Editorial: Technology-enhanced language teacher education: Opportunities, challenges, and futures

    No full text
This editorial introduces the Special Issue on technology-enhanced language teacher education (LTE), situating current debates and mapping opportunities, challenges, and futures. We clarify what counts as “technology” in LTE (from CALL, MALL, RALL, to virtual platforms and generative AI) and foreground digital literacies, ethics, and equity as preconditions for meaningful integration. The collected articles span conceptual, empirical, and review work: a five-principle framework positioning technology as a partner in reflective practice; teachers’ perspectives on GenAI in Hong Kong classrooms; a reconceptualisation of TPACK that embeds affective knowledge; a bibliometric mapping of GenAI-related LTE scholarship; a critical typology of teachers’ perspectives about AI; and a narrative inquiry into technological triggers of teacher immunity and coping startegies. Together, these contributions recenter teacher agency, identity, and well-being in technology-mediated contexts and argue for context-sensitive, ethically informed design for integrating technology in LTE. We close by outlining research trajectories that prioritise teacher voice, sustained professional learning, and principled, locally responsive uses of AI, globally

Today, when traditional forms of socialization have evolved into digital environments, digital games are not only a means of entertainment but also play an active role in the processes of identity construction, developing a sense of belonging, and establishing interpersonal relationships. In this context, this study examines how digital games function in social interaction, the contribution of online gaming communities to social ties, and the effects of gaming experiences on face-to-face relationships. The research was conducted through semi-structured interviews with 14 adults aged 20 to 45 who play digital games, and the data obtained were evaluated using thematic analysis. As a result of the interviews with the participants, it was observed that digital games have the potential to strengthen social ties, reduce feelings of loneliness, and offer new socialization opportunities to individuals. However, it was also found that the gaming experience had different effects on individuals' daily routines, perceptions of loneliness, and time management. Among the findings, it was found that games can facilitate socialization as well as foster a sense of social isolation from time to time. Additionally, it has been observed that some gaming habits may lead to distancing from face-to-face relationships or time management problems. This study aims to shed light on the transformative power of game culture on socialization by revealing the multi-layered effects of digital games on social life from an adult perspective. It also contributes to the literature in understanding the social identity, belonging, and interaction practices of adults. The findings reveal that digital games should be considered not only as an individual but also as a social and cultural practice.

Among these, the work titled Sharḥ Mukhtaṣar al-Qudūrī by Abū Naṣr al-Aqṭaʿ occupies a significant place. The value of this commentary is further enhanced by the fact that Abū Naṣr al-Aqṭaʿ was a direct student of al-Qudūrī and that his work is considered the first known commentary on al-Mukhtaṣar. This thesis, which focuses on the aforementioned work of Abū Naṣr al-Aqṭaʿ, is composed of five chapters. The introduction discusses the significance and scope of the topic, the sources utilized, and a review of the existing literature. The second chapter provides the biographies of Abū Naṣr al-Aqṭaʿ and Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Qudūrī, and attempts to determine the place of al-Aqṭaʿ's commentary among other interpretations of Mukhtaṣar al-Qudūrī. The third chapter analyzes the sources of the commentary and its internal classification. The fourth chapter offers an analysis of the content of the work. The findings obtained throughout the study are presented in the conclusion

Background Previous studies have established a link between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and risky internet use (RIU); however, the processes underlying this association remain unclear. This study examines whether a proportion of the association between ADHD and RIU was shared with social skills. Methods The sample included 142 children aged 6-12 years (65% female, M = 8.5, SD = 1.7), comprising 71 children diagnosed with ADHD and 71 controls without ADHD. Standardized assessments were administered to measure RIU and social skills. Path analysis was employed to evaluate the association among ADHD, social skills, and RIU. Key demographic variables, including gender, birth timing, age of speech onset, household income, parental education, and number of siblings, were controlled for in the analyses. Results An ADHD diagnosis was significantly associated with reduced social skills (beta = - 1.68, p < 0.001), and reduced social skills was strongly linked to higher levels of RIU (beta = - 0.57, p = 0.004). The direct association between ADHD and RIU was not statistically significant (beta = - 0.52, p = 0.169). However, a significant indirect effect was observed, indicating that ADHD-RIU link was shared with reduced social skills (beta = 0.96, p = 0.004). Conclusions The findings indicate that a significant proportion of the association between ADHD and RIU was shared with social skills, emphasizing the importance of social skills as a potential factor for RIU risk in children with ADHD. Interventions that focus on enhancing social skills may support efforts to address RIU in this population

Reducing food insecurity in sub-Saharan Africa: The role of institutions and financial stability

    No full text
Achieving food security (SGD 2) is a central theme in promoting overall well-being, economic growth, and maintaining peace and security. In the efforts to achieve sustainable development goals, Sub-Saharan African countries are still burdened with widespread food insecurity, poverty, and inequality. These bottlenecksare further worsened by institutional inefficiencies and unstable financial systems. This study investigates not only the role institutions and stable financial systems play in the reduction of food insecurity and its four components but also how poverty and well-being in SSA affect food security. The study employed data from 28 SSA countries from 2011 to 2021 which was analyzed using a two-step system GMM estimator. The results show that although financial stability is insignificant relative to food security and utilization of food, it increases the affordability and sustainability of food. Quality institution on the other hand significantly increases food security. Furthermore, well-being increases food security, affordability, utilization, and sustainability, while poverty reduces food security, accessibility, utilization, and sustainability. The study suggests that strengthening financial systems to provide financial access and security will reduce poverty and support the achievement of SDG 2. Additionally, policies to improve people’s well-being and further the existing institutions will provide a stronger foundation for SSA countries to achieve SDG 2

