Journalistic Voice: The Performance of the Interventionist Role
This chapter reports findings from the Journalistic Voice domain, describing how journalists around the world use different indicators of interventionism when reporting the news. In our analysis, we split the indicators into two main categories: those related to the content of a news item and those related to the style. Our findings show that professional autonomy does not necessarily point to more interventionism, while lack of autonomy does not necessarily prevent the presence of this role in the news, as the journalistic voice may be used for different purposes. Still, we found that democratic regime and a high level of autonomy do correlate to the presence of content-related interventionism, while the style-related indicators of the interventionist role can be traced in all types of regimes. Also, newspapers’ audience orientation only affects style-related indicators, while there is no significant difference between the popular and elite press when it comes to content-related indicators
Se emplean los operadores booleanos “AND” y “OR” y como ecuación de búsqueda “sprain of ankle” AND ostheopathy OR “ostheopatic manipulation”.
Journalism and Civil Society: Key to Data Journalism in Argentina
There is no tradition of quantitative journalism in Argentina. Mostly local NGOs have led initiatives for access of information in the last decades, which in many cases were the background of some articles in mainstream media. So data journalism in the country is usually associated with public journalism. The exception is La Nación Data, a special investigative unit in a local newspaper, identified worldwide as an important reference in data journalism. In recent years, La Nación has been recognized for many innovative contributions to digital journalism. The investigation based on leaked emails from the minister of transportation in 2010 was a key moment for the newspaper, considered since that moment a powerhouse of Latin American data journalism. But it is still the only media in the country with a data journalism unit. Many factors can explain the limited development of this journalism model in other media, especially the La Nación Data’s success and local recognition of its contribution to society and profession. From a social point of view, we can mention the tradition of secrecy in politics, the scarcity of open databases and the lack of a law of access of information till 2016. But the professional culture is the main obstacle. In general, watchdog journalism was a declining model in the last decades due to hostile political climates, weak professionalization and lack of resources in newsrooms to develop investigative reporting. Additionally, data journalism requires a quantitative perspective and an interaction between programmers and journalists. We propose to analyze in detail the factors of social context and journalistic culture in order to explain the situation of data journalism in Argentina
Taking Advantage of the Selectivity of Histone Deacetylases and Phosphodiesterase Inhibitors to Design Better Therapeutic Strategies to Treat Alzheimer's Disease
The discouraging results with therapies for Alzheimer's disease (AD) in clinical trials, highlights the urgent need to adopt new approaches. Like other complex diseases, it is becoming clear that AD therapies should focus on the simultaneous modulation of several targets implicated in the disease. Recently, using reference compounds and the first-in class CM-414, we demonstrated that the simultaneous inhibition of histone deacetylases [class I histone deacetylases (HDACs) and HDAC6] and phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) has a synergistic therapeutic effect in AD models. To identify the best inhibitory balance of HDAC isoforms and PDEs that provides a safe and efficient therapy to combat AD, we tested the compound CM-695 in the Tg2576 mouse model of this disease. CM-695 selectively inhibits HDAC6 over class I HDAC isoforms, which largely overcomes the toxicity associated with HDAC class 1 inhibition. Furthermore, CM-695 inhibits PDE9, which is expressed strongly in the brain and has been proposed as a therapeutic target for AD. Chronic treatment of aged Tg2576 mice with CM-695 ameliorates memory impairment and diminishes brain Aβ, although its therapeutic effect was no longer apparent 4 weeks after the treatment was interrupted. An increase in the presence of 78-KDa glucose regulated protein (GRP78) and heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) chaperones may underlie the therapeutic effect of CM-695. In summary, chronic treatment with CM-695 appears to reverse the AD phenotype in a safe and effective manner. Taking into account that AD is a multifactorial disorder, the multimodal action of these compounds and the different events they affect may open new avenues to combat AD
Targeting CB1 and GPR55 Endocannabinoid Receptors as a Potential Neuroprotective Approach for Parkinson's Disease
Cannabinoid CB1 receptors (CB1R) and the GPR55 receptor are expressed in striatum and are potential targets in the therapy of Parkinson's disease (PD), one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases in developed countries. The aim of this paper was to address the potential of ligands acting on those receptors to prevent the action of a neurotoxic agent, MPP+, that specifically affects neurons of the substantia nigra due to uptake via the dopamine DAT transporter. The SH-SY5Y cell line model was used as it expresses DAT and, therefore, is able to uptake MPP+ that inhibits complex I of the respiratory mitochondrial chain and leads to cell death. Cells were transfected with cDNAs coding for either or both receptors. Receptors in cotransfected cells formed heteromers as indicated by the in situ proximity ligation assays. Cell viability was assayed by oxygen rate consumption and by the bromide-based MTT method. Assays of neuroprotection using two concentrations of MPP+ showed that cells expressing receptor heteromers were more resistant to the toxic effect. After correction by effects on cell proliferation, the CB1R antagonist, SR141716, afforded an almost full neuroprotection in CB1R-expressing cells even when a selective agonist, ACEA, was present. In contrast, SR141716 was not effective in cells expressing CB1/GPR55 heteromeric complexes. In addition, an agonist of GPR55, CID1792197, did not enhance neuroprotection in GPR55-expressing cells. These results show that neurons expressing heteromers are more resistant to cell death but question the real usefulness of CB1R, GPR55, and their heteromers as targets to afford PD-related neuroprotection
Metacognitive beliefs and emotional dysregulation have a specific contribution on worry and the emotional symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder.
