Financial Democracy. Comparative political economy of banking
Elaborating a new approach to the comparative political economy of banking, Financial Democracy presents evidence of both the recent return to traditional bank management and the resurgence of alternative banks with social and public policy missions.
The book begins with a critique of contemporary approaches to banking, finance, and money in political economy, financial economics and, indeed, the major approaches to macroeconomics since 1945. In this analysis, traditional banks were expected to be replaced with market-based banking and new types of non-bank entities able to tap market efficiencies. Drawing on a unique combination of participatory democratic theory, comparative political economy, theories and concepts on banking and finance, and democratization studies in political science, the findings of this book are precisely the contrary. Historical-institutional methods and balance-sheet analysis reveal change in the opposite direction: a back to the future return to traditional strategies of deposit taking and loan making at banks. Since 2010, a variety of social reactions have been seen, in both advanced and emerging economies, against the commodification of credit, finance, and banking caused by the liberalization of domestic markets for credit and banking.

Computational Risk Assessment in Water Distribution Network
Water Distribution Networks (WDNs) are critical to urban infrastructure, ensuring the delivery of clean water but subject to ageing, environmental challenges, and operational pressures. This study employs a fuzzy logic-based approach using the Mamdani inference system to evaluate risks in Hashtgerd’s WDN. Key risks include contamination in water wells, structural vulnerabilities in tanks, and mechanical failures in pump stations. The findings reveal an overall risk level of 69.1%, with individual contributions of 66.18% from wells, 66.87% from pump stations, and 71.9% from tanks. Recommendations include stricter zoning, improved maintenance, advanced monitoring, and enhanced security

The essay examines the issue of “additional” contributions in public consortia, focusing on the legitimacy
of statutory clauses that impose on consortium members the obligation to cover losses. Drawing from a recent
judgment of the Supreme Court, which excluded the extension to public consortia of the prohibition on loss
coverage applicable to public companies (pursuant to Article 6, paragraph 19, of Decree-Law no. 78 of 2010), the
analysis explores the distinction between initial and subsequent contributions, with particular attention to the
problematic aspects related to the necessity of a statutory clause regulating their enforceability. Finally, the essay
investigates the relationship between public and consortium regulations, proposing an interpretation that extends
the principles of rational public expenditure to consortia, despite the Supreme Court’s decision, with significant
implications for the legitimacy of the clauses that bind consortium members to cover losses.Il saggio esamina il tema dei contributi consortili “ulteriori” nei consorzi pubblici, concentrandosi sulla
legittimità delle clausole statutarie che impongono ai consorziati l’obbligo di ripianare le perdite. Partendo da
una recente sentenza della Suprema Corte, che ha escluso l’estensione ai consorzi pubblici del divieto di
ripianamento delle perdite applicabile alle società pubbliche (dell’art. 6, comma 19, d.l. n. 78 del 2010), si
esplora il confine dei contributi iniziali e quelli successivi, con particolare riguardo ai profili problematici
relativi alla necessità di una clausola statutaria che ne regolamenti l’obbligatorietà. Il saggio, infine, indaga il
rapporto tra normativa pubblica e consortile, proponendo un’interpretazione che estenda ai consorzi, a
dispetto di quanto deciso dalla Cassazione, i principi di razionalità della spesa pubblica, con implicazioni
significative per la legittimità delle clausole che vincolano i consorziati al ripianamento delle perdite

Towards Automatic Computation of the SkullCode: A Novel Biometric Approach for Cranial Identification
One of the main activities of forensic anthropologists consists of identifying living or deceased individuals from the analysis of physiological characteristics. In this context, recent studies evaluated the possibility of using novel physiological traits. Furthermore, recent works aim at realizing decision support tools for forensic scientists based on artificial intelligence techniques. In our previous work, computer scientists and forensic anthropologists
collaborated to design a novel biometric recognition approach based on non-metric cranial traits, resulting in a 35-digit representation of these features (referred to as SkullCode). In this paper, we take a step towards the automated detection of SkullCode features. Specifically, we explore the possibility of classifying one of its traits by using deep neural networks. Our approach involves the extraction of two-dimensional slices from
the skull’s region of interest, followed by a deep neural network that classifies the presence or absence of the trait. To validate our method, in collaboration with Italian hospitals, we created a dataset of 952 annotated samples from 84 individuals. The best obtained accuracy is equal to 88.87%. This promising result
highlights the potential of our method for real-world applications and brings us closer to developing a fully automated identification system based on SkullCode features
Designing Multisensory Dining Environments to Moderate Taste and Mouthfeel Perception: From Sensory Laboratories to Multisensory Restaurants
Dining is more than just a necessity; it is a multisensory experience shaped by the complex
interplay between our senses and the environments in which we eat. The way we perceive taste,
aroma, and texture is not solely a property of the food itself, but is profoundly influenced by
the surrounding context, the atmosphere, space, and sensory cues that frame the eating and
drinking activity.
This thesis investigates the dynamic relationship between indoor environmental design,
multisensory integration, and the perception of healthy foods, with a particular focus on
enhancing taste and mouthfeel through carefully designed multisensory interventions.
Approaching this topic from the perspective of an interior architect and designer, this research
sits at the intersection of indoor environment design, sensory science, and gastronomy. It seeks
to explore how the physical environment can be intentionally crafted to elevate the sensory
qualities of low-sugar foods and beverages, thereby supporting healthier eating without
compromising pleasure or enjoyment.
Bridging design practice with empirical sensory research, this thesis offers an applied
framework for integrating multisensory design principles into real-world dining spaces. The
aim is to develop creative, evidence-based strategies for shaping eating environments that
encourage healthier dietary choices.
Grounded in a multisensory design approach, this research is built upon six carefully designed
experiments conducted across a range of contexts, from controlled sensory laboratories to
immersive, quasi restaurant settings. The studies were carried out in the Sens i-Lab at the
University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli (Italy), a laboratory in a non-Western context at the
University of Indonesia (Jakarta, Indonesia), and the quasi-laboratory multisensory restaurant
at Aistikattila®, Flavoria®, University of Turku (Finland). Each experiment examines a
different facet of how multisensory environmental cues can influence taste perception and
enhance the appeal of healthier foods and beverages, contributing to a growing body of
knowledge at the intersection of design, sensory science, and eating behaviour
