    Why Austen, not Burney? Tracing the Mechanisms of Reputation and Legacy

    During the 200th anniversary of Austen’s death in 2017, the narrative of Austen’s rise to fame and her ongoing celebrity circulated throughout modern culture. But how did this happen? When Austen died in 1817, it was not obvious that Austen would become the archetypal British woman writer. Frances Burney was far more famous in her lifetime than Austen was in hers, and Burney’s novels (particularly Evelina and Cecilia) achieved as much, if not more, critical acclaim than Austen’s works. By comparing the afterlives of Jane Austen and Frances Burney, the factors that shape legacy come into focus—and scholars can use some of these factors to shape the legacy of British women writers today

China produces and consumes more energy than any other country in the world and has done so since 2006 and 2009 respectively.     Computer languages are the rules for writing computer programs. Just as we need languages such as English to communicate ideas and information with each other, we need computer languages to tell computers what to do. Computer languages are popularly called programming languages. The important difference between human languages and computer languages originates from the human ability to handle ambiguity and fill context. For example, in most contexts people would understand the phrase “let’s meet tomorrow.” But computers would not be able to figure out who is meeting, the place of the meeting, the time of the meeting, any prior preparation for the meeting, etc. Therefore, computer languages use specific syntax and grammar to precisely communicate with machines to avoid miscommunication. Once you develop some familiarity with computer languages and comfort with giving precise instructions in computer languages to get the job done, you can create increasingly complex computer applications that make life easier. Computer applications are a set of instructions written in a programming language. Computers read these instructions and perform the corresponding set of actions

    Live Audiovisual Remote Assistance System (LARAS) for Person with Visual Impairments

    According to The World Report on Vision by World Health Organization (WHO) [1], there are more than 2.2 billion people who have near or distant vision Impairments, out of which 36 million people are classified as entirely blind. This report also emphasizes the importance of social and communal support in enabling individuals with vision impairments to integrate into society and reach their full potential. While performing daily activities and navigating the environment, people with visual impairments (PVIs) often require direct or synchronous assistance [2]. Consequently, there is a growing need for automated solutions to assist in this regard. However, existing automated solutions can provide limited assistance with limited reliability [3]. Although assistants and caregivers can help PVIs when they have the time and they are able to be physically present onsite, other assistants may have the time to help, but no means to be physically present onsite to help (such as a friend with disabilities or an elderly family member who may not be physically able to help onsite). In this context, remote help can be utilized to provide PVIs with the help they need from persons who want to help but can’t be physically there in person. In this paper, our team designed a wearable hat equipped with a camera system to facilitate remote audiovisual communication between a visually impaired user and a remote assistant. The hat features three 120-degree cameras positioned around its rim and houses electrical components discreetly within its structure. A mobile application installed on both the user\u27s and the assistant\u27s smartphones provides two-way audio communication. The user with visual impairments can request assistance from a pool of registered assistants who can control the camera feed on the user’s hat and provide live guidance. This hat-based camera system enables real-time assistance for the visually impaired to perform daily activities such as job-related tasks, shopping tasks, meal preparation tasks, street navigation tasks, and other tasks. A hat-based design and remote assistance allow for a flexible and comprehensive solution to meet the needs of individuals with visual impairments and provides assistants the capability of remotely helping PVIs

    User-generated content, satisfaction, and WOM in the context of cultural/heritage site

    Research remains scant and ambiguous despite the need to understand better user-generated content (UGC) and its relationship with behavioral outcomes. In this regard, the influence of UGC on two types of visitors\u27 word of mouth (WOM) was examined. In addition, satisfaction as a mediator was tested to gain more insight into the UGC and WOM relationships. Using a sample of 260 visitors (tourists & excursionists) who visited the historical site in China, SmartPLS was used to evaluate the study model and hypotheses. Findings demonstrate that UGC directly and positively affects two types of WOM. The results also show the full mediating of satisfaction impact on the UGC and WOM relationship. Significant theoretical and managerial implications flow from our findings

    Who is the human resources manager? Metaphorical perceptions of human resources managers towards their profession

    The purpose of this study is to determine the perceptions of HR managers about the concept of HR Manager. The participants of this study consisted of 53 HR managers working in tourism industry enterprises operating in Antalya in 2023. This study was designed as phenomenology research in a qualitative research approach. The expression like was used to determine the relationship between the source and the subject of the metaphor. In order to determine the basis of the meaning intended to be expressed with metaphors the expression “because” was used. Content analysis method and word query were used in the analysis of the data obtained within the scope of the study. The NVIVO12 program was used for the analysis. Frequency analysis was used to determine the most repeated words. After the analysis, word diagrams of the most repeated words were obtained. In total, 36 metaphors were developed in the study. The metaphors obtained were collected in 9 categories. Metaphors developed by human resouces managers for their own professions are mostly mother, mediator, building foundation, bridge, psychologist, scales, family, father, chameleon, superhero and volcano

    Detection of Internal Voids of Additively Manufactured Parts with Structual Health Monitoring Methods

    It is possible to create voids inside polymer parts built by additive manufacturing methods. In this study, the feasibility of using structural health monitoring (SHM) methods was evaluated for identification of the voids in polymer parts. The Surface Response to Excitation (SuRE) method was used to collect the experimental data. Ten Polylactic Acid (PLA) bars of identical external geometries were manufactured using Fused deposition modeling (FDM) type 3D printing. Four bars were solid without any voids inside of them. Two bar groups were manufactured with the same void lengths of 1 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm at the center. Piezoelectric elements were attached to the opposite ends of all bars. One piezoelectric element was excited with 20 pulses. Each pulse had different widths. The monitored signal at the other piezoelectric element was acquired by using a digital oscilloscope. Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) of the signals was calculated. A Levenberg Marquette type neural network was trained with the data of the four bars. These bars were the one without any void and three others each with one of three void lengths. The inputs of the neural network were 10 averages of different frequency ranges at the calculated spectrums with the FFT. The neural network had one output. The output was 0 for no void and 1 if the bar had a void. Trained neural network inspected six other cases which were not used during the training. The neural network correctly classified more than 90% of the cases. Study indicated that SuRE method with pulse excitation and neural network-based classification is capable of identifying internal voids
