    application/pdfEthanol fuel cells with Pt-deposited carbon in cathode electrode were fabricated. The effect of carbon on the power density of the cells was studied to find which characteristic of carbon is the factor for obtaining good ethanol fuel cells. Carbon particle's size and shape did not affect the power density of the cells. However, the specific surface area and the electrical resistivity of the carbon particle were found to be the important factors.departmental bulletin pape

    Optimization of Resonance Frequency of Smart Helmholtz Resonator by Response Surface Method

    application/pdfIn this paper we carried out the simulation for controlling the resonance frequency of a Helmholtz resonator, which is used for the reduction of noise. The resonance frequency is designed to the desired value by PID control of the acoustical boundary condition of the Helmholtz resonator. The resonator like this is called Smart Helmholtz Resonator. At first the gains of PID controller is changed to several values and it is confrrmed that the resonance frequency is varied. In order to realize the desired resonance frequency the gains of PID controller are determined by the response surface method. By using the response surface method the determination of the optimal gains are possible for a lower frequency region quite accurately. It is shown that this method is effective for designing the resonance frequency of Smart Helmholtz Resonator.departmental bulletin pape

    Development of multi-functional reminder system for supporting report submission

    application/pdfIn this article, we discuss a prototyping of multi-functional reminder to support report submission. We think it is important that students activities on learning at schools are more improved. As the first project, to support to submit reports of courses at school, we developed and evaluated a report submission system on the web site as server program. Our goal is to improve the learning situation at schools, homes and everywhere by the way of e-leaming envirorunent also on mobile devices as smartphone and tablet PC. Therefore, as the next project, we propose and implement the prototype of a reminder as Android apps on the smartphones at the client sides. At the client side, Android apps show reminder information to notice. At the server side, personal reminder information are generated, planned and scheduled to the each student. We will evaluate the performance and the effect to the students on real course of our college, and then we will aim to show the results of usability of the system.departmental bulletin pape

    Evaluation of River Water Quality using Zoobenthos Sampled at the Sagami River Area

    application/pdfAnalysis of river water quality of the Koayu River and the Ogino River were performed with several chemical and biological methods. For the biological method, zoo benthos was collected at the each sampling point and obtained benthos were classified for calculation by both the average score per taxon (ASP1) method and water quality rank values. Chemical quantification of NH4+, NO2-, N03- and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were also performed by the conventional assay system of the PACK test. Obtained data showed concentration values of COD and N03- and average score numbers were well correlated with water rank values, this indicating chemical quantification with the PACK test system and biological zoo-benthos analysis were both useful and reliable methods to evaluate river water quality. Long-term evaluation of river water quality with both methodologies would shed light on presumable environmental quality changes around the Sagami River area.departmental bulletin pape

    Photoacoustic signal model of depletion layer spread beneath metal electrode in metal/semiconductor structure

    application/pdfIn order to clarify the detailed operation mechanism of a semiconductor device, it is necessary to know the information of the depletion layer in the depth direction. With the Schottky barrier of a metal/semiconductor (MIS) structure, the depletion layer spreads in the depth direction directly beneath an electrode. The theoretical analysis of the thermal diffusion equation was applied to the photoacoustic (PA) signal model of the depletion layer. As a result, the thermal conductivity ratio characteristic of the PA signal of the depletion layer which spreads in the depth direction directly beneath the metal electrode was obtained. The amplitude ratio of the PA signal increased with the increase in the ratio of thermal conductivity and decreased with the increase in the thickness of the depletion layer.     Observation for living substances with the transmission electron microscopy using a novel negative staining reagent--Research works accomplished by using Electron Microscope System: XXIII (1)--

    application/pdfAqueous uranyl acetate has been extensively used as a supeb staining reagent for transmission electron microscopy of biological materials. However, recent regulation of nuclear fuel material severely restricts its use. Since uranyl acetate is hazardous due to biological toxicity and remaining radioactivity, we examined gadolinium acetate (GdAc), a novel staining reagent for negative-staining electron microscopy in comparison with phosphotungstic acid (PTA). As a result, fine TEM images were observed when bacterial cells of Escherichia coli and Thermus thermophilus were respectively stained with I % PTA and 2.5 % GdAc. When GroEL/GroES complexes were stained, the high density sample on the grid was buried in the I % PTA, unless dilution of PTA or GroEUGroES complexes. On the other hand, 2.5 % GdAc stainning made it possible to observe high density sample clearly without dilution. We revealed that Gc!Ac reagents possess excellent capability for staining of bacterial cells (~μm) and GroEL/GroES complexes (~10 nm). GdAc can also be utilized as good negative-staining reagent to study supramolecular architecture ofbiologicall materials.departmental bulletin pape

Descartes irradiated a spherical glass filled with water with a sunbeam to observe the reflection and refraction of the light; the spherical glass was regarded as a drop of water. By comparing the course of the light and the result obtained by geometric consideration, Descartes concluded that a rainbow is the natural phenomena produced by the reflection and refraction of the light in a drop of water.departmental bulletin pape

    Development of Data Mining System using Background Information

    application/pdfThis paper proposes a system which datamines annotated time series leading by a discovery of feature patterns. Several studies propose extraction methods from time series data which is sequence of numerical values. They generally have a lot of important information in background, but it is not included in data. We point out that analysis methods without background information have limitations. We therefore develop two mechanisms that uses annotations which are compact expressions of back ground informaion. First mechanism runs in two stages. In the first stage, the system discovers important feature patterns. For this purpose, we propose a feature importance measure which is called FI. The second stage builds IF-THEN rules that predict future behaviors based on the annotations. For the understandability of the prediction rule, we use the IF-THEN rule style that represents X→ Y as the association rule. In order to extract the rule from time series data, we propose a new datamining method. The second mechanism is an automation of the annotation process. An automation function and/or decentralization function for this task is needed because human annotations require high costs. We thus also develop an automatic annotation method for financial time series data based on web news sites. We explain how these two mechanisms are harmonized in the entire process.departmental bulletin pape
