‘ … Like white light going through a prism’: A metaphorical exploration of multilingual education from teachers’ perspectives
Various characteristics of multilingual educational settings have been investigated from diverse sources thus far; however, the metaphorical representation of these unique mini-societies has been overlooked and warrants greater attention. Therefore, grounded in a metaphorical standpoint, this study aimed to explore the underlying factors involved in multilingual education by analyzing teachers’ metaphors about it. To collect data, 67 teachers from a university in Türkiye, chosen through snowball sampling, completed a metaphor about multilingual education. Of these, 12 teachers participated in semi-structured interviews to elaborate on the metaphors they generated. Employing systematic metaphor analysis, the metaphors were categorized into six distinctive themes: travel, residence, edibles, art and entertainment, artifact, and career. Then, the thematic analysis of interview data indicated unique features of multilingual classrooms embedded within the provided metaphors and their underlying dimensions. These findings call for educational reforms in multilingual education for teachers, teacher educators, and policymakers by unveiling the unique features of this specific educational context
Unveiling the transformative influence of ChatGPT on service sector
The study examines the implementation of a new technological setting in the business environment, focusing on the service sectors that are most likely to be affected by ChatGPT. Initially potential use cases in the selected sectors are identified, then the use case-specific efficacy of ChatGPT-4 in generating coherent responses by devising a series of questions are assessed. According to the results, some service sectors will be affected from ChatGPT more than the others as it influences managerial, and operational work differently at the strategic, and functional levels. In ecommerce and digital marketing, financial and healthcare sectors, ChatGPT provides directly or potentially applicable outputs, beyond sole suggestions. In education and management consulting sectors, the outputs are directly applicable. In the IT and cybersecurity sectors, the majority of outputs are definitive solutions, while in the tourism, travel, and hospitality sectors, many outputs serve as suggestions that guide users toward potential solutions. The study also provides valuable insights about use of ChatGPT in overcoming the challenges faced by firms in the service sector
[Book Review]: "Varieties of Nationalism: Communities, Narratives, Identities"
In this short but intriguing and much-needed book, Harris Mylonas and MayaTudor provide a guide and framework for how to conduct rigorous comparativeand cumulative research into the various consequences of nationalism throughtime and across countries. Noting that the nationalism scholarship lacks foremostthe conceptual clarity that characterizes other fields of comparative study likedemocratization (rather surprisingly given nationalism’s enduring relevancearound the world), the authors systematically break down the concept of nation-alism into the five most significant dimensions identified in the literature – “eliteand popular fragmentation of national communities; ascriptiveness and thicknessof national narratives; and salience of national identities” (11) – and review someof the influential works in the literature that causally link each of these dimen-sions with a diverse range of outcomes such as regime type, refugee policies, state capacity, political stability and others. They conclude by encouraging scho-lars to explicitly situate their research puzzle along one of the five identifieddimensions of nationalism (62) and to define and operationalize that dimen-sion(s) “in a clear, consistent manner” (14). Only in this way, the authorscontend, can meaningful comparative and cumulative knowledge in the nation-alism scholarship be built
Assessing and weighting key barriers to sustainable manufacturing in Türkiye
The rapid depletion of natural resources, environmental pollution through harmful chemical waste, and the continuous rise in greenhouse gas emissions have made it imperative for industries worldwide to adopt sustainable manufacturing methods. While such methods are increasingly implemented in developed countries, businesses in developing economies face significant challenges in adopting sustainable manufacturing practices. In a developing country like Türkiye, various factors contribute to these challenges. To address this issue, the aim of this research was to prioritize the key barriers to adopting sustainable practices in the Turkish manufacturing industry. The Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA) method, a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) technique, was employed in this study due to its ease of use, minimal requirement for pairwise comparisons, and ability to enhance expert collaboration in the decision-making process. Four experts evaluated a total of 39 sub-criteria under the main categories of Technological (T), Knowledge & Learning (KL), Social & Environmental (SE), Organizational (O), Economic & Managerial (EM), and Supply Chain Management (SCM). The findings revealed that the top five key barriers in the Turkish manufacturing industry are: (1) lack of awareness of sustainability concepts (KL1), (2) unclear or weak business case and vision (O6), (3) lack of locally conducted awareness programs (KL2), (4) lack of knowledge or training for sustainable manufacturing (KL5), and (5) lack of support from top management (O2). For future studies, it is essential to investigate the effectiveness of targeted strategies designed to address these barriers and facilitate the successful integration of sustainability into manufacturing processes
The impact of operational performance of full-service carrier airlines on stock prices during COVID-19
