoms are common in the general population and are often associated with childhood maltreatment (CM). Emotion regulation difficulties are likewise linked to both CM and ED symptoms, yet the role of cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS) in this relationship remains underexplored. Culturally specific forms of adversity, such as parental overprotection and overcontrol (OP–OC), have also been largely overlooked. Method: This cross-sectional study investigated whether adaptive and maladaptive CERS mediate the associations between six forms of CM and ED symptoms in a non-clinical sample of 352 Turkish adults. Participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire–Expanded, the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire–Short Form, and the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire. Mediation analyses were conducted using the PROCESS macro (Model 4) in SPSS v29. Results: The results revealed that, except for physical abuse, maladaptive CERS significantly mediated the associations between all CM types and ED symptoms, with full mediation found for emotional neglect and sexual abuse. Although adaptive CERS did not mediate these relationships, their use was significantly lower among individuals exposed to emotion-related maltreatment, including OP–OC. Discussion: These findings underscore the potential of maladaptive CERS as early indicators and modifiable risk factors in subclinical populations. Tailoring emotion regulation components within interventions like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy–Enhanced (CBT-E) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) may enhance efficacy, especially for trauma-exposed individuals. Preventive psychoeducational programmes in youth and community settings could offer timely support before clinical symptoms emerge
Cognitive and affective empathy, executive functions, and the key role of personal distress: Why do autistic traits predict mental health symptoms in neurotypical adults?
Individuals with elevated autistic traits often experience internalizing symptoms that affect their quality of life. However, the mechanisms underlying this process in neurotypical populations remain unclear. The present study investigated the mediating roles of executive functions (cognitive flexibility, working memory, inhibitory control) and social cognition (affective empathy, cognitive empathy) in this relationship. The mental health symptoms of 159 neurotypical adult participants (ranging 18-45) were assessed using the Autism Quotient, Depression Anxiety Stress-21, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and Generalized Anxiety Questionnaire-7. Within the same participants, executive functions were assessed using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task, N-back Task, and Go/No-Go Task, while social cognition was assessed using the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, the Eyes Test, and the Self-Assessment Manikin. Results indicated that autistic traits were positively associated with mental health symptoms. Among the examined variables, personal distress-a component of affective empathy—was the only factor showing a link between attention-switching difficulties and mental health symptoms. Neither cognitive empathy nor executive functions demonstrated significant associations. These findings suggest that heightened affective empathy may be related to greater emotional vulnerability in individuals with elevated autistic traits. The study contributes to a better understanding of the associations among autistic traits, affective empathy, and mental health, and underscores the importance of considering emotion-regulation processes in future research
Party-appointed experts in international commercial and investment arbitration: Impact on proceedings, problems and solutions
In adjudication, legal disputes are resolved by judges or arbitrators, considering the facts of the case (Vakıâ, Sachverhalt) and ascertaining the relevant legal rules for the specific case. This act of the adjudicator is called a subsumption. The establishment of facts is the first step in any case, without regard to its criminal, civil, or international law character. Judges and arbitrators need facts and the law to perform their decision-making duty. This is also true for international commercial arbitration and international investment arbitration disputes
As artificial intelligence (AI) transforms higher education and universities are increasingly adopting AI-driven tools to personalize learning, streamline administration, and enhance student engagement. However, this integration presents a paradox: while AI promises to improve educational outcomes, it also risks deepening students’ digital dependency. This paper explores how AI features like persuasive design and data-driven personalization can unintentionally foster compulsive behaviors and cognitive overload. Drawing on theories such as Cognitive Load Theory and Surveillance Capitalism, it critiques how AI may mirror the addictive patterns of social media and entertainment technologies. The paper proposes a balanced approach to AI integration, recommending the adoption of mindful design principles, digital well-being policies, and ethical guidelines that prioritize student mental health alongside academic performance. It concludes by urging educators, policymakers, and developers to collaboratively design AI systems that enhance learning while safeguarding students’ well-being and autonomy.
The epistemic virtues of an Ottoman scholar: Discourses on being an ʿĀlim in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries
A recent trend in the history of knowledge is the study of historical discourses on scholarly practices and ideals through the lens of epistemic virtues. Realizing the centrality of virtue language to past discussions of scholarship, historians of science and humanities have increasingly drawn on the work of virtue epistemologists to investigate what good scholarship meant in particular situations. By examining specific intellectual virtues such as objectivity, impartiality, thoroughness, and creativity, they have explored how these key characteristics of scholarly personae emerged and acquired particular meanings and why they were often contested in different contexts. However, the field has thus far tended to focus on early modern European thought and the responsibilist stream of virtue epistemology. As an endeavor to contribute to this expanding field, the article aims to highlight some aspects of late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Ottoman intellectual debates on being a scholar by drawing primarily on four major educational texts of the period, namely, Fayḍ al-Ḥaram and Sharḥ al-Akhlāq al-ʿAḍudiyya by Müneccimbāşī (d. 1702), Tartīb al-ʿUlūm by Sāçaḳlīzāde (d. 1732), and the anonymous Kevākib-i Sebʿa. I argue that al-malaka al-ʿilmiyya, the Ottoman term for intellectual virtue, was central to discussions of scholarly ideals and will explore the possibility of interpreting it as a form of virtue reliabilism
Does self-efficacy matter for the affective organizational commitment of remote working employees in Turkey? A moderated mediation case
In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, organizations initially adopted remote work practices out of necessity; however, many have since recognized and embraced it as a practical and preferred operational model. With the growing adoption of remote work practices where employees are physically distanced from their organizations and colleagues, the organizational commitment of remote workers becomes increasingly significant for organizations. Recent studies have focused on identifying factors that enhance organizational commitment in remote working environments. This study contributes to the existing literature by identifying the specific role of self-efficacy in shaping affective organizational commitment while also analyzing the mediating effect of servant leadership and the moderating influence of Herzberg's intrinsic motivation within this relationship. An online survey was conducted to collect data from remote employees across various industries in Turkey. The model was analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and Amos 23.0, and Hayes PROCESS Macro was applied to test the hypotheses. A total of 487 remote employees from Turkey participated in the study, evaluating their superior's leadership, work-related self-efficacy, and affective organizational commitment. The findings disclose a positive relationship between self-efficacy and servant leadership and a positive and significant relationship between servant leadership and affective organizational commitment. Moreover, servant leadership partially mediates the association between self-efficacy and affective organizational commitment, and intrinsic motivation significantly moderates the relationship between self-efficacy and servant leadership
