Functional Clustering for Survival Curves
This paper investigates the underexplored area of clustering multiple survival curves,
with a focus on the advantages of Functional Data Analysis for analyzing survival or
hazard functions to exploit their inherent continuous nature. We propose customized
functional methods, particularly leveraging Functional Principal Component Analysis,
and compare them with existing methods using two real datasets: the German Breast
Cancer Study (GBCS) and the Lung Cancer dataset. The results show that FDA-based
methods offer faster execution times and improve clustering quality overall, highlighting
the potential of FDA as a more natural and efficient approach for clustering survival
curves, making it a promising direction for future survival data analysis

Decomposition and decoupling analysis of carbon emissions of the EU tourism sector
: This study examines the evolution of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the tourism sector across the European Union (EU27) over the period 2008-2022, using an integrated approach based on the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) and Tapio decoupling analysis. The novelty of this research lies in the introduction of six tourism-specific indicators-Carbon Intensity (CI), Carbon Structure (CS), Average Revenue per Tourist (ART), Tourism Spread Ratio (TSR), Tourism Pressure Index (TPI), and Number of Hospitality Structures (NHS)-to decompose the drivers of CO2 emissions and assess their dynamic interaction with tourism growth. Empirical findings indicate that CI and ART were the primary contributors to emissions reductions accounting for -6.5 Mt. and - 3.9 Mt. respectively, consistent with previous evidence on structural and technological improvements. However, emissions were increasingly influenced by spatial concentration and infrastructure growth, as captured by NHS (+3.9 Mt) and TSR (+1.6 Mt). The Tapio analysis reveals heterogeneous decoupling trajectories among member states in the period 2008-2022, with strong decoupling observed in countries such as France, Portugal, and Sweden, while others experienced coupling or negative decoupling patterns. Overall, a recessive decoupling, index equal to 1.052, is estimated for EU in the period 2008-2022. These results underscore the need for integrated mitigation strategies that combine technological innovation, spatial planning, and sustainable infrastructure development. The study contributes to the energy-tourism policy interface by offering a replicable framework for monitoring decarbonization progress in tourism-intensive economies

This paper aims to focus on the proposition of modern visual models of female travellers and visitors passing through Italy in the mid-twentieth century in order to identify those characteristics of originality compared to the past but at the same time to trace in these new models echoes and reminiscences of those of past centuries, focusing in particular on four figures of female tourists protagonists of films, released one after the other and set in three different cities of the ‘Boot’ – Rome, Naples, Venice – confirming Italy’s vocation to become the backdrop for similar and paradigmatic stories: the sweet princess Anna of 'Roman Holiday' (William Wyler, 1953), the icy English wife Katherine of 'Journey to Italy' (Roberto Rossellini, 1954), the feisty and solitary American spinster Jane of 'Summertime' (David Lean, 1955), the bombastic Swedish diva Sylvia of 'La dolce vita' (Federico Fellini, 1960)
Synthesis and Combination Studies of Novel Dipeptide Nitriles with Curcumin for a Potent Synergistic Action Against Rhodesain, Cysteine Protease of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense
Background/Objectives: Rhodesain is a cysteine protease crucial for the life cycle of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, a parasite that causes the lethal form of human African trypanosomiasis. For these reasons, rhodesain is considered an important target for the drug discovery process of novel antitrypanosomal agents. Methods: In the present work, we carried out a combination study of two novel synthetic nitriles, Nitrile 1 and Nitrile 2, with curcumin, the golden multitarget nutraceutical obtained from Curcuma longa L., which we demonstrated to inhibit rhodesain in a non-competitive manner. We calculated the combination index (CI) in both the combination studies by using the Chou and Talalay method. Results: Comparing the CI values of the combinations Nitrile 1 + curcumin and Nitrile 2 + curcumin, we assessed that the inhibitory effect of the combination Nitrile 2 + curcumin against rhodesain was much more potent than that of the other combination. At the IC50 value, in the case of the combination Nitrile 1 + curcumin an additive effect occurred, while in the case of Nitrile 2 + curcumin, we observed a moderate synergism: at 99% of the effect, the synergism induced by the combination Nitrile 2 + curcumin was much stronger than the synergism promoted by the combination Nitrile 1 + curcumin (CI = 0.3843 vs 0.6622, respectively). Conclusions: The co-administration of dipeptide nitriles with curcumin enhances rhodesain inhibition through synergistic effects. Notably, Nitrile 2 + curcumin exhibits a stronger synergy at higher inhibition levels, indicating a greater therapeutic potential

Malignant histological transformation in surgically excised lipomas larger than 5 cm
Background: Lipomas are benign tumors commonly presenting as soft-tissue masses. Lipomas exceeding 5 cm in diameter
may pose a challenge regarding their potential malignancy.
Methods: We analyzed 73 consecutive patients undergoing surgical excision for lipomas greater than 5 cm. Clinical, demographic,
and histopathological data were reviewed. Tumor localization was categorized based on regions subject to high mechanical
friction (neck, axillae, knees, and legs) compared with abdominal or low-friction areas.
Results: Of the 73 cases initially diagnosed clinically as benign lipomas, histopathological analysis identified malignancy in
14 cases (19.2%), exclusively located in high-friction regions. Malignant cases predominantly comprised well-differentiated
liposarcomas (n = 10), dedifferentiated liposarcomas (n = 3), and one case of pleomorphic liposarcoma. No malignancies were
identified in abdominal (low-friction) locations.
Conclusions: The significant association between tumor location in regions of high mechanical friction and the incidence of
malignancy underscores the potential role of mechanical stress in malignant transformation
