Get PDFA Phenomenological Study on Preschool Educator Experience in Re-imagining Play and Play-Based Learning During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Get PDFThis phenomenological study explores how play-based preschool educators experienced and re-imagined play and play-based learning throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Semistructured interviews were conducted with six teachers and three administrators from three private Midwest play-based institutions. This study uncovers preschool educators’ experiences of engaging in play-based learning throughout the different phases of the pandemic and delves into the issues and challenges of online learning and the subsequent return to the classroom. Results show that despite pedagogical adjustments and limitations brought about by online learning modalities and pandemic related restrictions, the nature of play remains unchanged and continues to be vital to a child’s learning. The educators navigated the challenges they encountered by adhering to play-based philosophies and being responsive to the needs of the students. Educators focused on providing communication, fostering relationships, and providing students with opportunities to explore and utilize new environments as play spaces for learning. This study shows the need for critical supports for educators and students as they continue to experience negative effects of the pandemic upon their return to in-person learning. Implications of pandemic-related trauma emerging through behavioral issues in young learners indicate the need for further research into the long-term effects of the pandemic in children
The Joint Impact Of Parent Health Efficacy And Child Temperament On Child Health Outcomes
Get PDFChildren and adolescents in the United States have high rates of obesity due to several factors including low rates of physical exercise. Parents greatly impact children\u27s short and long-term health behaviors through multiple mechanisms. The role of parental factors such as health self-efficacy in interaction with child temperament is underexplored. This present study had two primary aims: 1) to examine the main effects of parent health efficacy on child physical activity and body mass index (BMI) percentile; 2) to explore the impact of parent health efficacy as a function of child temperament and the main effects of temperament on children\u27s physical activity and BMI percentile. In the present study, 123 mother and child pairs from the greater Chicago area completed self-report measures regarding physical activity, child BMI percentile, and personality along with tracking child’s physical activity with a fitness tracker. A series of regressions were conducted showing that: the interaction term of parental nutritional efficacy and child temperament of effortful control significantly predicted child physical activity (b = 2.029, p \u3c .049) and the interaction term of parental nutritional efficacy and child temperament of surgency significantly predicted child BMI percentile (b = 2.095, p \u3c .033). This study was conducted to better understand the impact parents’ self-efficacy of their own health behaviors on child’s health outcomes. This study also has the potential to identify subgroups of families who may benefit from culturally tailored interventions
Spirituality and the Development of an Organizational Compliance and Ethics Program
Get PDFMajor corporate scandals and heightened government enforcement of ethical lapses in the workplace continue to emphasize the importance of an effective compliance and ethics program. Compliance and ethics programs effectively became mandatory when the United States Federal Sentencing Commission amended the Federal Sentencing Guidelines for Organizations in 2004 to recognize the existence of an effective compliance and ethics program as a mitigating consideration in the sentencing of organizations convicted of criminal conduct. While legalistic codes, policies, and procedures have become the normative response to the Sentencing Guidelines, soul-less documents in and of themselves will not develop the “thoughtful behavior” upon which an effective compliance and ethics program depends, nor will they “foster a culture of honesty and accountability.” This article examines spirituality in the workplace and the benefits of incorporating spirituality into the development of compliance and ethics programs. It addresses the growing movement to integrate spirituality in the workplace and the results of studies reflecting the positive impact of spirituality on workers’ productivity and ethical decision making. Contrary to popular thought, I argue that the spiritual teachings of many religious traditions merit consideration in developing organizational compliance and ethics programs and turn to Christian spirituality as an example
