Communicating urgency to prevent environmental damage: insights from a linguistic analysis of the WWF24 multilingual corpus
Contemporary environmental discourse focuses on effectively communicating ecological vulnerability to raise public awareness and encourage positive actions. Hence there is a need for studies to support accurate and adequate discourse production, both by humans and computers. Two main challenges need to be tackled. On the one hand, the language used to communicate about environment issues can be very complex for human and automatic analysis, there being few resources to train and test NLP tools. On the other hand, in the current international scenario, most texts are written in multiple languages or translated from a major to minor language, resulting in different meanings in different languages and cultural contexts. This paper presents a novel parallel corpus comprising the text of World Wide Fund (WWF) 2024 Annual Report in English and its translations into Italian and Brazilian Portuguese, and analyses their linguistic features
The effect of naming perpetrator characteristics on confidence ratings and on their relationship with identification accuracy
Language of the Swedish Manosphere with Swedish FrameNet
The manosphere is a loose group of online communities centralised around the themes of anti-feminism, misogyny, and hetero-masculinity. It has gained a reputation for violent extremism, particularly from members of the incel community. Sweden sees one of the highest volumes of online traffic to well-known incel forums in all of Europe. In spite of this, there is little information on manosphere/incel culture in Swedish. This paper uses posts from Flashback's manosphere subforum automatically annotated with Swedish FrameNet to analyse the language community in a Swedish context. To do so, a lexicon for the Swedish manosphere was created and terms of interest were identified in the Swedish discourse. Analysis of prominent semantic frames linked to these terms of interest presents a detailed look into the language of the Swedish manosphere

Who should have the right to vote, and should every individual have an equal vote?
This bachelor's thesis examines under what conditions restricting voting rights in a democracy is justified and whether every citizen should have an equal vote. The focus is on Estonia's 2025 political proposal to limit the voting rights of Russian citizens in local elections, citing security concerns and issues of loyalty. The aim of this thesis is to assess whether such a restriction aligns with the core values of democracy. The theoretical framework of the thesis is based on two philosophical approaches. First, Jason Brennan’s competence-based theory is discussed, which argues that only those who are sufficiently informed and act for the common good should vote. However, Brennan does not support legal restrictions, instead emphasizing the individual ethical responsibility of the voter. Second, Robert Dahl and Robert Goodin's "all affected interests" principle is analyzed, according to which voting rights should belong to all those who are directly affected by political decisions, regardless of citizenship. The analysis of the Estonian case shows that neither approach supports restricting voting rights solely based on citizenship. For Brennan, such an approach is too collectivist and insufficiently justified, while from Dahl and Goodin’s perspective, it undermines the legitimacy and representativeness of democracy. The thesis concludes that restricting voting rights may be justified in certain cases, but it requires strict ethical and practical justification. Mere political loyalty or security concerns are not sufficient grounds for limiting this right.Käesolev töö uuris küsimust, kellel peaks olema valimisõigus ja kas igal kodanikul peaks olema võrdne hääl. Eesmärgiks oli selgitada, millistel tingimustel on valimisõiguse piiramine demokraatias õigustatud, ning milliseid filosoofilisi argumente saab selliste piirangute toetuseks või vastu kasutada. Analüüs keskendus kahele mõjukale lähenemisele: Jason Brennani pädevuspõhisele teooriale ja Robert Dahli ning Robert Goodini „all affected interests“ printsiibile ning rakendas neid Eesti juhtumile, kus arutatakse Vene kodanike valimisõiguse piiramist kohalikel omavalitsuse valimistel.https://ester.ester.ee/record=b575308
Facilitating cinema's evolution: Estonia's key role in building AI-enhanced studios for premium creator-driven content
This research examines how Estonia, widely recognized as "the world's most advanced digital society" (Interesting Engineering, 2020) can leverage its technological infrastructure and digital governance framework to establish a creator-centric film ecosystem empowered by artificial intelligence integrationhttps://www.ester.ee/record=b575317
