Development of mind and society

The Topology of`The Thing' in Naoto Fukasawa's Thoughts of Design
application/pdfNaoto Fukasawa is one of the best-known Japanese product designers working today. He says,'a design outline is exactly that: the outline of an actual object. This is also an outline of the surrounding space, the outline of a hole left in space by removing the object. Design consists in fmding that outline.' His philosophy and methodology of design have been deeply influenced by the concept of 'affordance' proposed by James Jerome Gibson. 'Affordance' is a key concept in ecological psychology, which refers to properties of the real world that provide us with potential 'meanings' or 'value' of a macro-order. This paper surveys the distinctive factors of Naoto Fukasawa's ideas on design, and the goal of this paper is to articulate the significance of his design ideas. Since Fukasawa encountered the concept of 'Affordance' and introduced it into his design theory, his creations have reflected its principles. Additionally, he has also enhanced the concept of 'affordance' and extended its possibilities as the methodology and ideas of design. This essay demonstrates that these methodological and ideological possibilities lie in Fukasawa's unique perspective of 'the thing' as 'the material'. We also show that the topology of 'the thing' (as 'the material') in his thoughts of design has the potentiality for thinking beyond modern paradigms.departmental bulletin pape
Synthesis and characterization of mesoporous TiO2 -Research works accomplished by using Electron Microscope System : XXI(1)-
application/pdfTi02 powders were fabricated via Silicon Template Method using KIT-6 as a template. Study of these powders by X-RD and Raman spectroscopy indicated that they are anatase Ti02. Surface area measurement by BET method has shown that the powders have large surface area, suggesting that they are mesoporous. They were successfully used as photocatalyst for the decomposition of methylene blue. Mesoporous Ti02 with highest crystallinity was most effective as photocatalyst although the surface area was not the highest.departmental bulletin pape

C++ Templete Program to Solve the Differrential Algebaric Equations
application/pdfThe arithmetic operations and functions of Taylor series can be defined by C++ language easily. The functions represented by C++ language which consist of arithmetic operations, pre-defined functions and conditional statements can be expanded in Taylor series. It is shown that Taylor series as the solution of the following differential algebraic equation f(y,y',x) = 0 initial condition y(O) = ao, y'(O) = a1 can be calculated easily by the above Taylor series methods. The solutions can be expanded up to arbitrary order, so the calculation formula of arbitrary order can be used instead of Runge-Kutta formula. Taylor series can be used for the evaluations of the errors and the optimal step size within given error allowance easily. In addition, we can transform Taylor series into Pad? series, which give A-stable method for solving differential algebraic equation numerically. An template program for C++ language is developed for the above algorithm. We can solve the differential algebraic equations numerically and exactly by this program easily.departmental bulletin pape
Grain refinement behavior of magnesium alloy AZ31 under torsion extrusion -Research works accomplished by using Electron Microscope System : XXI(3)-
application/pdfMagnesium alloy AZ3 l was used to investigate the influence of temperature and speed ratio (= die rotation speed / extrusion speed) on the grain refinement behavior and crystal orientation in torsion extrusion using circular type dies with differemt outlet-hole diameters. For each die, the optimum temperature and the speed ratio required to obtain a uniform distribution of 卜2μmfine grains over the entire cross section of the specimen were clarified. The torsion-extruded specimen had a very different crystal orientation than that of the extruded specimen. At a temperature of 443 K, the torsion-extruded specimen tended to form a strong texture along the extrusion axis, especially in the center region of the cross section. In contrast, the conventional extrusion sample had many grains in the direction perpendicular to the extrusion axis. When the outlet-hole diameter was the largest, the torsion-extruded specimen exhibited a strong texture along the extrusion axis over a wide area of the cross section. In conclusion, both the grain size and the texture of the metals could be controlled over a wide range by changing the die-hole diameter and the speed ratio in torsion extrusion.departmental bulletin pape
Preparation of alumina passivation-films in p-Si for solar cells by catalytic chemical vapor deposition and its evaluation
application/pdfPassivation effects of AlOx films were investigated for p-type crystalline Si for solar calls. AlOx films were deposited by catalytic chemical vapor deposition (Cat-CVD) using tri-methyl aluminum (TMA) and molecular oxygen (02) mixture. Surface recombination velocities at the interface of AlOx/Si was measured to be below 10-6 crn/s for AlOx films deposited with 02'TMA gas flow-rate ratios of 15 to 35. Conduction electron states and ferromagnetism of Gd-doped EuO
application/pdfIn order to study the conduction electron statesa nd ferromagnetism of Gd-doped EuO theoretically, we applying the dynatnical coherent potential approximation (Dynamical CPA) to a simple model. The model is an extension of s-f model that has been studied for the conduction states of Eu chalcogenides, and ineludes not only the exchange interaction between a conduction electron and localized f spins but also the nonmagnetic local potential due to the random substitution of Eu2+ ion by Gd3+ ion in regular EuO lattice sites. The present results agree with the temperature Tc experimentally observed by Sutarto et. al [Phys. Rev. B 80 (2009) 085308], but do not explain the temperature dependence of magnetization. Based on the density of states (DOS) calculated,w e also discussed the temperature dependence of the optical band edge ofGdxEu1_xO observed by Mastumoto et.al [J. Phys.: Condens.
