Teaching ethics in teacher education: ICT-enhanced, case-based and active learning approach with continuous formative assessment
[ArticleInPress]The teaching of ethics in teacher education programs is crucial for fostering the moral and ethical development of prospective teachers and shaping them into ethical role models for future students. This study, employing qualitative case study research, gathered data from undergraduates in teacher education programs to explore the best approaches for ethics education. It found that combining digital and case-based pedagogical methods, fostering an open-minded attitude among lecturers, and implementing a blend of Socratic and active learning techniques leads to the most favorable outcomes. Additionally, con¬tinuous formative assessment throughout the academic year is essential. To cultivate a teaching workforce with strong ethical and moral values, undergraduate courses in ethics and morality should be thought-provoking, integrating real-life cases with a mix of digital and tangible resources. The ethics course lecturer should not only serve as a role model and exhibit a caring disposition but also use effective teaching methodologies. The pa¬per details key themes and categories for successful ethics instruction and offers specific recommendations

The politics of emotions, bio-political border practices and the question of (in)security on the Turkish political territorial borders
This paper conceptually and analytically delineates the operationand employment of discourses and the political emotions of fearand anxiety in the making, conception, and cartographicimagination of the contours of modern Turkey’s politicalterritorial boundaries. This study posits that the emergence andformation of the Turkish political territorial borders after thetraumatic and violent experience of the cataclysmic shrinking, collapse and disintegration of the Ottoman Empire continue toinfluence discourses, emotions, practices and policies of bordersecurity and policing. Borders and borderlands are not only siteswhere the state performs, exercises and displays its sovereign willand power in protecting national security, dignity, pride andhonor, but also sources and harbingers of fears, anxieties andontological (in)securities. In the context of the highly publicizedimmigration influx of Syrians, Iraqis, Afghanis and others intoTurkey, this paper argues that discourses and emotions of fear, anxiety and hate regained new currency and have becomeconsequential in the state’s eliciting of consent from the massesin instituting border walls, fences and harsh border policingpractices and policies on the borderlands and in cities across thecountry

Exploring the impact of behavioural factors and personality traits on private pension system participation: A machine learning approach
This study aims to investigate the effects of personality traits, in addition to basic financial literacy, private pension literacy and behavioural factors on Private Pension System (PPS) participation using machine learning algorithms. The PPS participation model was trained using both random forest and LightGBM algorithms, and the contributions of model inputs in the prediction of pension participation were interpreted using the Tree SHAP algorithms with swarmplots. The data employed in the empirical analysis is survey data collected from the Şırnak province of Türkiye with a sample size of 449. The findings of the study shows that: (i) PPS participation is more likely for females and middle-aged people; (ii) High basic financial literacy has a negative impact on PPS participation; (iii) Extraversion is the key personality trait affecting PPS participation; (iv) Advanced pension literacy has more impact on participation than simple pension literacy: (v) Present-fatalistic tendency is key behavioural factor and it negatively affects PPS; (vi) Present-hedonistic, conscientiousness, future-time orientation, and locus of control tendencies increase PPS participation. Furthermore, the distribution of colours in LightGBM has a greater degree of uniformity in both directions compared with the random forest algorithm. Finally, to increase PPS participation, the results of the study suggest the implementation of the following policy measures: Tailored pension literacy programmes can help to increase pension participation rates. Incentives should be created to prevent narrow-minded behaviour and establish a sense of protection and control around PPS, targeting middle-aged individuals and women
Exploring the effective language teaching components from teachers’ point of view: A community of inquiry perspective
Our research article explores teachers’ perceptions of components of effective language teaching from a community of inquiry (CoI) perspective. 20 teachers completed a narrative frame, 15 of whom participated in a semi-structured interview in which they discussed the factors contributing to effective teaching. The thematic analysis of the data employing the underpinning theoretical framework of the study revealed nine sub-themes in three CoI themes. The sub-themes in the teaching presence theme were classroom dynamic and discourse, classroom and learning management, and evaluation and assessment. The emergence of meaningful learning, critical thinking, and students’ engagement was observed in cognitive presence, and learning environment, sociocultural peculiarities, and positive relationships emerged in social presence. The findings of this study may assist teachers, teacher educators, and policymakers in improving their understanding of effective teaching and its components and planning, designing, and implementing accordingly
An activity theoretic exploration of the causes of language learners’ misbehavior: Teachers’ belief in focus
This study attempts to explore the teachers’ beliefs on the causes of learners’ misbehavior in language classrooms. To do so, 23 language teachers completed a narrative frame in which they discussed a misbehavior experience they had in the class and why they thought it happened; they, then, attended semi-structured interviews where they discussed their experiences regarding learners’ misbehavior. A thematic analysis was employed and the data was analyzed with an eye on the study’s theoretical underpinning, i.e., Activity Theory (AT). The results indicated that there are different sources of misbehavior on different interconnected components of AT. In the “tool” component, the emergent themes were materials constraints, technological challenges, and hobbies interventions. In the “rules”, some themes such as teaching methodology, socio-cultural norms, and political, and ideological intolerance or disobedience emerged. It was in the “community” component of AT that the data revealed social phenomena, colleagues and authorities, and learners heterogeneity. Finally, in the “division of labor” the emerged themes were overwhelming responsibilities, family issues, and executives’ dereliction. The findings suggest a new look at language learners’ misbehavior and inform teacher education programs in which teachers are trained on this issue to manage learning in their classrooms effectively

What determines public attitudes toward immigration in the Middle East: An analysis at the individual level
[ArticleInPress]Purpose: Surveys in Europe show that immigration is more of a challenge than an opportunity for a significant number of people. However, little attention is given to attitudes toward immigration in the Middle East. This paper examines the effects of personal values and religiosity on the anti-immigration attitudes of citizens in the Middle East and North African countries. Design/methodology/approach: Utilizing data from the World Values Survey, we analyze how personal values and religiosity affect anti-immigration attitudes in nine Middle Eastern countries. The data covers individual-level data of 9 MENA countries from the WVS Round 7 (2017–2022). Factor analysis is applied as a data reduction method. Afterward, an OLS regression analysis is conducted on the pooled data. Findings: Anti-immigration attitudes increase with age, education, and religiosity. Personal values such as national pride, support for nationals, and belongingness to one’s country significantly affect anti-immigration attitudes. Furthermore, the importance of religion as a measure of religiosity was found to be positively associated with anti-immigration attitudes. Originality/value: This paper contributes to underexplored literature by investigating how individual-level determinants, such as demographic indicators, personal values, and religious factors, shape anti-immigration attitudes in the MENA context, distinct from European dynamics
