Innovative Driver Monitoring Systems and On-Board-Vehicle Devices in a Smart-Road Scenario Based on the Internet of Vehicle Paradigm: A Literature and Commercial Solutions Overview
In recent years, the growing number of vehicles on the road have exacerbated issues related to safety and traffic congestion. However, the advent of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) holds the potential to transform mobility, enhance traffic management and safety, and create smarter, more interconnected road networks. This paper addresses key road safety concerns, focusing on driver condition detection, vehicle monitoring, and traffic and road management. Specifically, various models proposed in the literature for monitoring the driver’s health and detecting anomalies, drowsiness, and impairment due
to alcohol consumption are illustrated. The paper describes vehicle condition monitoring
architectures, including diagnostic solutions for identifying anomalies, malfunctions, and
instability while driving on slippery or wet roads. It also covers systems for classifying driving style, as well as tire and emissions monitoring. Moreover, the paper provides a
detailed overview of the proposed traffic monitoring and management solutions, along
with systems for monitoring road and environmental conditions, including the sensors
used and the Machine Learning (ML) algorithms implemented. Finally, this review also
presents an overview of innovative commercial solutions, illustrating advanced devices for driver monitoring, vehicle condition assessment, and traffic and road management
A Multivariate Approach for Modeling Spazio-temporale Agrometeorogical Variables
One of the main issues facing agrometeorological studies involves measuring and modeling the evolution of different environmental variables over time; this often requires a dense monitoring network. Spatio-temporal geostatistics has the potential to provide techniques and tools to estimate the spatio-temporal multiple covariance function and define an appropriate multivariate correlation function capable of reliable predictions. This paper presents a spatio-temporal multivariate geostatistical modeling approach based on the joint diagonalization of the empirical covariance matrix evaluated at different spatio-temporal lags. The possibility to consider a reduced number of uncorrelated variables (lower than the number of observed variables) and separately model the spatio-temporal evolution of these uncorrelated components represents a substantial simplification for multivariate modeling. A space–time linear coregionalization model (ST-LCM) with appropriate parametric models for the latent components was fitted to the matrix-valued covariance function estimated for five relevant agrometeorological variables, including evapotranspiration, minimum and maximum humidity, maximum temperature, and precipitation. The analyses highlight how to identify space–time components and choose the corresponding model by evaluating some characteristics of these components, such as symmetry, separability, and type of non-separability. The predictive results of this multivariate study will be of interest for agriculture, in particular for addressing drought emergencies
A Scalable Framework for Sensor Data Ingestion and Real-Time Processing in Cloud Manufacturing
Cloud Manufacturing enables the integration of geographically distributed manufacturing resources through advanced Cloud Computing and IoT technologies. This paradigm promotes the development of scalable and adaptable production systems. However, existing frameworks face challenges related to scalability, resource orchestration, and data security, particularly in rapidly evolving decentralized manufacturing settings. This study presents a novel nine-layer architecture designed specifically to address these issues. Central to this framework is the use of Apache Kafka for robust, high-throughput data ingestion, and Apache Spark Streaming to enhance real-time data processing. This framework is underpinned by a microservice-based architecture that ensures a high scalability and reduced latency. Experimental validation using sensor data from the UCI Machine Learning Repository demonstrated substantial improvements in processing efficiency and throughput compared with conventional frameworks. Key components, such as RabbitMQ, contribute to low-latency performance, whereas Kafka ensures data durability and supports real-time application. Additionally, the in-memory data processing of Spark Streaming enables rapid and dynamic data analysis, yielding actionable insights. The experimental results highlight the potential of the framework to enhance operational efficiency, resource utilization, and data security, offering a resilient solution suited to the demands of modern industrial applications. This study underscores the contribution of the framework to advancing Cloud Manufacturing by providing detailed insights into its performance, scalability, and applicability to contemporary manufacturing ecosystems

Double Visions: Eastern Mysticism in Kipling’s "Kim" and Forster’s "A Passage to India"
This article examines Rudyard Kipling’s Kim and E.M. Forster’s A Passage to India from the point of view of the religious elements, deriving from Buddhism and Hinduism respectively, contained within them. What is entailed by the clash of cultures depicted in both works is a confrontation between different conceptions of the world, and more especially of the value of action within that world. If the story of the Buddha, and more particularly of the Bodhisattva, provides Kipling with a metaphor for the complementary quests of Kim and the lama in Kim, it is I suggest one of the cardinal religious texts of Vedantic Hinduism, the Bhagavad Gita, that provides the metaphorical underpinnings of A Passage to India
