    Are smartphones moving towards commodization? Evidence from the Italian market

    Framing of the research: The global smartphone market may be entering a phase of commoditization, where consumers are well-informed, perceive products as (almost) interchangeable, face low switching costs, and make rational choices. Purpose of the paper: This paper investigates whether the Italian smartphone market can be considered commoditized by examining the role of individual characteristics, product attributes, and usage motivations on smartphone customer satisfaction. It also explores how these three dimensions influence the average smartphone lifespan and the number of smartphones owned, which are the main drivers of new sales in saturated markets. Methodology: We conducted an exploratory analysis on a representative sample of Italian users (N= 816). The items concerning respondents’ lifestyles, smartphone features, and usage motivations were reduced through Exploratory Factor Analysis. Hierarchical multiple linear regressions identified the predictors of the three investigated consumption outcomes. Findings: Customer satisfaction appears to be mainly driven by basic and economic product attributes and pragmatic usage motivations, suggesting a trend towards commoditization. Differently, smartphone substitution/duplication is more likely for heavy social media users (a lifestyle component), driven by symbolic and hedonic motivations. Thus, there is a portion of market demand that remains ‘noncommoditized’. Research limitations: The empirical analysis is limited to the Italian context and adults over 18 years, overlooking the younger generations and the differences in sociocultural contexts. Practical implications: Based on their market strategies, companies might either target customers with specific lifestyles and symbolic-hedonic motivations, focusing on incremental innovations and marketing centered on ‘customer intimacy’, or emphasize policies based on low prices and widespread distribution, focusing on organizational and productive efficiency and economies of scale.     Cost-Push and Conflict Inflation: A Discussion of the Italian Case

    This study contributes to the ongoing discussion surrounding the recent surge in inflation. It presents an analytical framework and empirically examines inflation trends in Italy. The primary aim is to identify the underlying causes, distributive repercussions, and mechanisms through which inflation is propagated. We adopt a cost-push and distributive conflict perspective on current inflation. Within this perspective, some contributions argue for profit-driven inflation, while others dispute this interpretation, emphasizing that increases in the profit share, amid rising import costs do not necessarily imply heightened overall profitability. To clarify these issues, the paper puts forth an analytical framework that shows how escalating import costs can affect profit shares and set in motion a period of inflation propagation, even in the absence of a wage-price spiral. Turning attention to the Italian context, the study utilizes descriptive statistics, sectoral data, and simple simulations to gain insights into the drivers of inflation and its distributive consequences. Additionally, a local projections analysis is deployed to uncover the nature and timing of the propagation process. The paper concludes with some policy implications based on the findings

    Early diagnosis, disease stage and prognosis in wild-type transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy: The DIAMOND study

    Aims: Disease staging and prognostic scoring in wild-type transthyretin-related cardiac amyloidosis (ATTRwt-CA) can be captured by two systems (NAC and Columbia scores). However, uncertainty remains as epidemiology of the disease is evolving rapidly. We evaluated features associated with staging systems across ATTRwt-CA patients from different diagnostic pathways, and their association with prognosis. Methods: We performed an analysis on DIAMOND patients with available data to evaluate NAC and Columbia score. DIAMOND was a retrospective study from 17 Italian referral centres for CA, enrolling 1281 patients diagnosed between 2016 and 2021, and aimed at describing characteristics of pathways leading to ATTRwt-CA diagnosis. Of the original cohort, 811 patients were included in this analysis. Each patient had NAC and Columbia score calculated. Patients were grouped according to NAC and Columbia scoring classes. We described characteristics of patients according to staging classes and diagnostic pathways at diagnosis. Prevalence of early diagnoses, defined as NAC Ia, NYHA class I, no use of diuretics, no history of heart failure (HF) hospitalizations nor of atrial fibrillation prior to diagnosis, was investigated. Finally, prognostic variables were tested alone and grouped as NAC or Columbia scores in Cox univariate and multivariate regression analyses. Prognosis was investigated as all-cause mortality, in the whole population and dividing patients in HF versus other diagnostic pathways. Results: Only 1% of the study population had an early ATTRwt-CA diagnosis. Distribution of prognostic variables and of NAC and Columbia classes was heterogeneous across diagnostic pathways. The prevalence of NAC III and Columbia III was higher in the HF diagnostic pathway, but all NAC and Columbia classes were present in all pathways. Both NAC and Columbia scores were associated with all-cause mortality at univariate Cox regression analysis in the whole population, in patients from the HF diagnostic pathway and in those from other pathways. At multivariate analysis, Columbia score remained significantly associated with the outcome, together with age at diagnosis, left ventricular ejection fraction and maximal wall thickness. Conclusions: In this contemporary nationwide cohort, an ATTRwt-CA early diagnosis was very rare. Disease staging with NAC and Columbia scoring systems determined classes of patients with heterogeneous features. Both scores were significantly associated with mortality, but other variables also had prognostic significance

    Neurogenic Inflammation in Allergic Contact Dermatitis

    : Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a skin condition characterized by inflammation resulting from hypersensitivity upon contact with certain allergens. Although ACD is characterized by an immune-mediated pathomechanism, the involvement of the nervous system in this condition has increasingly been considered, particularly in the amplification and persistence of inflammation. This paper aims to present a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms involved in neurogenic inflammation in ACD, focusing on the role of sensory neurons, the release of neuropeptides, their interaction with immune cells, and the potential therapeutic implications related to neurogenic pathways, diversified by age and gender. Innovative therapies for ACD, including topical formulations, may target the mass-bound X2 G-protein-coupled receptor (MRGPRX2) and endocannabinoid systems

    Hydraulic and Hydrologic Invariance: Effectiveness of Green Roofs and Permeable Pavements

    In this paper, the capability of selected sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) to accomplish hydraulic hydrological invariance (HHI) was analyzed. The HHI principle is achieved if both the peak flow and the volume runoff of the urbanized catchment remain equal after any increase of impervious surfaces. In particular, the hydraulic performance of green roofs and permeable pavements was evaluated by considering a standard case study frequently encountered in design practices. The numerical simulations were conducted using Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) software. The efficiency of SuDS was assessed by varying the effective impervious area (EIA) along with the main rainfall characteristics. The findings of this research show that the global performance of a SuDS-retrofitted catchment improves with the EIA reduction. Moreover, the rainfall characteristics, namely the rainfall duration and the return period, influence the hydrologic efficiency moderately. The experimental results confirm the positive impact of SuDS in mitigating the effect of the escalating urbanization on the existing urban drainage system. This effect was evaluated by quantifying the reduction of the choking occurrence in the sewer pipe and structures downstream the urban lot. However, the HHI principle is barely achievable with the standard implementation of SuDS, as also proved in a design graph to appraise how close SuDS are to HHI compliance
