    Mediating historical legacies at museums : the Reframing Picton exhibition at the National Museum Cardiff

    This thesis investigates how Amgueddfa Cymru critically addresses the contested legacy of Lieutenant Thomas Picton in the Reframing Picton exhibition at the National Museum Cardiff. Situated within the broader context of decolonisation and anti-racism practice, this research explores how curatorial strategies, co-curation, and educational programming challenge the perpetuation of Picton’s military achievement and British colonial glory in the museum space. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research examines how the symbolic authority of the portrait of Thomas Picton at the National Museum Cardiff is disrupted, how co-curation practice shapes the museum’s ability to mediate social tensions, and how historical discomfort is ethically navigated to support transformative learning. The reflexive thematic analysis reveals a complex interplay between institutional and collective memory in shaping historical consciousness and a national reckoning. As the dominant narrative of Picton is challenged, the museum became a contact zone where individuals engaged in affective and intellectual dialogue (Clifford, 1997; Schorch, 2015) to construct a more nuanced understanding of Picton’s colonial legacy and his role in perpetuating imperial violence in Trinidad. By foregrounding these dialogic encounters, this study contributes to the field of museum education and public history by demonstrating how museums can serve as safe spaces for negotiating historical discomfort and fostering reflective engagement.     Mapping Soundscapes of Warning: Experimental Interfaces for Public Sound Culture

    This short paper introduces Soundscapes of Warning, an experimental research application designed to support the comparative study of public warning signals as cultural and aesthetic artefacts. Developed through a collaboration between Linköping University and the C2DH at the University of Luxembourg, the platform enables users to explore how alarm sounds -– sirens and civil alert signals – vary across national and historical contexts. By combining geographic comparison with custom-designed 3D visualizations of alarm signals, the application offers a new model for investigating how warnings, urgency, and authority have been rendered sonically in different societies. Instead of approaching warning sounds as purely functional or technical signals, the platform emphasizes their role in shaping public space, perception, and memory. Designed as both a research tool and an interpretive interface, Soundscapes of Warning contributes to current efforts in the digital humanities to critically engage with sound as a mediated and historically contingent form

    Regarding Autonomy Aesthetics and Its Genealogy

    Summary available in English / Kokkuvõte inglise keelesIn the Western art music paradigm, music is understood and interpreted primarily as an autonomous musical work based on the concept of autonomy aesthetics. The ideas derived from autonomy aesthetics influence music culture in almost all its forms, from composing and performing to music criticism and historiography. Since both the emergence of philosophical aesthetics and broader changes in social conditions played an important role in the development of autonomy aesthetics at the end of the 18th century, this article focuses on examining these different contexts in the spirit of philosophical genealogy inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche and Michel Foucault. Starting from the present as a problem situation, I will first examine how autonomy aesthetics is expressed in today’s music culture. By offering a concise context and analysis of autonomy aesthetics and its genealogy, tracing its roots in the broader social, philosophical, and cultural-historical space, I will then show that the understanding of music based on autonomy aesthetics is often taken for granted as a historical construct, while it is actually just one possible narrative among others.     Efektiivne kaheosapoolne ML-DSA protokoll aktiivse turvalisusega