This study aimed to examine the impact of operational performance indicators of full-service airlines on stock prices during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The study used monthly data for the period between 2019 and the third quarter of 2024 for Turkish Airlines (THY), Lufthansa and American Airlines, representing fullservice airlines in Türkiye, Europe and the USA. In the study, the effects of variables such as Flight Seat Kilometer (ASK), Revenue Passenger Kilometer (RPK), Load Factor- occupancy rate (LF), Passengers Numbers (PN) and Flights Numbers (FN) on stock prices as indicators of operational performance of selected airlines were analyzed. Methodologically, the data were examined and visualized using the R software using the fixed effects panel data model together with time series econometric models. Data were analyzed with SPSS-22. The study concluded that the Load Factor (FK), one of the operational performance variables, had a positive and statistically significant effect for all airlines during the specified period, while the other factors had no effect. Additionally, it was also revealed that during the pandemic period, the stock prices of the airlines in question were strongly affected by their past values. Moreover, it was pointed out that the pandemic had a short-term effect on stock prices and that it did not have a statistically significant effect in the long term. Furthermore, it was found that the operational performance indicators of all airlines decreased during the Corona, and while the performance declines of other airlines, except for THY, continued after Covid, THY's operational performance increased and stood out positively from the others
Multidimensional analysis of investment priorities for circular economy with Quantum Spherical Fuzzy Hybrid Modeling
Circular economy aims recycling in the production process instead of destroying the products. With the help of this situation, waste can be considered in the remanufacturing process so that the rate of consumption of natural resources can be decreased. It is necessary to focus on certain investment issues to achieve a circular economy, but all investments have some risks. Hence, the economies should make priority analysis to take efficient actions. Investment priorities are identified to have circular economy. A novel fuzzy decision-making model has been created for this purpose. In the first stage, balanced scorecard criteria are evaluated with the help of multi stepwise weight assessment ratio analysis (M-SWARA). Later, the multidimensional investment priorities of circular economy are ranked. In this context, elimination and choice translating reality (ELECTRE) approach is taken into consideration. The main contribution of the paper is that a new methodology is created by the name of M-SWARA. Owing to these new improvements, cause and effect relationship among the items can be analyzed. It is identified that financial issues play the most crucial role for investments to improve circular economy. On the other side, it is also concluded that remanufacturing is the most significant investment alternative to develop circular economy. For the sustainability of the investment to improve circular economy, necessary financial analysis should be performed. With the help of this situation, these substances can be reintroduced into the production process in the form of raw materials. With the increase of remanufacturing, it will be possible to reduce waste and save scarce material resources

Dijitalleşmenin gazeteciliğe etkileri: Türk spor gazeteciliğinde değişim ve dönüşümler
This study explores the transformative impact of digitalisation on sports journalism, with a specific focus on Turkish media. Historically, sports journalism evolved through traditional platforms such as newspapers, radio, and television, each shaping how sports were consumed and perceived. The advent of digital platforms has revolutionized this landscape, offering interactive and audience-centered experiences while challenging conventional norms and ethics. In Türkiye, digital platforms like YouTube and social media have become essential outlets for sports content, integrating real-time updates, fan-driven narratives, and personalized consumption. Text mining and content analysis were employed to examine the practices of prominent Turkish sports journalists and their interactions with audiences. The findings reveal that digitalisation has enhanced accessibility and engagement but also has amplified issues such as sensationalism, misinformation, and a narrow focus on football. The study highlights the hybrid nature of Turkish sports journalism, where traditional practices coexist with digital innovations. While digitalisation presents opportunities for inclusiveness and innovation, it also necessitates addressing persistent ethical and structural challenges. This research contributes to understanding the evolving dynamics of sports journalism in the digital age, emphasizing the need for a balance between technological advancements and professional integrity.
This study examines how climate change disproportionately affects women, focusing on the African region, where economic and gender inequalities are most visible. The research aims to explore the reasons behind why disadvantaged groups, particularly women, are more affected by climate change. Using a news narrative analysis method, the study considers news texts as primary sources that reflect social perceptions and facts. This method helps analyse how climate change and gender inequality are portrayed in both local and international media. The research concentrates on countries around the Sahara Desert, known as Sahel Region. These countries face severe impacts from climate change, including drought, floods, soil poisoning, rising temperatures, and desertification, which affect the agriculture and livestock sectors where women are predominantly employed. As a result, women experience compounded effects of gender and economic inequalities. The study is divided into four parts: concepts, methodology, findings and discussion. It uses a feminist political ecology approach to understand how climate change intersects with gender, race, and class dynamics. The findings reveal that women, who already face global inequality, are further burdened by climate change in the African context. The study suggests that Turkish academia should conduct more research on climate change and gender inequality in Africa and recommends practical solutions such as afforestation projects to combat desertification in the region.