Metacognitive beliefs and emotional dysregulation are theoretically relevant and empirically supported variables for explaining worry and emotional symptoms in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). These variables are proposed in alternative models of GAD and tested in separate research. This study first examined the relationships between metacognitive beliefs and emotional dysregulation and, second, analyzed the specific contribution of these variables to worry and emotional GAD symptoms. Correlation analyses revealed participants (n = 768) who had dysfunctional beliefs about their cognitive functioning also tended to have more difficulties with emotional regulation. Structural equation analyses revealed metacognitive beliefs and emotional dysregulation have a specific contribution to worry and emotional symptoms in GAD. We found strong correlations between metacognitive beliefs and worry, and between emotional dysregulation and emotional GAD symptoms. Moreover, the associations of metacognitive beliefs with worry and emotional symptoms remain significant when the effect of emotional dysregulation was accounted for. However, the association between emotional dysregulation and worry become non-significant when the effect of metacognitive beliefs was controlled for. These results help clarify the unique contribution of metacognition and emotional dysregulation on GAD and suggest that both variables should be integrated into a more comprehensive model and therapy for this anxiety disorder
The challenge of making this world a better place: Analyzing the chivalrous quality of the quixoteism motive
Quixoteism is a motive that leads people to undertake challenging actions as an instrumental goal toward an ultimate goal of improving the welfare of the world. The present research tests whether the activation of a Quixoteism motive increases a person’s willingness to perform extraordinary helping behaviors. In Study 1 (N = 66), the centrality of values linked to Quixoteism (i.e., the Transcendent-Change Constellation, TCC) predicted actual commitment to help, but only when this behavior was challenging. In Study 2 (N = 175), the centrality of TCC measured one month earlier was associated with a preference for challenging helping behaviors, but only when the ultimate goal of Quixoteism was previously primed (i.e., awareness of worldwide problems). This is the first work to focus on analyzing the association between Quixoteism and behaviors that involve a challenging helping (chivalrous) action
ABSTRACT Background: Padel is a racquet sport practiced regularly in Spain and its game characteristics make it a harmful sport for joints such as knees, lumbar, elbows and shoulders. The shoulder injury causes 13.1% overall pádel injuries and 40 to 50% of those people still having symptoms after 6-12 months, being the sign of impingement the most common pathology. Manual therapy (TM) and exercise are the first line of treatment despite the increasing incidence of surgeries. Methods: Randomized clinical trial with 2 intervention groups comparing how the use of TM + supervised exercise affects variables such as pain (VAS), disability questionnaire (SPADI), range of motion (ROM) and muscle strength, compared with the supervised isolated exercise for amateur padel players with shoulder pain during sports practice. Results: 20 subjects completed the intervention and were analyzed obtaining an average age of 35.60 ± 11.61 years and a BMI of 23.56 ± 2.87 kg / m2. The main variables (EVA, SPADI, ROM and muscle strength) did not obtain significant differences between groups. However, they improved intragroup between pre and post intervention. Conclusion: Both therapies provide statistically significant improvement in all variables without stopping sports practice, but the combination therapy is not statistically significant compared to supervised exercise isolated in amateur paddle players with shoulder pain despite having better results
