Philosophy and friendship
WhenImadethemistakeofagreeing to write commentary onfourteen chapters that I knew little or nothing about, I had no idea how deep was my folly. I am a trained philosopher of religion, trained by one of the best—Alvin Plantinga. I have been practising my trade for nearly four decades. I’m often asked to speak or write on the philosophy of religion. But I’ve come to learn that I have really been trained in philosophy of Christianity, by one of the best Christian philosophers—Alvin Plantinga. I’ve been practising the trade of Christian philosophy of religion for nearly four decades. I’m often asked to speak or write on the philosophy of Christianity. It’s not just me. The vast majority of philosophy of religion of the past fifty plus years is philosophy of Christianity. But I have few regrets. Honestly, given the hostility to religious belief in the academy, it was a relief to work among a community of like-minded scholars towards common goals
Human capital, economic complexity, and ecological footprints: Crafting a sustainable development policy framework for E7 nations
Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, with far-reaching implications for ecosystems, economies, and societies worldwide. Human capital (HUC) and economic complexity (ECC) "understood as structural transformation toward more sophisticated and knowledge-based production" can be pivotal in curtailing ecological degradation. In this context, the study explores the intricate relationship between HUC, financial development, financial globalization, gross domestic product, ECC, and ecological footprints from 1995 to 2021. To achieve this objective, advanced econometric estimation methods are employed. The results indicate the presence of cross-sectional dependence and slope heterogeneity in the dataset. The variables present a mixed order of stationarity, while the Westerlund test indicates the presence of a long-run equilibrium association. The results from the Method of Moments Quantile regression indicate that ECC posed a positive but insignificant effect in the lower quantile (tau = 0.1-0.25), while negative and significant in the middle (tau = 0.50) and upper quantiles (tau = 0.75-0.90). Moreover, financial globalization negatively and significantly affects ecological footprints through all the quantiles except the lower quantile (tau = 0.1). Financial development, gross domestic product, and HUC enhance environmental degradation by escalating ecological footprints. Based on the results, the study suggested enhancing the ECC and financial globalization, while sustainable utilization of HUC and strict regulations for the financial sector to foster sustainable development in E7 countries
This ethnographic study explores the construction of religious identity among the Muslim Western diaspora in Istanbul and their perceptions of home and belonging. While Istanbul has a rich history of migration, recent trends reveal a significant influx of Muslim Western people relocating to the city. Investigating the life trajectories influencing their migration decisions and shaping their experiences in Istanbul, this thesis focuses on the development of religious identity and notions of home and belonging. Examining the intricate worlds of interlocutors within Istanbul's complex cityscape, this work aims to reveal how Muslims have innovatively redefined their concepts of home and belonging, particularly in religious terms, navigating the fluid boundaries between the secular and sacred within the city and their own imaginations…Bu etnografik çalışma, Müslüman Batılı diasporasının İstanbul'daki dini kimlik inşasını, ve aidiyet algılarını araştırmaktadır. İstanbul'un zengin bir göç tarihine sahip olmasına rağmen, son trendler Batılı Müslümanların şehre önemli ölçüde göç ettiğini göstermektedir. Göç kararlarını etkileyen yaşam yörüngelerini ve İstanbul'daki deneyimlerini şekillendiren faktörleri inceleyen bu tez, dini kimliğin gelişimi, ev (yuva) ve aidiyet kavramlarına odaklanmaktadır. Bu çalışma, İstanbul'un karmaşık kentsel manzarasında görüşülen kişilerin karmaşık yaşam dünyalarını inceleyerek, Müslümanların özellikle dini terimlerde ev ve aidiyet kavramlarını nasıl yeniden tanımladıklarını, şehirdeki seküler ve kutsal arasındaki sıvı sınırları ve kendi hayal güçleri içinde nasıl gezindiklerini ortaya koymayı hedeflemektedir
Spirituality as predictor of psychological well-being at work in the Moroccan context: A cross-sectional study
Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between spirituality at work and employees' psychological well-being in the Moroccan context. Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive, and quantitative study involved a sample of 1,110 employees, of which 57.8% were men. Data were collected using an online questionnaire that included sociodemographic data, the “Spirituality at Work” scale, and the Psychological Well-being scale. Descriptive statistics and correlational analyses were utilized to analyse the data and investigate the research objectives of interest. Results: Our findings indicated a positive correlation between spirituality at work and well-being at work, with a significant impact indicated by a beta coefficient of 0.635 (p < 0.001). Among the dimensions of workplace spirituality, meaningful work emerged as a key predictor of well-being with a beta coefficient of 0.893. At the same time, a sense of community also showed a strong correlation with well-being at 0.724. The dimension of inner life had a moderate impact, reflected by a beta coefficient of 0.417. In terms of psychological well-being, dimensions such as autonomy (β = 0.363), positive relationships with others (β = 0.421), personal growth (β = 0.534), and purpose in life (β = 0.188) were all significantly associated, though purpose in life had the lowest correlation. Discussion: This study demonstrates that enhancing spirituality at work significantly contributes to employees' psychological well-being. Meaningful work and a strong sense of community are critical components of this relationship. The findings suggest that organizations should institutionalize spiritual values to foster a supportive and productive work environment, ultimately enhancing employee well-being and organizational effectiveness. Take-home message: This study reveals that in the Moroccan context, spirituality at work is a significant predictor of employees' psychological well-being. Key elements such as meaningful work and a strong sense of community greatly contribute to this positive relationship. These findings suggest that Moroccan organizations should integrate spiritual values to enhance employee wellbeing and foster a more supportive and effective work environment
[Book Review]: "Kavşakta Kadınlar: Filistin Feminist Hareketleri Ulusalcılık, Laiklik ve İslami Kimlik Arasında"
This book by Islah Jad explores the evolution of the Palestinian feminist movement, examining its intersection with nationalism, secularism, and Islamism. Jad highlights the complex dynamics Palestinian women face as they balance advocating for gender equality with participating in national resistance. The study traces the impact of colonialism, internal political struggles, and international influences on women’s organizations from the British mandate to the post-Oslo period. It also examines the roles of secular and Islamic feminists, reflecting on their divergent visions for women’s rights. The book traces the impact of the political split between the West Bank and Gaza in 2006, highlighting the differing feminist strategies in each region. While the West Bank focused on legal reforms and women’s rights, Gaza prioritized resistance and self-reliance. Despite these efforts, women on both sides reinforced the political divide rather than working to heal it. Jad critiques the emphasis on state-building and international frameworks, arguing that these approaches failed to foster democratic foundations or strengthen the national liberation struggle. Ultimately, Palestinian women’s political engagement remains fragmented, with limited collaboration across political divides.
