Relationships between Leading and Trailing Indicators at Construction Sites in Yanbu Industrial City, Saudi Arabia
Statement of Purpose: This study sought to assess the relationship between leading and lagging indicators in construction safety Management in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In particular, it sought to determine whether construction sites with higher leading indicators predicted fewer incidents/accidents.Rationale for Study: Construction safety management is a critical occupational health concern globally. Scholars have researched approaches to improve safety measures and performance in construction sites. However, there is little discourse assessing the relationship between the leading indicators and the occurrence of incidents and accidents in construction sites. General Methods: A quantitative analysis was used in this study. Data were collected from 33 Royal Commission construction site projects. Results: Findings from statistical analysis show that an increase in self-inspection was associated with an increase in stop work orders. The beneficial effects of leading indicators on lagging indicators were found for self-inspection and incidences plus near misses, for training and stop work orders, and for disciplinary actions and the rate of incidents. Conclusion: The presence of some leading indicators predicted fewer lagging indicators, particularly incidents and near misses. An increase in self-inspection was associated with an increase in stop-work orders. This relationship was a potential reaction to stop work orders. Therefore, these findings demonstrate that some leading indicators can predict the occurrence of lagging indicators, a phenomenon that can be used by the Royal Commission and other stakeholders in the construction industry to improve the overall safety performance in the sector
Understanding Curb Management and Targeted Incentive Policies to Increase Pooling: Examining On-Demand Transportation Services with a Focus on Shared Rides
This study aimed to contribute to the growing body of literature on on-demand transportation services, with a particular emphasis on sharing or pooling a ride when using these services, such as transportation network companies (TNCs) and microtransit. In 2022, an online survey (shared mobility survey) was administered in both English and Spanish to persons 18 years old or older and in selected cities across Texas—ranging from large urban areas to small cities and rural areas. The survey was designed to collect a rich set of data from more than 2,500 participants and offered a reasonably representative sample of adults in Texas. The study conducted an extensive examination of the data collected to better understand on-demand mobility service use and user characteristics, including attitudes, perceptions, and concerns in general as well as while sharing trips. Barriers to using these services and potential improvements that would make sharing or pooling a trip more appealing were investigated for both current and future on-demand services. The study produced intriguing new findings that contributed to the literature, as well as findings that supported and occasionally deviated from the current literature

Exploring Relationships of Political Affiliation and Interest in the News
What gets people to read the news? We explored whether political affiliation predicts the kind of news headlines that captures people’s interest. We showed participants multiple different headlines about current topics. These headlines were designed to be neutral in tone. For each headline, we measured their interest in and likelihood to read the article. We also measured how realistic they thought that the headline was, and whether they thought the article would be fact-based. At the end of the study, we also asked for their political outlook and how often they read news articles. A correlation analysis examined whether political outlook or tendency to read the news can predict the topics deemed interesting. Many headlines tended to be more popular among liberals, with almost no headlines being more popular among conservatives. Few relationships were observed between headlines and tendency to watch the news. We summarize the patterns we observed

Engineering Emotion Sustainably: Affective Gendered Organizing of Engineering Identities and Third Space
The questions of why there are so few women in engineering and how to change engineering cultures to be more inclusive have garnered much social scientific research and considerable funding. Despite numerous findings and interventions, no studies to our knowledge have analyzed how difference is constituted discursively, materially, and affectively in ways that are deeply embedded in engineering occupational and societal cultures. This study takes an affective gendered organizing approach to analyze how affect is constituted through emotions/talk, interactions, and materialities. Using constructivist grounded theory, we explored our interview data of 69 engineers (45 women and 24 men) to find three themes. The first describes women’s sensate experiences that underlie their expressions of (un)belongingness and (in)visibility. The second depicts men’s emotional labor to voice inclusion while enacting exclusion. The third pulls these feelings forward as the impetus for women’s constitution of feminist third spaces/places that operate as sites of collective emotional labor and resilience. Throughout we display the contradictory and essential embodiment of affect within individuals’ identities and as a sensemaking force that continues to constitute organizing systems of inequity. Taking an affective gendered organizing approach enables researchers and practitioners to respond more fully to the question of why inclusion is so difficult to achieve and to develop sustainable interventions for women’s career success in STEM
