Aim: This study explores the predictors and associated risk factors of sleep quality, quality of life, fatigue, and mental health among the Turkish population during the COVID-19 post-pandemic period. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional survey using multi-stage, stratified random sampling was employed. In total, 3,200 persons were approached. Of these, 2,624 (82%) completed the questionnaire package consisting of socio-demographic information, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the WHO Quality of Life Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF), Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS), Patients Health Questionnaire (PHQ-15), GAD-7 anxiety scale, and the 21-item Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-21). Results: Significant differences between genders were found regarding socio-demographic characteristics (p < 0.01). Using PHQ-15 for depressive disorders, significant differences were found between normal and high severity scores (≥ 10), regarding age group (p < 0.001), gender (p = 0.049), educational level (p < 0.001), occupational status (p = 0.019), cigarette smoking (p = 0.002), waterpipe-narghile smoking (p = 0.039), and co-morbidity (p = 0.003). The WHOQOL-BREF indicated strong correlations between public health, physical health, psychological status, social relationships, environmental conditions, and sleep disorders (p < 0.01). Furthermore, comparisons of the prevalence of mental health symptoms and sleeping with PHQ-15 scores ≥ 10 (p = 0.039), fatigue (p = 0.012), depression (p = 0.009), anxiety (p = 0.032), stress (p = 0.045), and GAD-7 (p < 0.001), were significantly higher among the mental health condition according to sleeping disorder status. Multiple regression analysis revealed that DASS21 stress (p < 0.001), DASS21 depression (p < 0.001), DASS21 anxiety (p = 0.002), physical health (WHOQOL-BREF) (p = 0.007), patient health depression-PHQ-15 (p = 0.011), psychological health (WHOQOL-BREF) (p = 0.012), fatigue (p = 0.017), and environmental factors (WHOQOL-BREF) (p = 0.041) were the main predictor risk factors associated with sleep when adjusted for gender and age. Conclusion: The current study has shown that sleep quality was associated with the mental health symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, and fatigue. In addition, insufficient sleep duration and unsatisfactory sleep quality seemed to affect physical and mental health functioning

Against the odds: Explaining mainstream Montenegrin parties domination of Bosniak and Albanian minority representation in postcommunist Montenegro

    No full text
The Bosniak and Albanian minorities in postcommunist Montenegro have supported and been represented by mainstream Montenegrin parties more than by their ethnic parties. This stands in striking contrast to the situation in neighboring Serbia and North Macedonia where the Bosniak and Albanian minorities vote almost exclusively for their ethnic parties. The Montenegrin case stands out as deviant also when one considers a number of extant explanations, all of which would predict a different outcome. Montenegrin Bosniaks and Albanians constitute two native, sizeable and geographically concentrated minority groups inhabiting a country with an institutional framework and several special electoral arrangements favoring minority parties. Drawing on original data on Bosniak and Albanian legislators elected across 12 parliamentary elections in Montenegro (1990-2023), municipality and country-level parliamentary election results and 12 semi-structured elite interviews, I argue that what explains the deviance in the Montenegrin case is the peculiar nature of Montenegrin identity, specifically the fact that it does not pit the majority against minority, but rather it pits the Montenegrin and Serbian components of the Orthodox majority against each other and in such a context the non-Orthodox minorities become critical political allies of the Montenegrin bloc against the Serbian one

A cross-cultural investigation of effective language pedagogy in teachers’ personal practical knowledge narratives: A cultural-ecological perspective

    Get PDF
[ArticleInPress]The current case study probes two international language teachers’ perspectives on the role culture plays in their perception of an effective language pedagogy through their personal practical knowledge narratives from a cultural ecological standpoint. To do this, two language teachers from two different cultural backgrounds (Iran and Japan) were asked to write a narrative about an effective class they had taught and how culture had influenced it. These narratives were read carefully and became the basis of three 60-minute semi-structured narrative interviews. Both narratives and interview data were analysed using a thematic analysis based in a cultural ecological perspective. The study contributes to the literature on culturally informed education by recognising culture as a distinctive factor affecting learning in different layers of the cultural ecology and can inform a culture-specific, nativized teacher education programme