Addressing the current environmental challenges requires optimizing climate actions and understanding the complex relationships among them. This paper aims to provide insights into how public investment in renewable energy influences various dimensions of climate change, including emissions, efficiency, renewable energy deployment, and policy effectiveness. This study seeks to explore the causal connection between public investment in renewable energy and the Climate Change Performance Indicator (CPI) from 2007 to 2017, utilizing data provided by German Watch. The method used is Dumitrescu and Hurlin’s (2012) Granger Causality. The study unveils a unidirectional causality from Renewable Energy Investment (REI) to climate change performance. Additionally, it emphasizes the critical role of energy efficiency in attracting investments in renewable energy. Surprisingly, the study finds that REI influences the quality of climate policy. Furthermore, the study identifies a bi-directional causality between a renewable energy share and REI. The contribution of the paper lies in its analysis of public investment in renewable energy, covering areas beyond just public finance for R&D in renewable energy, as also exploring the causal link between this investment and CPI. It offers policymakers insights on how financial governmental interventions can effectively drive climate action

Al-Ghazali’s principle of trust (Amanah) as a framework for ethical AI governance in organizations

    Get PDF
In a technology-driven, materialistic world, the need for timeless wisdom and spiritual-moral values becomes increasingly evident. This paper aims to provide a solid moral foundation for modern ethical frameworks of AI governance by drawing on the prominent Muslim theologian and philosopher, Al-Ghazali’s principle of Amanah in ethical leadership as a tool to establish trust in AI systems and technologies. The research is theoretical and qualitative, utilizing secondary data from journal articles and books. Through a literature review and analysis, the study explores the role of Al-Ghazali’s teachings in shaping ethical AI governance through ethical leadership. The findings reveal that incorporating Amanah, a core trait of ethical leadership from an Islamic perspective, into AI governance frameworks can effectively balance spiritual values with technological advancements. This approach offers a pathway to achieving business goals in a more humanistic, ethical, and sustainable manner. This theoretical paper has some limitations, primarily in lacking empirical evidence and focusing only on one principle of Al-Ghazali’s ethical legacy; therefore, a more comprehensive study would help to enrich the research with empirical evidence and practical implications

AI integration into language education and teacher identity: An ecological perspective

    Get PDF
This study explores how the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools into language education can influence language teachers’ identity from an ecological perspective. To do so, 16 teachers were selected based on purposeful sampling and completed a narrative frame. To corroborate data, seven of them (based on the richness of their narrative frames) attended a semi-structured interview in which they discussed the integration of AI in their classes and how it impacted their identity. The semi-structured interviews were translated and transcribed and along with the narrative frames were analyzed by employing thematic analysis. The findings of this study revealed that AI integration in language education had a significant impact on participating teachers’ identity and shaped their identity at different ecological layers of micro-pedagogical, meso-institutional, and macro-societal. These findings may assist teachers and teacher educators in raising awareness about AI integration into language education and how it can construct language teacher identity

The impact of job autonomy on employee creativity: Examining perceived supervisor support as a mediator and job difficulty as a moderator

    Get PDF
[ArticleInPress]Research indicates that job autonomy (JA) plays a pivotal role in enhancing employee creativity (EC); however, our understanding of the underlying mechanisms facilitating this connection is still limited. To address this lacuna, we draw on self-determination theory, which argues that perceived supervisory support (PSS) may act as a mediator. Thus, this study explores how JA enhances creativity through PSS. Furthermore, we explore the moderating role of the job difficulty level on the relationship between JA and EC. Conducting a cross-sectional survey involving 561 employees in the Turkish media sector, our study utilizes structural equation modelling in AMOS and employs moderator analysis in PROCESS Macro. The results unveil that JA not only directly positively impacts EC but also exerts an indirect influence through the mediating role of PSS. Furthermore, our findings highlight the moderating effect of job difficulty level, indicating a negative impact on the relationship between JA and EC. Among the examined control variables, including gender, organizational tenure and sectoral tenure, it is notable that sectoral tenure emerges as the sole factor significantly influencing EC. These results have significant implications for the development of innovative management strategies and human resources policies tailored to the unique needs of media companies. The study underscores the importance of understanding the intricate dynamics between JA, PSS and job difficulty levels in fos tering a creative work environment

Examining the determinants of consumer perception of inflation [Article]

    Get PDF
This study investigates the determinants of consumer inflation perception in 2023 using survey data from households in Morocco, Türkiye, and Italy. By integrating psychological variables such as media influence, peer influence, memory, and past inflation perceptions with socio-demographic factors (age, gender, education, professional status, and living standards), this paper offers a multidimensional view of how inflation is perceived. Using both multiple regression and ordered probit models, the analysis reveals common predictors-education, income level, inflation knowledge, and media exposure-while also identifying distinct country-specific patterns. In Türkiye, peer and media influence are dominant; in Morocco, consumer sentiment and memory play a stronger role; in Italy, media and memory are most influential. This study contributes to the literature by being among the first to systematically compare inflation perception determinants across countries using both socioeconomic and psychological variables. It demonstrates that inflation perception is not only an economic reaction but also a socially and cognitively embedded phenomenon, shaped by contextual and cultural differences. The findings offer important implications for inflation communication strategies: policymakers should tailor media messaging, financial education, and peer-led interventions to improve public understanding and trust in monetary policy
