    En capítulos anteriores, hemos hablado sobre diferentes tipos de computadoras y sus componentes principales. Ahora estamos listos para explicar cómo se utilizan estos dispositivos. Aunque las computadoras se crearon para realizar cálculos complejos, como el ángulo correcto donde posicionar un arma para alcanzar un objetivo específico y la trayectoria adecuada para regresar a la Tierra desde la luna de manera segura, la mayoría de los usuarios no las emplean en cuestiones tan complicadas.     Imagine a Russian Colonel receiving an order from Moscow to deploy a tactical nuclear weapon (TNW) on the Ukrainian frontline. His next order – “Nuke ‘em” – rapidly changes the battlespace and in fact, the world. Since the inception of nuclear weapons in 1945, the threat of nuclear war has loomed over the globe. J. R. Oppenheimer, after the first successful test of an atomic bomb, recalled the Hindi scripture Bhagavad Gita: Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds. The power of nuclear weapons, along with the possibility of their use has only escalated since then. Starting in 1947, the threat of nuclear annihilation has been measured in part by the renowned “Doomsday Clock.” Today, the clock reads the closest to global catastrophe than at any other time in its history. As the war in Ukraine drags on, and the frontlines stagnate, global decision makers fear that President Vladimir Putin’s Russia may look to turn the tide or gain a domestic win by making good on his threats to use nuclear weapons.     Granular Material Extruder for Autonomous Asphalt Layer

    Road paving is a resource-intensive process that is crucial to the world of ground transportation. Autonomous paving solutions are more desirable in comparison to traditional methods when considering the health and well-being of workers, overall project expenses, and quality of the final product. A quarter-scale granular material laying mechanism has been prototyped and integrated into an autonomous platform that facilitates the road paving process. The mechanism designed to compact and extrude granular material performs well with materials that behave similarly to asphalt when in a heated state. Essential prototyping components were limited to additively manufactured plastic and asphalt-like materials to compensate for thermal and other physical properties. Future developments of this system should improve the scale of paving operations to that of modern paving machinery, utilizing the proposed compaction model

    POMDP Library Optimizing Over Exploration and Exploitation in Robotic Localization, Mapping, and Planning

    Localization, mapping, and planning are critical in autonomous robots operating in uncertain environments and in continuous and discrete domains. High-quality probabilistic models for a complex robot depend heavily on details from its environment, involving multiple parameters. However, there is a lack of accurate probabilistic models for existing robots that can handle reasonably the challenges posed by real applications. For most robots, actions are highly non-deterministic. Furthermore, there is a lack of general software packages applicable to new scenarios. Specifically, we propose a POMDP library for optimal planning and localization given new available models, and dedicated to optimize over exploration and exploitation tradeoffs

    Exploring the Relationship between Quantitative Reasoning Skills and News Habits

    Because people are constantly confronted with numbers and mathematical concepts in the news, we have embarked on a project to create journalism that can support news users’ number skills. But doing so requires understanding (1) journalists’ ability to reason with numbers, (2) other adults’ ability to do so, and (3) the attributes and affordances of news. In this paper, we focus on the relationship between adults’ news habits and their quantitative reasoning skills. We collected data from a sample of 1,200 US adults, testing their ability to interpret statistical results and asking them to report their news habits. The assessment we developed differentiated the skills of adults in our sample and conformed to the theoretical and statistical assumption that such skills are normally distributed in the population overall. We also found that respondents could be clustered into six distinct groups on the basis of news repertoires (overall patterns of usage, including frequency of news use overall and choice of news outlets). As often assumed in the literature on quantitative reasoning, these news repertoires predicted quantitative reasoning skills better than the amount of quantification in the outlets, but they still predicted only a small fraction of the variance. These results may suggest that news habits may play a smaller or less direct role in quantitative reasoning than has previously been assumed. We speculate that the presence (or absence) of quantification in everyday activities – namely work and hobbies – may be a better predictor of adults’ quantitative reasoning, as may additional dimensions of news habits and affective responses to numbers

    The Influence of COVID-19 on Tobacco Racial Health Disparities: Testing the Differential Effects of COVID-19 on Smoking Motivation Variables across Black and White Smokers