    Get PDF
Background: Globally, one-third of pregnant women are at risk of iron deficiency, particularly in the African region. While recent findings show that iron and folate supplementation can lower the risk of adverse birth outcomes and childhood mortality, our understanding of its impact in Africa remains incomplete due to insufficient evidence. This protocol outlines the systematic review steps to investigate the impact of oral iron and folate supplementation during pregnancy on adverse birth outcomes, neonatal mortality and infant mortality in Africa. Methods and analysis: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase, Scopus, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases were searched for published articles. Google Scholar and Advanced Google Search were used for gray literature and nonindexed articles. Oral iron and/or folate supplementation during pregnancy is the primary exposure. The review will focus on adverse birth outcomes, neonatal mortality and infant mortality. Both Cochrane Effective Practice and Organization of Care and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale risk of bias assessment tools will be used. Meta-analysis will be conducted if design and data analysis methodologies permit. This systematic review and meta-analysis will provide up-to-date evidence about iron and folate supplementation’s role in adverse birth outcomes, neonatal mortality and infant mortality in the African region. Ethics and dissemination: This review will provide insights that help policymakers, program planners, researchers, and public health practitioners interested in working in the region. Pozitif psikolojide altruizm

One of the main topics in Islamic theology (kalām) is the examination of human voluntary discussed in classical works under the heading "af'āl al-ibād. On this subject, various theological schools have presented different views, often aligning these views with their doctrines by referencing verses from the Quran and Hadith. In the history of kalām, two radical stances emerge: the assertion that humans are the direct creators of their voluntary actions and the doctrine of hard determinism, which posits that free actions are essentially indistinguishable from voluntary actions. In contrast, the Ash'arite and Maturidī schools, adopt a moderate approach between these extremes. The Ash'arites emphasize God's absolute power, positioning themselves closer to the doctrine of hard determinism, whereas the Maturidīs stress the active role of humans in their free actions. More specifically, the dominant discourse among the Ash'arites is based on the idea that human power merely coincides with God's power, and thus, humans are passive rather than active in the actions for which they are held accountable. In contrast, the Maturidīs assert that humans themselves direct their given capacity of choice. The ongoing debate is whether the difference between these two Sunni schools is merely verbal or substantial. In this context, this study will examine the work "Maṭla'u'n-neyyireyn fīmā yeteʿallaḳu bi'l-ḳudreteyn" by the 18th-century Egyptian scholar Muhammad al-Sunbāwī, also known as Amīr al-Kabīr. This work, which addresses the concept of partial free will (juz'ī iradah), will be compared with notable contemporary works from the 18th century on the same subject. The study will aim to identify the points of convergence and divergence among different theological schools, specifically focusing on the contributions of al-Amīr al-Kabīr's work

This study investigated the potential of integrating Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Reality (VR) to enhance spatial perception and the design process in an architectural design studio setting. Undergraduate students at Karabük University designed the interior of a historical leather factory to be converted into a library using Revit and Unreal Engine 5. The findings revealed that VR technology significantly improved students' understanding of design details, spatial relationships, and the overall design process. Students were able to visualize their designs in a more immersive and interactive way, leading to more informed decision-making. Interactive elements, such as lighting controls and material selections, contributed to a more realistic and engaging experience. While visual realism played a role in the effectiveness of VR, the study also highlighted the importance of factors beyond visual realism, such as user experience and presence. These factors can influence how students interact with and learn from the VR environment. Future research is needed to further explore these factors and identify strategies for optimizing VR integration in design education. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of BIM and VR to transform architectural education by providing students with a more immersive and interactive learning experience. However, it is essential to consider factors beyond visual realism to ensure the effective integration of VR into the design processp.
