Investigation of optimum wire pitch distance in an electrostatic precipitator with multiple wire electrodes
application/pdfThe purpose of this study is to show an optimum wire pitch length in an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) with multiple wire electrodes at the same energy consumption. The ESP in this study has wires-and-plates configuration. The gap length between the wire electrode and the grounded plate electrode was 15 mm. The grounded plate electrode length was 150 mm, and the wire pitch distance was between 10 and 70 mm. The particle charge considering the spatial electric field and the ion density, and the time-dependent particle trajectory were simulated. In addition, the collection efficiency was calculated whereby the optimum wire pitch was investigated at the same energy consumption. In the experiment, the collection efficiency as a function of the wire pitch was measured, and compared to the simulated result. As a result, it was revealed that the optimum pitch distance between wires was 50 mm which was approximately 3.2 times the gap length between the wire electrode and the grounded plate electrode.departmental bulletin pape
Study of freshman assignment submission behavior as seen in the report resubmission method in academic report instructions
application/pdfIn this study, I consider how the report resubmission method is perceived by students and what kind of impact it has on their assignment submission behavior. In order to explore this concern, students’ learning records on college Learning Management System and the results of the questionnaire survey “Learning in Study Skills” are examined. As a result of this study, it was found that the report resubmission method was supported by most of the students and was effectively used in their learnings. In conclusion, it can be said that the resubmission method is useful not only for facilitating students’ knowledge and skill learning, but also for cultivating their sense of values as lifelong learners.departmental bulletin pape
Performance of Joint Learning Program between Different Graders for First Year Education of Science Course Students
application/pdfConsidering social contribution after graduation from universities, it is of critical importance for undergraduate students majoring in science not only to advance one’s speciality and technique, but also to attain sociality and communication skills during their school days. To exploit this point, we herein report the effectiveness of “joint learning between different graders” in a scientific experiment class, in which upper and lower graders were joined together, evaluated by questionnaire given to the students with lower grades. The upper graders participated in first graders’ chemical experiment class as facilitators, which gave rise to most of the first graders who answered that the joint learning program is favourable and wish to continuously take part in, thereby confirming the benefit that the joint learning is important for the first-year education of science course students. This result greatly persuaded us to further promote the joint learning program in experiment classes, and also to develop methodologies of the joint learning program best effective for classroom learning, hopefully paving the way for future achievements of the joint education method.departmental bulletin pape

Research on Teaching and Learning Methods in English On-demand Classes:―What we can assess from the TOEIC Sample Test and Questionnaire Results―
application/pdfThis study was conducted by four English teachers during the Covid-19 pandemic to improve on-demand English classes for new university students in Japan. The study was analyzed from two angles, teaching methods and students’ learning strategies, using a TOEIC sample test and a 13-item questionnaire, which were administered at the beginning and end of the semester. As a result, we found one teaching method with significant differences. Five students increased their TOEIC scores by 20 points out of 100, which indicated that the change in learning strategies was a major factor. In addition, the relationship between the results of 152 questionnaires and the TOEIC sample test revealed several effective learning strategies. Learning methods such as “Trying to analyze the reasons for one’s own mistakes” and “Focusing on the situation in which they are used when learning English words,” are stronger factors to improve grades. Further studies with larger samples and different sample levels are needed to confirm the result.departmental bulletin pape

Educational Attempts for Enhancing Logical Thinking Skills Required for Japanese Students Majoring in Science
application/pdfIn Japan, although it has been long since the issues about improving logical thinking skills in university students were raised, the current situation appears to be still lagging behind other countries. This ability is not only necessary when drafting experimental reports at universities, but also indispensable when the students grow up to start working in societies. In this report, we herein introduce educational attempts at Kanagawa Institute of Technology with the aim of improving logical thinking skills. In the series of lectures, a boundary between "what is interesting" and “what is not interesting” was intensively focused, a cautious observation of which could lead students to the awareness about how “interesting” and “logic” are closely related to each other. Interactive Learning between Students and Teachers through Wiki-based Web Plat-form
application/pdfRecent improvements and achievements in information technology have much raised ICT education, with facilitating essential communication between students and teachers via internet. Although active learning or interactive learning has gained much attention in pedagogy to date, few literatures have been reported referring to the practical examples for these learning methodologies. In an aim to further exploit interactive learning framework, we report herein that wiki-based web platform (abbreviated as “wiki” hereinafter) could offer substantial communication space where students and teachers can easily interact both in and out of school, realising ICT education-combined interactive learning. It is of note, however, that wiki platform should be regarded as the supplementals to students, neither as the main textbook nor the substitution of the lectures, mainly because most students appear to appreciate face-to-face learning environments rather than online-only education environments, possibly giving rise to further problem in

The effect of elastic stockings on blood circulation in the lower leg
application/pdfCompression using elastic stockings in the lower leg is known to be useful in treatment of edema, fatigue, and venous diseases affecting the lower extremities. To get insight into the mechanisms of the compression effects, the measurements were made for hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations in the gastrocnemius muscle during a series of posture change and gait (5 min.-supine position, 5 min.- standing, 5 min.-walking, 5 min.-standing, and 5 min.-spine position), using the infrared spectrometry. The measurements were conducted with or without elastic stockings for comparison. The hemoglobin concentrations (oxy-Hb, deoxy-Hb, and total-Hb) and tissue oxygen saturation in the gastrocnemius were found to be markedly changed during the posture change and walking. The elastic stockings yielded about 10% decrease in total-Hb concentration throughout the spine position, standing, and walking, indicating the increase of venous return in the lower leg.departmental bulletin pape