    ML-DSA is a NIST standard that defines a signature scheme: a set of algorithms for creating and verifying digital signatures. Digital signatures can be used, for example, to authenticate to websites online and to sign documents. ML-DSA signatures, unlike signatures that follow so-called classical formats, are quantum-resistant: it is believed that forging ML-DSA signatures is inviable even with a cryptographically relevant quantum computer (that is not yet known to exist). The security of a signing scheme relies on the secrecy of the used private key material. One way to increase the security of a signing scheme is to distribute the secret material across multiple devices, such that a sufficient number of them need to cooperate to create a signature. One scheme, that distributes the key across two devices, is implemented in SplitKey® technology, which is used in a popular signing solution Smart-ID®. Unfortunately, a two-party scheme that could create standards-compliant quantum-resistant signatures does not exist. This thesis presents a novel two-party signing scheme capable of creating ML-DSA-compliant signatures — Duolithium. This scheme is resistant against potential active attacks by either party, both during the key generation and signing processes. The thesis proposes some parts of Duolithium that were invented as a part of this thesis research and documents the remaining parts with reliance on prior research. Additionally, this thesis presents a complete, tested for functionality implementation of Duolithium in Python, together with the results of the benchmarks of network overhead and computational performance. The benchmark results suggest that Duolithium may be used to implement a new, quantum-resistant version of SplitKey that would be fully compatible with any signature verification component that supports ML-DSA.ML-DSA on NISTi standard, mis defineerib teatud signatuuriskeemi, s.t. algoritmid digitaalsignatuuride loomiseks ja kontrollimiseks. Digitaalsignatuure saab kasutada näiteks veebilehtedel autentimiseks ja dokumentide allkirjastamiseks. ML-DSA signatuurid, erinevalt signatuuridest, mis järgivad nn klassikalisi formaate, on kvantarvutikindlad: usutakse, et ML-DSA signatuuri võltsimine on praktikas võimatu isegi krüptograafiliselt olulise kvantarvuti abil (mida teadolevalt veel ei eksisteeri). Signatuuriskeemi turvalisus sõltub kasutatud privaatvõtme materjali salajasusest. Üks viis signatuuriskeemi turvalisemaks muuta on privaatvõtme jagamine mitme seadme vahel, nii et allkirja loomiseks peavad piisavalt paljud neist koostööd tegema. Üks skeem, mis jagab võtme kahe seadme vahel, on rakendatud SplitKey® tehnoloogias, mis on kasutusel populaarses autentimis- ja allkirjastamislahenduses Smart-ID®. Kahjuks ei eksisteeri kahe osapoolega skeemi, mis suudaks luua mõnele standardile vastavaid kvantarvutikindlaid allkirju. Käesolev töö kirjeldab Duolithiumi — kahe osapoolega signeerimisskeemi, mis suudab luua ML-DSA standardile vastavaid signatuure. See skeem on vastupidav võimalikele aktiivsetele rünnetele kummaltki osapoolelt, nii võtme genereerimise kui ka signeerimise protsesside ajal. Meie töö pakub välja Duolithiumi teatud alamprotokollide konstruktsioonid ning dokumenteerib ülejäänud osa skeemist tuginedes eelnevatele teadusuuringutele. Samuti esitab meie töö Duolithiumi täieliku realisatsiooni Pythonis, ühes funktsionaalsuse testide ning võrguliikluse ja arvutusliku jõudluse mõõtmistega. Mõõtmistulemused viitavad sellele, et Duolithium võib olla sobiv sellise kvantarvutikindla SplitKey versiooni loomiseks, mis oleks täielikult ühilduv kõigi ML-DSA-d toetavate signatuuriverifitseerimiskomponentidega

    Investigating the Neuronal Correlates of “Normal” Hallucinations Using Event-Related Potentials (ERPs)

    Visual hallucinations (VH) are often associated with psychiatric, neurological, and ophthalmological conditions but can also occur in healthy individuals, known as “normal” hallucinations (NH). This study investigated the neuronal correlates of NH using event-related potentials (ERPs) recorded during a dual-task paradigm. Fourteen participants completed a task requiring simultaneous judgments of facial orientation and the visibility of a central square, with critical trials designed to induce NH by presenting no stimulus while eliciting perceptual ratings. Behavioral results replicated previous findings, with NH reported in 62.5% of critical trials. Higher visibility ratings in NH correlated with task accuracy and response clarity, suggesting NH involves genuine perceptual experiences influenced by cognitive mechanisms. However, ERP analysis revealed significant limitations in data quality due to the insufficient number of critical trials, leading to high noise levels and low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), particularly in conditions with NH. While ERPs for the facial orientation task confirmed the recording setup’s reliability, no reliable ERPs were captured for NH due to insufficient statistical power. Future research should focus on optimizing experimental designs by increasing trial numbers, extending session durations, and refining preprocessing methodologies. It is advised to aim for at least 150 trials in future studies while maintaining a focus on improving electrode connectivity to enhance data quality and reliability

    Opinion Units: Concise and Contextualized Representations for Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis

    We introduce opinion units, a contribution to the field Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA) that extends aspect- sentiment pairs by including substantiating excerpts, derived through hybrid abstractive-extractive summarisation. The goal is to provide fine-grained information without sacrificing succinctness and abstraction. Evaluations on review datasets demonstrate that large language models (LLMs) can accurately extract opinion units through few-shot learning. The main types of errors are providing incomplete contexts for opinions and and mischaracterising objective statements as opinions. The method reduces the need for labelled data and allows the LLM to dynamically define aspect types. As a practical evaluation, we present a case study on similarity search across academic datasets and public review data. The results indicate that searches leveraging opinion units are more successful than those relying on traditional data-segmentation strategies, showing robustness across datasets and embeddings

    A Comparative Study of PEFT Methods for Python Code Generation

    Fine-tuning language models incurs high costs in training, inference and storage. Parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) methods have emerged as a more cost-effective alternative to full fine-tuning. However, limited work has compared different PEFT approaches for tasks like code generation. In this study, we examine the effect of various PEFT training methods on model performance in the task of Python code generation. We fine-tune four model families, ranging from 124M to 7B parameters, using three PEFT approaches alongside standard full fine-tuning. Our findings reveal that the effectiveness of each PEFT method varies with the model size and the corpus used
