Asymmetric effects of economic growth, fossil fuel consumption, and financial development on carbon emissions in Ghana

    No full text
This research analyzes the impact of economic expansion, non-renewable energy consumption (NonREC), financial sector improvement, and carbon releases in Ghana. The study used yearly data from 1971 to 2014 and applied the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) method to examine the data. The NARDL approach facilitated the differentiation of variables into favorable and unfavorable adjustments by examining the short-and long-run effects. The results indicated that all the independent variables exhibited short-term asymmetries, while economic growth presented long-term asymmetry. Negative adjustments in economic expansion led to a decline in carbon releases in the long run but an increase in the short run. favorable and unfavorable adjustments in NonREC positively and negatively impact carbon releases in both the short and long term. Additionally, negative adjustments in financial development positively affected carbon releases in the long run. The cumulative dynamic multipliers graphs and impulse response function graphs illustrate the same impact pattern of the independent variables on carbon releases, confirming the findings' robustness. The study suggests implementing environmental policies in Ghana that promote renewable sources of energy and energy-conserving innovations to reduce environmental degradation. The findings recommend that the decision-maker prioritize effective environmental strategies like a green economy, renewable energy use, and energy-saving technologies. By adopting clean energy and implementing advanced technologies, sustainable economic growth can be achieved while preserving the environment and the ecosystem

The methods of resolution used outside the judiciary in resolving legal disputes are generally referred to as alternative dispute resolution methods, and mediation, which constitutes our subject of study, is one of these methods. Our study aims to compare the Mediation Institution in Legal Disputes in Türkiye and the Republic of North Macedonia (RNM) in the context of European Union (EU) policies. The Republic of North Macedonia, which is geographically and culturally close to Türkiye and has recently implemented mediation practices by following European Union policies, has not been the subject of a comparative study before in terms of mediation. Although both of these countries are influenced by the European Union in their legal regulations regarding mediation, there are some differences between their legislation. In our study, the legislation and practices of these two countries, which are in the process of harmonization with the European Union, will be examined comparatively in legal disputes; the similarities and differences between the two countries and the positive and negative aspects of the practice will be revealed

Use of party-appointed experts in international commercial and investment arbitration: Issues and possible solutions

    No full text
In this article, experts in international commercial and investment arbitration will be briefly explained on the basis of the appointing authority and the subject matter on which they provide their services. The legal aspects of experts will be summarised, taking into consideration sources in international arbitration and various jurisdictions. The problems that arise from the use of party-appointed experts are then briefly mentioned. Penultimately, the already proposed recommendations are to be stated and evaluated. Last but not least, the article concludes by asserting that a pre-agreed procedural flow for the creation of the expert opinion and concurrent examination is necessary to overcome the flaws resulting from the use of party-appointed experts that lead to the inefficiency of proceedings. To limit the subject, this article intentionally does not address the experts’ appointment and objection process and issues relating to the expert’s opinion, specifically, the assessment and weight as evidence

[ArticleInPress]Technological frames, examined through the lenses of social construction of technology (SCOT) and social cognition, are pivotal in organisational research. This study presents a comprehensive literature review from SCOT and social cognition perspectives, offering nuanced insights into how individuals perceive and interpret technology. Employing an exploratory qualitative approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews with professionals from diverse industries, chosen for their varied expertise. Through content analysis, we identified eight technological frame domains: affective and cognitive dimensions, application value, personal attitude, job-related factors, managerial and organisational influence, and colleagues’ impact. Our inquiry delves into the intricate factors shaping these frames, highlighting influences at both individual and organisational levels. Crucially, this study underscores the relevance of its findings for business analytics and technology management, illuminating cognitive and affective dimensions that significantly impact technology adoption and organisational outcomes

    Get PDF
Purpose: This study aims to investigate whether sustainability performance (SP) served as a safeguard for firm profitability (FP) and enhanced corporate resilience in emerging markets during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach: Using a sample of 1,091 firms in 25 emerging markets from 2017 to 2021, this study analyses the moderating role of SP on the relationship between FP and COVID-19 by using hierarchical linear modelling at three levels: (a) time-level; (b) firm-level; (c) country-level. Findings: The results indicate that during the years 2020–2021, emerging market firms with robust SP showed better FP in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings also indicate that all dimensions of sustainability, i.e. environmental, social and governance (ESG), have significantly affected the FP in the post-COVID period. Hence, adhering to ESG principles aids in alleviating adverse financial repercussions during times of crises. Practical implications: This study provides valuable insights for companies and policymakers for finding solutions that may assist them in improving SP globally and enduring crises resiliently. The findings are also relevant to institutional investors that consider SP as an investment criteria. Although the COVID-19 pandemic was temporary, the lessons learned could protect firms from future similar global crises. Originality/value: This study enhances the understanding of the contingency relationship between sustainability and financial performance by offering up-to-date empirical insights within the context of emerging markets during the pandemic. It demonstrates how different institutional frameworks influenced the SP–FP association during the crisis. Thus, this paper expands the understanding of crisis management literature and bridges the research void concerning the impact of SP on FP in an emerging market context
