    The Effects of a Multicomponent Informational Text Reading Intervention on Comprehension: A Multiple Baseline Study

    In this dissertation, I present the findings from the implementation of aninformational text reading comprehension intervention. Using a single-case multiple baselines across participants’ experimental design, I examined results from three small heterogeneous groups of three to four students during the literacy block in a suburban fourth-grade classroom in a large school district in the southeastern United States. I designed a multi-component intervention with explicit instruction of informational text features to investigate the impacts on intermediate students’ oral retell and main idea statements. My research was guided by the following questions: (1) To what extent does participation in ITMI improve fourth-grade students’ oral retell scores? (2) To what extent does participation in ITMI improve fourth-grade students’ main idea statement scores? (3) To what extent do fourth-grade students who are participating in ITMI demonstrate changes in their reading comprehension as measured with pretest and posttest assessment? The results inform efforts to increase informational text comprehension for students in the intermediate grades

    A Multithreaded Implementation of Assist Functions to Control a Virtual Reality Model of a 6-DoF Robot Arm for Rehabilitation Applications

    This paper describes a multithreaded platform to implement a haptic interface to control a Virtual Reality (VR) model of a 6-DoF arm with applications towards rehabilitation robotics. The approach allows the defined threads to execute concurrently, resulting in increased utilization of the processor resources and higher instruction execution rates consistent with a realistic rendering of the touch sensation and smooth graphics transitions for the VR simulation. The haptic interface allows for physical rendering of the human–machine interactions through force feedback and velocity scaling enhancing the manipulation capabilities of persons with disabilities. Assist functions are modeled through the use of physical simulation of springs, spring with damping, and velocity scaling. The level of assistance is calculated by concurrent threads running the virtual model of the arm and the haptic loop at two different update rates

    Since its inception during the transatlantic slave trade, blackness within the collective unconscious of Western society has been sutured to negative stereotypes, images, and feelings. In modern discourse on race and racism, the unconscious manifestations of anti-black racism adopted from cultural impositions, the impact of enslavement and colonization on the psyche of the subjugated, and the importance of the mind in revolutionary efforts are all too often undertheorized. Through an Afropessimist framework, this thesis uncovers the origination of the black imago in Western society, how and why it is habitually recreated, and how black theorists, artists, political activists, and others have sought to challenge and destroy its authority. The research then shifts toward an analysis of the film Get Out to further demonstrate how stereotypical images, feelings, and attitudes regarding blackness formed during and as an excuse for slavery are cathartic for civil society and are challenged and even involuntarily reproduced by black creatives

    Exploring Time-Varying Extraneous Variables Effects in Single-Case Studies

    The effect of time-varying extraneous variables has been studied in other statistical analyses such as using Kaplan–Meier or Cox regression analysis in survival analyses. Nonetheless, the effect of modeling versus not modeling individual specific time varying extraneous variables has not been explored in multiple-baseline single case designs through Monte Carlo simulation studies. Therefore, in my dissertation, I used simulation methods to explore for a variety of conditions (varying in the number of participants, number of observations per participant, type of extraneous variable effect, size of the true intervention effect) the impact of extraneous variables on bias and standard error of treatment effect estimates, as well as confidence interval coverage. I examined the degree to which bias, standard error, and confidence interval coverage are affected by including measures of the extraneous variables in the multilevel model used to estimate the average treatment effect. Results showed that not modeling the extraneous variable effects led to substantial biases in the treatment effect estimates and 95% confidence intervals with coverage rates less than 50%. Modeling the extraneous variables led to unbiased effect estimates and confidence intervals for the treatment effect with 95% coverage rates. Several limitation and implications are discussed in this dissertation. The simulation conditions as well as the outcomes could be expanded in future research. Also, different extraneous variable distributions can be modeled and tested after reviewing more single case design literature to identify other types of extraneous variable effects. Finally, methods for identifying and tracking changes in extraneous variables need to be developed and studied, so that it is feasible to include these variables in the multilevel model used to estimate treatment effects in multiple-baseline studies

    How the Taiwanese podcast Bailingguo News framed the 2019 Hong Kong movement: A framing analysis of the anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill

    Nowadays, people can access different types of media to get information. Podcast is one of them and became more popular in recent years. In Hong Kong, the anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill movement took place in 2019. In this research, we are looking for the frames that Kylie and Ken as the hosts of the Taiwanese podcast - Bailingguo News used when they talked about the movement. The researcher applied framing theory to conduct this study, using textual analysis to analyze five episodes that mentioned the movement on Hong Kong from Bailingguo News. The researcher extracts the themes in the podcasters\u27 conversations and the frames they used on the movement, the protesters, the Chinese and Hong Kong governments, and the message they disseminated to the Taiwanese. The result showed that both the movement and protesters were framed positively. The Chinese and Hong Kong government were framed negatively. There were four main themes in the clips “democracy”, “solidarity and similarity”, “empathy” and “sadness”

    Using the Genetic Counseling Skills Checklist to Characterize Prenatal Genetic Counseling

    Genetic Counseling relies on communication skills to help patients understand and adapt to a genetic disease or risk. However, little is known about which skills are most commonly used or the extent to which genetic counseling sessions vary. A novel process measure titled the Genetic Counseling Skills Checklist (GCSC) was developed in a prior pilot study and includes 8 broad categories each consisting of 5-8 skills. This study is the first to apply the final GCSC to characterize 20 mock prenatal sessions conducted by 5 genetic counselors (GCs) for 2 prenatal indications using 3 trained actors as patients. Two experienced GCSC coders independently used the GCSC to document specific communication skills that were used during the recorded sessions and assigned each session an overall subjective rating on a scale from 1 (low quality) to 10 (high quality). Following each session, the 2 coders compared their completed checklists, calculated inter-rater reliability for each skills category, and discussed any areas of disagreement. Together, the coders created a consensus checklist for each session that served as the final agreed upon checklist. Consensus checklists were analyzed using descriptive statistics to unearth trends in skill usage. We found moderate to high inter-rater reliability (Kappa statistics ranging from 0.77 to 0.88) among the 8 categories and a significant positive correlation between average GC quality ratings and overall number of skills used (r=0.88). Our findings indicate that genetic counselors may be assessed more positively by observers if they employ a broader spectrum of communication skills. This study demonstrated that the GCSC can be a valuable and reliable tool to discover and analyze current trends in genetic counseling practice