    The COVID-19 pandemic has illuminated persistent racial differences in access and quality of healthcare resources that result in disproportionately poor health outcomes for Black and African Americans, relative to Whites. Given COVID-19’s influence on racial health disparities broadly, examination is warranted on whether the pandemic has more specificallyinfluenced smoking motivation and, subsequently, tobacco-related health disparities. The goal of this study was to test whether COVID-19 related video content differentially primed smoking motivation (cravings, cessation self-efficacy, and motivation to quit) among Black and White smokers. I used an online research platform to host an experiment with a 2x3 between-subjects factorial design (Race vs. Affective Health Threat Prime). Race included Black or White and Health Threat Prime videos included COVID-19 plus explicit health disparities, COVID-19 alone, or Foodborne Illness as a control. Black (n = 501) and White (n = 511) participants were randomly assigned to one of six groups. Results showed no main effects of Health Threat Prime on cravings or cessation self-efficacy and no interaction effects on any smoking motivation variable. However, there were main effects of Race on all smoking motivation variables. Blacks, relative to Whites, had lower cravings and higher cessation self-efficacy and motivation to quit smoking. Income was a significant moderator of the relationship between health threat prime and motivation to quit smoking. For Whites with higher income, there were no differences in motivation across conditions, but there was variability for Blacks with higher income. The most variability was among participants with lower income, with Blacks showing higher motivation than Whites overall. Findings suggest that either the health threat primes were not robust enough to elucidate affect associated with the pandemic or that COVID-19 has not had a robust influence on smoking motivation across Black and White smokers

    Variability of Air Sampling Results Using Air-O-Cell Cassettes

    No current federal or state standards for mold exposure exist, partly due to the lack of accurate methods for assessing fungal exposure. Exposure to airborne fungal spores can result in several symptoms such as allergic rhinitis, coughing, and fatigue. Non-industrial occupational settings are common and fungal exposures may occur in these environments. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the meaningfulness of fungal spore trap results from samples collected in both a corporate office and a university classroom. Air-O-Cell cassettes with a Zefon Bio-Pump were used to collect one outdoor and three indoor samples at each location on three separate days. The indoor samples were collected consecutively. All samples were submitted to an American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA)-accredited laboratory for analyses, and total spore counts were compared across locations, sampling dates, and sampling times. Most numerous and most common genera for each location were also compared. The results of this study indicate that spore trap sampling using Air-O-Cell cassettes do not produce highly variable results; rather, results were fairly consistent across locations, dates, times, and most common genera. This is contrary to the literature, which indicates spore trap sampling produces highly variable results. Only one sampling date was significantly different from the others. Future studies that employ other fungal air sampling methods, such as viable air sampling, are recommended to allow for further comparisons and determination of the influence of longer sampling times and lower flow rates

    Fabric-Based Organic Electrochemical Transistor Towards Wearable pH Sensing Electronics

    Wearable electronics interest has attracted the attention of a few sectors because of their applicability in different areas like healthcare, military, and our daily basis. Still building circuits on fabrics to make these wearable electronics is challenging. As transistors are the building blocks of electronic circuits and most of the biosensors, recently, fiber-shaped electrochemical transistors have been studied extensively for a lot of applications including bioelectronics. Fiber-based devices are getting popular in different applications due to their low fabrication cost, lightweight, and flexibility without losing their properties. Additionally, they are potentially suitable for making sensors on garments. In this work, we have studied various types of coating processes of PEDOT:PSS conducting polymer into different fabric types. After the coating, the conductive threads have been used to make organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). Different studies before have shown the advantages of using dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA) solution in PEDOT:PSS to improve conductivity. In this work, threads were tested with and without DBSA to make OECTs and the effects of conductivity change on these transistors performance have been studied. The results show the performance improvement in the treated thread with an acid. The transistor design is considered in the development for its application as a wearable pH sensor to monitor perspiration in the future wearable medical point-of-care systems. In this work, we investigated the effect of thread materials on the performance of fiber-based OECTs made for wearable pH sensors. Three most commercially available threads were selected and tested in this research: 100% cotton, 25% cotton-75% polyester, and 32% cotton-68% polyester threads. Threads were coated with PEDOT:PSS polymer to use as the channel between the drain and source contacts. Then a silver-coated thread was used as the gate and a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel electrolyte was used between the two threads. Devices were tested by applying different voltages to the transistor terminals and monitoring the current through the PEDOT:PSS channel. The best transistor was obtained with 25%cotton-75% polyester. The results obtained from the experiment show a promising approach toward wearable sensors. Finally, we end up with the analysis of the transistor behavior when exposed to solutions of different pHs. Results showed a change in drain current after adding different solutions with different pH levels. The analysis revealed the effect of the pH on the PEDOT:PSS coating used as a semiconductor in the transistor that was made leading to results encouraging for the application of a new flexible bioelectronic device