This article undertakes a comparative examination of the social ontologies, or theories of civilization, proposed by John Searle and Ibn Khaldun. It suggests that a careful juxtaposition of Searle and Ibn Khaldun's social ontologies yields complementary perspectives on the emergence and nature of social reality. They both delineate a distinction between two categories of entities: humanindependent and human-dependent. The former makes up the natural world, while the latter constitutes the social world. Both scholars attempt to understand the second category of entities, which Searle refers to as human civilization and Ibn Khaldun calls ʿumrān. Although Searle and Ibn Khaldun share a common understanding regarding the importance of human activity in shaping social reality, their perspectives diverge when it comes to elucidating the mechanisms behind this phenomenon. Does the social world arise primarily from cognitive processes, or is it predominantly a consequence of linguistic expressions and speech acts? Searle asserts that language forms the basis of social reality, whereas Ibn Khaldun puts forth a social ontology based on reason. While Ibn Khaldun's social ontology explains the construction of tangible social entities such as buildings, Searle's theory can explain how is it that a mere physical structure transforms into an epistemologically objective fact—a university. Ultimately, this paper suggests that viewing the social world through the lenses of these two theories provides an intriguing and holistic perspective. This article suggests that the juxtaposition of these two ontological frameworks enriches our comprehension of the processes that give rise to the ontological-physical and epistemologicalinstitutional dimensions of social entities
Havalimanlarında self servis kioskları kullanmaya yönelik kullanıcı davranışsal niyetini etkileyen faktörler: Yapısal Eşitlik Modellemesi (SEM) yaklaşımı
Modern airports are undergoing a digital transformation characterized by a shift towards passenger self-service technologies (SSTs) to enhance efficiency and passenger experience. Self-check-in kiosks (SCKs) are a prominent example of SSTs with the potential to benefit all airport stakeholders. However, the adaptation of SCKs by passengers is relatively slow compared to similar technologies. In addition, research on investigating factors influencing passenger adoption of SCKs remains limited. As a result, this study aims to bridge this gap by proposing a novel model that examines the determinants factors that influence passengers' behavioral intention to use SCKs. The proposed model integrates one of the most popular technology acceptance models (UTAUT2) with an SSTQUAL scale, which is specially designed to evaluate the quality aspect of SSTs. The proposed model encompasses five constructs from the UTAUT2 model (performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, and hedonic motivation) and four constructs from the SSTQUAL scale (functionality, assurance, security, and enjoyment). Additionally, the moderating effect of perceived risk on the relationship between behavioral intention and actual SCK usage was investigated. Data were collected from 380 passengers through surveys at two major airports in Istanbul, Türkiye. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to test the research hypotheses. The results of SEM analysis indicate that performance expectancy, social influence, functionality, and enjoyment positively influence behavioral intention to use SCKs. Moreover, perceived risk was found to have a negative moderating effect on the relationship between behavioral intention and SCK usage. This study contributes to the understanding of SCK adoption by passengers and provides valuable insights for airport managers to optimize SCK implementation and usage.

The impact of moral education interventions on adolescents' sociomoral reasoning skills
This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a moral training workshop designed to enhance sociomoral reasoning among adolescents. Drawing on the principles of ethical decision-making and moral development theory, the intervention sought to provide participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate complex moral dilemmas. Employing a randomized controlled trial design, the study included 50 adolescents aged 12 to 16 years, randomly assigned to either the intervention or control group. The intervention comprised eight 75-minute sessions conducted over four weeks, focusing on moral dilemmas, perspective-taking, ethical decision-making, and reflection on personal values. Sociomoral reasoning was assessed using the Defining Issues Test-2 (DIT-2) at three time points: pre-intervention, post-intervention, and a two-month follow-up. Analysis of Variance with Repeated Measurements indicated significant improvements in sociomoral reasoning scores for the experimental group compared to the control group (p < 0.01). The experimental group showed a notable increase in DIT-2 scores from pre-test to post-test, which was maintained at the two-month follow-up. The Bonferroni Post-Hoc Test further confirmed these findings, highlighting significant advancements in sociomoral reasoning immediately following the workshop, with sustained effects over time. The moral training workshop effectively enhanced sociomoral reasoning among adolescents, suggesting that structured moral education interventions can significantly impact ethical development. These findings underscore the importance of incorporating moral reasoning training in adolescent education, providing a foundation for ethical decision-making that can guide behavior across various life contexts
